I wonder if he took a discount, part of me really feels Sandy wants to be one of the leaders here and genuinely wanted to accept this deal. That doesn't mean he deserves to be paid less but there are always guys who are willing to give up a relatively small amount of money to be in the position they really want.

You always give up SOMETHING when you do deals like these as a pitcher.

You also gain the GUARANTEED money so to many a small sacrifice is worth the cost.

Most of us here know this but deals like this are the right way to spend money in the sense that you've now got your likely ace for five years for "just" $11M a year. It's spending but spending wisely to be able to save and allocate money elsewhere (in theory).

Of course, that's understood, but there's also guys who don't want extensions more than getting the biggest payday possible and don't budge from unrealistic demands. I get the feeling that Sandy really wanted the extension and the role this gives him.

It gives them cost certainty too regardless of how it's structured, rather than the "ballpark" question mark of arbitration.

 

If they were further smart, they'd front load it slightly to take advantage of the lack of payroll now, and help to sign some other bigger names on equivalent length deals.

 

Layer the contract to work with each other and even out the cost per year.

Often pitchers who come from families of lesser means will also jump on deals like these.

Reality is what reality is.

Pitchers that bet on themselves are those that are a. well off from a family side or from a personal side , i.e. other options or b. just looking to set records or c. have been pissed off from the organization and want out as soon as possible.

Sandy fits none of these criteria.  

Its a good/great deal and I'll be very happy for him if it gets finalized.  Kid has really worked his ass off to get to where he is.

Damn, that's f-ing great to hear. When's the last time the Marlins franchise made a move like this that we could feel so good about? The free agents they've signed have largely been middling or stopgaps. I don't remember the last person we gave a significant pre-FA extension to.

And, even if it's not a "discount", it wouldn't be a trainwreck, as he's been consistent/improving, so the team is safeguarding itself against him performing even better and being even more expensive.

Beyond that/more importantly, it shows other teams and FAs - not to mention our own players - that we do mean business and that we will extend players when warranted.
