FanFest - Feb 9

The email I got advertised the festivities as including "live music, food trucks, merchandise, giveaways, autographs, on-field access".  The last two were in smaller font than the others.  I find that very odd.  The only reason to go to a FanFest is to get autographs, selfies, etc.. with, you know, the baseball players.  Who cares about live music and food trucks?

This is the email, the fonts are almost identical sizes. I don't really understand your issue with it.

3:00-7:00 PM is dumb.

11:00-4:00 is perfectt

Not so early that you have to set an alarm clock or rush through breakfast and showers and not so late that it interferes with Saturday night dinner plans.

I agree with this.

Maybe they saw how poor the FanFest attendance was last year and decided to try something new. I think we can all agree that it wasn't the time of the event that led to poor attendance though.

If it is due to fireworks as SB mentioned, that makes sense. Though I don't think fireworks are necessary.

Every other team in the league does their FanFest event in the morning-afternoon hours like Miami used to do as far as I know. There's probably a reason every team does it that way.

I'm with him... the baseball things are less emphasized than the non baseball things. It's not about font size but I thought the same when seeing the email. The order that you read them in implies order of importance and that email makes it sound like a music festival that might have a few baseball players wandering around, especially with the images on the bottom showing the musical notes.

I saw all the items at the same time personally but I get what you are saying.

Maybe it again is "trying something new" because of the poor attendance last year. Maybe they are trying to put the focus on stuff that fans aren't used to seeing there in order to get some new visitors.

This along with the social area and SRO section could all be ways of trying to get some traditional "non-baseball" fans into the park since they don't have many actual baseball fans.

After I wrote it I realized the fireworks might have been added on after deciding to put it on so late so we can't know for sure if the fireworks are THE reason or were added on after the fact but it was worth a mention.

In general remember they're trying to make Marlins Park a weekend destination as a spot to be BEFORE going out on Saturday nights... this ends at 7, plenty of time to still do things afterwards. Maybe that's what they're aiming for here.

And if the complaint is about dinner time, they'll tell you that food will be available... not defending it just saying what they'll say.

If they deemphasize the "baseball" portion, they may lose out on the main demographic of FanFests - kids who want autographs.  There seems to be a tension in the marketing department between appealing to the typical baseball crowd (families with kids) and some idealized version of the Miami nightlife crowd.  I get that for games, but not a FanFest.

I think it boils down to them just trying new ideas because the old way wasn't producing good results. I doubt the change in time or "focus on items" will boost or decrease attendance at FF. It will likely be around the same as it was last year.

If they want FanFest to be a packed house, it is going to take an exciting group of players. I remember that group of Uggla, Ross and the rest bringing fans out to FF because they were a fun group of guys to not only watch play during the season, but also to interact with.

I agree with this. For FanFest they should appeal to the "die hard Marlins/baseball fans" and just have a few things for everyone else. This is not the event to cater to non-fans or it waters down the point of the event. Nobody is going to this event just for music, fireworks, and food trucks... those that are going, especially with the team coming off a 98 loss season, are going because they are actually Marlins and baseball fans. If they can bring along a couple of friends who aren't baseball fans and entertain them along the way that would be great but those non-fans should not be the target audience for FanFest.

Well, they better have ice cream this year.  Last year, took my three year old granddaughter, and I promised her ice cream and they weren't selling any.  How is that possible at a fan fest with a lot of kids.  She settled for french fries and running the bases with a high five from Billy.

Wow that is really poor planning on their part.

One more thing about FanFest... having Realmuto there would be really awkward and possibly distracting.

wasn't this the same felling last year when he requested to be traded ?

I wonder if he shows up. Players may be required to but not sure.

40 man roster players are all required unless there's a legit reason for an excuse and the only reason I've seen excused over the years is if the player isn't in the country yet because of visa issues, I remember that happened with someone a couple of years ago.

I guess but last year felt more like just rumors of a trade this year it almost feels like a trade is definitely happening so him smiling and looking like he'll be on the Marlins in 2019 would seem so fake.

The font is smaller, but only so they can fit them on a single line, not in an effort to de-emphasize them.

Speaking of Billy.....when do we see the “new” Billy?

Smaller but not significantly so.  And yes, exactly what I thought.

You can debate/argue whether the heirarchy of the lines is an indication of what they want to emphasize, though.

Cheap Jeter didn't wanna cough up extra cash to use a bigger font.

Ironically, in this case, a bigger font would be cheaper, since you're using LESS black ink ?
