EVERY OTHER major sport's rules evolve over time.  Why?  becuase thats what they have to do in order to maintain fans.  Like it, hate it, its reality.

The banning of the shift while unfortunate really needed to happen.  (But they should just learn to hit the other way).  Weak argument.  The time it will take to condition hitters to do that makes it not practical.  That's 'reality'.  

The batting averages last year sealed the deal.  MLB had to do something in an effort to increase offense.

The bigger bases should see a return to the run game, the number of tosses over is done to get action on the bases in many ways and more action in general.    

The pitch clock is great.  It makes games flow so much better.  Will they need to tweak a few things? Yes.  and hopefully these modifications will do it.  

But lets not have the pace of play in the late innings?  Why?  Because we should just throw aside rules late in games because its 'pressure' packed?  Thats dumb as you are going to have players conditioned to follow a clock and then all of a sudden you dont?  

The man on 2nd in extra innings during the regular season is just like every other league in regular season.   No need to be here until 3 am.  

And players LOVE that rule.  Thats why it exists still.  

This is also I believe a push toward fans ordering from apps and what not for concessions.  Also minor league clubs with the pitch clock basically saw no reduction in concession sales from prior to the pitch clock.  

 

I don't know about other parks, but for a few years, Marlins park has had a few items you could order on that Ballpark app - but it was limited to "smaller" items like popcorn and sodas - you couldn't order actual meals.

 

I'd totally support the idea of having all food options on the app, you click through what you want, and pay, and get a number.  You get a notification your food is ready, go up, give them your confirmation number, and leave.  There may be a short pickup line in this scenario, but I'd rather do that than wait in a line forever AND wait for the food to be ready, all while trying to watch the game on the tiny screen above the concession stand.

Faster replay reviews, bay-beeee! Squeezing managers now on whether they want to review or not and giving them less time to decide. Good. Less ticky tack "runner came one picometer off the bag so he's out" replays.

Now Marlins Park has where you order everything on your own through a kiosk and then you go to the pick up spot and pick up your order. The employees no longer take your order or your payment, they're just there to organize the orders and hand them to you when ready. And it asks for your phone number so that it sends you the confirmation number as a text to your phone.

So technically what you're proposing is already in the works, you'd just be doing it off your phone instead of off the kiosks.

Now that you mention that, I do think there were a few kiosks that started doing that way back when I last went to a game.

So in that scenario, you're still having to wait in line to the kiosk.  I figure it'd be nice to be able to cut out that dead waiting time so you don't miss the game unless you just want to walk around.

 

We're just trying to remove any and all human interaction aren't we?  haha

Do they need to do anything about outfield shifts? Saw one play the other day where an OF was all the way in and basically was an extra infielder. On one hand, it gets around the new rule. But on the other, it does weaken the outfield defense if a fly ball was to be hit.
