September 6, 20205 yr Yup getting a look at these young guys is huge man. What a promising future rotation. So much filth.
September 6, 20205 yr I suspect some of y'all are sleeping on Ureña. He looked really impressive in Spring Training. And frankly, anyone who throws 96 with solid control and a good changeup can break out at any moment. For a no. 5 starter, that's a helluva lottery ticket.

Perfectly fine with him as a number five starter / spot starter. The main issue / stigma with him was when the team regarded him as an "ace" despite being ... not amazing. Those were dark days. Wei-Yin Chen, Odrisimar Despaigne, Dan Strailey, Trevor Richards -- RIP my friends.

I remember during those years the front office would talk about how much depth they had and they would rattle off those names plus others and looking back it just shows you how there's a huge difference between having depth and having actual quality in that depth.

Exactly. "Ah we got this guy and that guy ... and uhh ... that guy." Now, it's ... "We got Sixto and Rogers and Pablo and Sandy up here, and we got Neidert coming back, and we got Garrett and Meyer and Cabrera still waiting, and we also have Guzman and Holloway and Fitterer, and ..."

I think that's where prospect rankings can be a helpful calibration tool for fans. It's easy to get glossy eyed about Peter Mooney and Merandy Gonzalez when you're focused on your own system, but when FanGraphs, Baseball America, and Baseball Prospectus start talking up Sixto and Bleday, you know you've got a shot at something special.

You can never have enough pitching - but realistically, we'll have a log jam, and it's a great problem to have. We'll end up flipping a couple of those guys for future prospects. I know I'm getting a couple of years ahead of us, but it'll be nice to have that kind of potential at multiple positions.

Absolutely - for me, I've said, don't trade the extra starters away unless it's going to give us a long term impact bat - instead, use them in the bullpen.

I absolutely agree that they should be tried in the bullpen. Some pitchers just can't do it though. They have their routines, and the bullpen has too much uncertainty. We used to harass our pitchers in college because most of them are prima donnas - the have to run the day before, warm-up for 45 minutes, go running after the game, blah blah blah. If they can't keep their routine, it wrecks their world. Then they claim to be the best athletes on the team.
