USA Men's Baseball Loses to Japan in Round 2 Matchup of Olympics

Featured Replies

Some moron on twitter said that since Japan beat the US team, they should stop calling the domestic championship a “world” series.

Obviously that guy doesn’t know a thing about baseball cause he would know that was basically an A/AA team of nobodies and has beens. Even when it’s the WBC most of the really good players decide not to play to not get hurt. If you had a team with ALL of the American All stars they would dominate. There’s a reason washed up players go play in Japan/Mexico/Korea and not the other way around.

The biggest reason why baseball was dropped by the Olympics (besides the fact that Europe, where baseball is not very popular has an outsized influence on the IOC) is because MLB does not let athletes on 40 man rosters compete. The Japanese NPB allows their players to compete. Baseball is only back on the Olympic menu because it is in Japan this year. It will only be held in baseball loving countries like Japan, South Korea, etc. as long as MLB refuses to let the best players in the world compete.

But then what happens to the MLB season? It goes on pause during the Olympics?

That's what the NPB does. Honestly, I am fine with the current arrangement. Remember, the Olympic decision led to the WBC, which is a way more exciting baseball tournament anyway.
