Have to imagine he'd be gone otherwise since MLB said his performance was the reason for him not getting the assignments. They must have some kind of protections from termination due to performance.

OK so ... are umpires hired by MLB or is it a contractual thing that's separate from MLB and MLB hires that separate group that has umpires? If it's the latter, why not just let that contract lapse and have internal hires? That way these guys can be hired and fired and demoted as necessary. KBO once demoted an entire crew of umpires because they were bad for one series.
August 15, 20233 yr The guy is objectively terrible. Terrible calls both behind the plate and elsewhere around the field, and he thinks it's because of a grudge by Torre and of course....race? Ok.... The dude is lucky to still be an MLB ump at all. Also, how are you "'interim' crew chief" for 5 years? The article said he was interim CC from 2011-2016.
August 15, 20233 yr Also, I know there are only so many umpires, so naturally over the course of years of watching, the public/we will end up knowing their names eventually. But when literally everyone knows the ump's name because of how bad the calls always are, that's bad...

Yea there's a familiarity issue with him but the problem with him is that his errors are blatantly and objectively wrong. It's not questionable stuff. You can lay out his body of work and it's ridiculous. Most other jobs get rid of people as ineffective as him.
August 15, 20233 yr Who woulda thought Angel Hernandez and "getting a call right" would be in the same story for once? Edited August 15, 20233 yr by hovertical
