December 19, 200322 yr Cabrera has a sophmore slump and choi does not hit....i heard this question last night when i was at the batting cages and man it really got me thinking ...what would we do....i mean we no longer have todd.h and j.enc by the way who are our back up outfielders this year...
December 19, 200322 yr enc was a back up???? funny, i always thought he started..............dont worry your sweet little self with "ifs" and "buts", anything can happen in a season, you never know who will produce and who wont
December 19, 200322 yr IF That happens we'll probably send him to the minors and/or trade for someone. But it probably won't.

We wouldn't pay him 4-5 million dollars to sit on the bench.

I guess then we're screwed. But what can you do? You can't waste $1 million on a Hollandsworth-esque player to come in and be an insurance policy OF. You gotta trust that Cabs is for real. That being said, we're not done dealing yet. They're going to sign some 4th and 5th OF's soon, and then once we've got them, our worst case is moving Conine to 1st instead of Choi, and starting a solid place-filler OF next to Pierre. Let's remember - this is a buyer's market this year. Certain guys are going to get paid serious cash, but on the whole, players are selling at bargain-basement prices. I think that we're going to be happy that the Marlins are waiting things out. There will be deals out there.
December 19, 200322 yr Abe Nunez will fill in admirably From your lips to (the baseball) God's ears... If you asked me in 2001 I really thought Abe would be Miguel Cabrera by now. Two or three seasons ago he looked like the real deal but his last two seasons have been pretty uneventful. Last season, which he missed the first half of, looked good on paper BUT when he came back he set the world on fire and then slumped for the last six weeks. His performance with the Fish in Sept 2002 was pathetic. I hope you're right Ramp, I really do. After following the Cannons and 'Topes pretty closely for the past three seasons, I have strong reservations whether his guy can ever be an everyday MLB player or even a decent bench guy.
December 19, 200322 yr I think Nunez will mainly be a bench guy if/when he makes it to the Majors. I can see him being used as a pinch runner/late inning defensive replacement in the outfield. When I saw him in AA, everytime it seemed like he was starting to put it together, there would be a slump, small injury, etc... I would like to see him succeed, but the "quick aging" really put an end to the "potential" talk.

Well...the same question was asked last season about H-Worth and Enc - what if THEY didnt produce? Well, we went out and found guys that would. I dont see any reason to doubt why Cabrera will produce - here, let me give you something to think about. Remember Cab's at bat in the World Series against Clemnns? It was his last game ever, and he just threw a pitch up at Cabby's head. He kept his cool, and hit the next pitch over the right-centerfield wall. A 20 year old getting the better of a sure-Hall of famer. Remember that when someone asks about Cabby's ability... Choi has only 252 career at bats. I cant say that enough. Relax, wait til spring training - this guy is going to impress a lot of people. Right now, we are a better team than last year - make no mistake.
December 19, 200322 yr Right now, we are a better team than last year - make no mistake. Better than the beginning of last year perhaps, but we still need additions to the BP, specifically a strong closer to be better than the WS lineup.
December 19, 200322 yr Author when i made this tread i didnt mean to sound negative just a little worried because the marlins are being a little slow on making moves to better the bullpen and bench help....i really hope you guys are right about Choi and hopefully M.Cab will be the stub were all hopeing he will be...also man there are some people in this forum that take stuff to personal, remember sites like this are made so people can state their opinion of course not everybody is going to agree with everyone but hey some people have to seriously chill out..
December 19, 200322 yr why do we have to think negative? If we ALL thought positive ALL the time, this would be a boring message board.

I guess we would not make the playoffs. I mean, yah if our players suck, we arent gonna do too well. Just like any team. We are expecting our players to equal and be better than last season. It's risks. I mean, what if we had signed Pudge, and he got injured, or sucked because he's getting old. Or what if Lowell (God forbid) has cancer problems, or broken hand problems. We can sit all day and think about possibilities as to why this team might fail. Hell, Beckett gets injured every year, what if he gets injured? Or what if Penny blows. Or if Pavano blows. Or if Chad Fox's season with us last year was just a fluke. Jimmeny Crickets!
December 19, 200322 yr why do we have to think negative? If we ALL thought positive ALL the time, this would be a boring message board. And we'd be short of Fish Fillet and Slaphands.
December 19, 200322 yr This also worrries me. I mean choi is questionable, cabs really slumped last year but maintained himself. J.P. will have another great year, then conine has to dominate like i know he can. Williams I dont like, I do like B.Banks though. A.Nunez I have never seen him play. And we lost hollansworth. THAT'S WHY I SAID A FEW DAYS AGO TO GO AFTER JAY PAYTON. OR what about John Vander Wall. And I think castro will do a good job as catcher but I think that we atleast should have given lopez an offer. also no vlad. WHAT'S GOING ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!! :banghead

What happens if the world stops spinning and the sun stops shining? If someone gets injured, or doesn't play up to par, you deal with it, and make mid-season adjustments....just as we did last year. That doesn't stop you from going into the season trying to be as competitive as possible given the budget constraints. Relax. All is well. We are going to do just fine next year. :thumbup
December 19, 200322 yr What happens if the world stops spinning and the sun stops shining? We would be really cold.
December 19, 200322 yr If Miguel Cabrera has a Sophmore slump I will shoot my foot. And if Choi bombs, I trust Banks.
December 19, 200322 yr What happens if the world stops spinning and the sun stops shining? i was told that if that were to happen you would go flying at a speed of 1000 mph or something like that
December 19, 200322 yr WHY NOT JAY PAYTON GUYS? BECAUSE OUTSIDE OF COORS HE COULDN'T HIT A HOMER ON A 70 MPH PITCH WITH A FUNGO BAT.
