I guess I would then be curious how you can pretend to not view it as a sport when you said you followed a guy's whole career who is now wrapping it up and then compared it to Miggy.....the whole thing has a sporting career arc to it so i don't get the non-sport comparison and then i circle back to there's no actual competition so the whole thing still seems so alien.  It's apples and oranges to me and just doesn't make sense to compare it to a movie franchise.  I would venture to say more like a "Reality TV" show?

Good question, cuz outside of when I was a young kid I don't really care who wins in a sporting sense. I wanna know what's gonna happen next in the narrative. It's not about the competition. As for matches, there's a process and a psychology to how to "perform" a match and I'm interested to see people do it... maybe figure skating is a better comparison? If you like figure skating, or maybe gymnastics, you watch to see the performance routine. And when I've seen this wrestler's entire career of performances, I'm enjoying watching him do it the last few times around.

As for Star Wars and all of that, the point there is that nobody watches that and continously goes "oh that's not real, people can't use Jedi powers." If you watch that you just accept whatever is established as reality within the movie or whatever and then you just enjoy it as is. Pro wrestling is like the only form of entertainment that for some reason people constantly point out that it's fiction. 

Also for me there's a constant knowledge of the writing and creative aspects and decision making behind wrestling so I often watch to know "what are they going to write this week based on what happened last week and what's coming next week." So there's a critical aspect of it as well. I guess that's like watching a TV show and thinking about the writing of it. 

You ever seen the trailer to a movie that you weren't planning to see but you see the trailer and you go "hmm, that's an interesting plot, I'd like to know what happens" and then you watch the movie just because you're curious what's gonna happen? Pro wrestling has a lot of that.

Those who don't watch every show might come across the hype for a specific match or storyline and then jump back in for a while because they wanna know the resolution.

i still argue those are terrible comparisons simply because wrestling content is crafted within the scope of a real-life sports competition whereas Star Wars is not...star wars is 90% cgi and has almost zero basis in reality.  That's probably why people will always point out that wrestling is fake whereas I've yet to meet a soul who believes Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. is real. Those movies are not crafted to portray something in a real world.

I'm sure there are SOME people who believe SW is real but they don't count.

Ok fair point, so take a tv show that's based in reality, The Office? ER? Friends? They're fictional but nobody watches those and says "thats not real." Same thing with wrestling. Wrestling fans aren't trying to believe it's real. We just enjoy the show. And yes we know it can be hokey as hell.

i also have a brother-in-law who actually does believe it's real though lol - I can give you his number if you wish to have a talk to him about it.

Pro Wrestling is basically a male soap opera.

Not fake, rather scripted. Think of it like a bunch of stuntpeople and acrobats putting on live shows every night (house shows) for your entertainment.

See it as theater, suspend disbelief. Get into the storylines and watch it play out. Stuff like that.

But as SB and Jack said, not for everyone. Game of Thrones isn't for everyone. Stranger Things isn't for everyone.

I just don't get why people care about something that is a totally fake sport as there's no actual competition going on.

Seasons 1&3 were awesome. Season 2 has its moments but this last season was dogshit.

Anyway, I think the theater comparison works well since it's mostly live.
