Sanchez may never get to 4+ WAR land, but he'd still be a very valuable player under years of control. Ultimately, this is a good borderline great development and exactly what they needed to happen with Sanchez and CF. So why am I still mad? This then goes back to why did we all want a CF this offseason? It's because the team needs an upgrade and that was the most obvious spot short and longterm (I'm ignoring signing Correa/Bryant and doing multiple other moves). There are no other CF in the system (sorry Burdick, you're likely a corner guy), so - and this is assuming Sanchez defense holds - if Sanchez gets hurt, the team then has a nosedive in production. He's just as important as Stallings where the team is really screwed if they get hurt. It's important to NOT have that happen. That's what good teams do. They have incredible 2B/SS/3B depth with four starting caliber guys they can move around so not much changes if one gets hurt. They are set at 1B/DH/Corners with Lewin, Burdick, and Bleday in AAA, as well as maybe DLC performs as a high BABIP guy. A lot of hope there. You get to CF and there is nothing. Maybe Garcia in a pinch, and then your OF defense is really a mess. Considering Sanchez is likely a "below average" defensive CF if he can even do it.... this likely translates Sanchez to an "above average" corner OF (or at least better than CF). Let's talk about that. Maybe he's close to that high end 3.5+ WAR guy in LF. This is maybe a win we're talking about versus playing him in CF so let's put him in the best position for him to succeed. That would be VERY welcome to me. So we are back where we started this offseason - it would behoove them to get a true CF today, kick Sanchez to LF, and all of a sudden the team defense is pretty great across the board. Let's make Soler the permanent DH (huge), and they can parse out AB between him, Cooper, and Aguilar. Everyone can get off days to stay fresh as the depth is real. Further, then if this new hypothetical CF gets hurt.... Sanchez takes over(!) and you don't have a production bomb as you can shift around all your corner guys to make it work. That is frankly HUGE to have positional redundancy and don't have to act desperate. Especially a team with a low margin of error like the Marlins. So big picture, they still need a CF. And specifically, one who hits left handers well because the team obviously is going to struggle there. Someone like KK doesn't make sense here as he only can hit RHP a little. So who is out there? It's the same name. Ramon Laureano. 2021 vs LHP - .304/.380/.478 Career vs LHP - .283/.349/.465 Excellent defensively, and he also hits right handers so you can start him 120-140 games a year (he gets hurt, so building in extra off days is smart with him.... especially since we can now cautiously optimistically say Sanchez can play 40+ games in CF and not embarrass himself). He's cheap. Oakland is in a rebuild. He paces as a 4+ WA player per 600/PA for his career. Marlins have a farm 8-10 deep of very exciting guys. Assuming there are no long term PED issues (Marlins said in Miami Herald they think it was an accident), this guy is perfect. He's even from the DR which is a plus for Miami! They need about 5-7 good things to happen to succeed. Early results suggest three may be happening (Sanchez, Jazz, Luzardo breakouts), however one really bad one may also (Rogers). If we assume Rogers has course correction, and at least one of Soler2019, Garica-Statcast breakout, 5+ WAR bullpen when Floro, Meyer, and Cabrera show up, or fluke career year out of someone else (Aguilar 35 bombs, etc.) happen, all of a sudden they are in that range where they may actually get over 85 wins. Adding Laureano on top really helps that margin of error. What Sanchez is doing is great and I'm happy looking at the early returns, but really suggests EVEN MORE they need a CF ASAP. Going out and getting Laureano in May would be a fantastic plant your flag moment for the team and not waiting to July. Get that extra 1-2 wins before the allstar break with a guy controlled for years. Play to win. Restore trust. Act competently. Build depth. Anyways carry on. Also, for the love of god stop batting Jazz 9th. He is arguably the most important position player on the team. Bat him top 5 in the order minimum.
April 19, 20224 yr I love your posts but why the boycott? So far they're doing ok, I think they need more too but in theory we hope they prove us all wrong, why not go along for the ride while they're successful? At least wait for the ship to start sinking before jumping off.

If they don't give a shit about us, I'm not supporting a half-rate front office after being bludgeon'd for years. They need to contend after a 4 year rebuild - not go 85% of the way with a $75m payroll and 8-10 premium prospects. Naming rights? TV deal? Pandemic lowering? Owner beneficial CBA? They have money and resources and they are NOT using them. I can't imagine any team in baseball not going for it right now with their core, except the Marlins. AND with Sanchez/Jazz/Luzardo looking well in their SSS, it's even MORE infuriating as one of the better case scenarios is unfolding. But it's still not going to be enough. They need a superstar or 2 above average guys upgrades to get to the deadline. Laureano (4.7+ WAR over 600/PA) is a borderline superstar, so do that and all is forgiven. I hope the only reason it hasn't happened is the suspension. He is literally and figuratively perfect. We shall see.

I do agree they should still acquire a legit CF as well - the problem here is they signed both Soler and Garcia who they are obviously going to play as much as possible and by trading for another OF that seriously crowds the OF. I've said it before and I'll say it again, signing Garcia and Soler was stupid and the Garcia contract in particular will be our next Chen contract. They should have just grabbed their CF, signed Soler ( if they wanted someone) and used DLC as the 4th OF with Sanchez in right, (insert CF), and Soler in left. They even have Berti, Wendle, and BA to handle spot starts when needed. It was just idiotic getting both Soler and Garcia.

A lot more than CF... Garcia makes way less than Chen, plus not deferred so it won't linger forever. Bat is safer than arm. He'll be fine. He's good with a high defensive floor. I don't think Soler and Garcia are an obstacle to CF PA. There are plenty of PA to pick off the bone with the position versatility of the team. Do we care if some guys have 450-500 PA versus 600? Play some splits, keep guys healthy, and make up ground against other teams with DEPTH versus UPSIDE in single spots. A 1.5 WAR bench player is a win versus another team. It all counts in the end. Big picture, we're losing some AB from Rojas versus RHP, or Aguilar/Cooper/Wendle in general? No losses here. In a perfect world this is the position player core: Stallings, Upgraded backup catcher who hits lefties Aguilar, Cooper Jazz, Upgraded backup infielder who hits lefties Rojas, Wendle Anderson Sanchez Laureano(!!!) Garcia Soler I think we can all wait for a Berti/DLC upgrade for last guy on the bench, so go get Laureano and this team is NICE
