Hutton coming on with Boog
Did you hear Boog mention how someone sent him a link to "a Marlins fan site" where people were upset about D-Lee's comments during the HR Derby? Hmm...I wonder what site that would have been... :whistle

7/14 Marlins at Phillies
I get the game on MLB Extra Innings free preview! So we better win...
-
Hey out of market fans
OK I don't know if this is going on for everyone, but I'm pretty sure it is. Starting tonight and going through the weekend, MLB Extra Innings has a preview. So us out-of-market people who normally can't see the Marlins on TV will be able to watch the Phillies games (in addition to any other MLB game you want to see). If you're not sure, find out what Extra Innings channel the game would be on and turn to it at gametime to see if it works. Of course, last year the preview weekend was when we were in Pittsburgh...we all know how that went. :plain

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
I think we can all agree that if people are still upset about 1998, then it is time to get over it. Yes we had a few years of struggles, but we won the whole thing again in 2003 and didn't dismantle for '04. Its really an old and pathetic excuse already. 854436 I agree totally, it makes no sense to still be upset over '98. Some people are, though. It's pretty ridiculous.

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
You see, the problem with Dolphins Stadium is that you are constantly reminded that you are at the Dolphins' stadium. From the retired numbers of former Dolphins players inscribed on the upper deck bowl to the endless sea of orange seats, you are constantly reminded that this football stadium has been turned into a "temporary" place for baseball. That is a good point. And I would just like to add, bad location for whom? I swear if the ballpark isn't in their backyard, then people will always complain about this same issue. :plain 854374 That's what I said...with the stadium location as it is now, the people that complain are those in Miami (the city) and farther south. If the stadium goes by the OB then most of the people who are satisfied with the current location will be upset...if I still lived where I used to live in Florida, I would be. I don't count that as the main factor in low attendance because no matter where the stadium is, there are going to be people who go when it's close and don't go when it's far away and it's probably going to be about the same number of people, or at least not a big enough difference to drastically affect the attendance long-term. The other reasons, people being just bandwagon fans, or the team not having had time to build up a presence in South Florida, or people being upset over '98, and so on...those are the major factors.

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
Notice how the majority of the E voters (with a few exceptions) are out of towners who do not understand the complexities of S. Fla. Adding to Marlins2003's post, people also need to realize that Miami is one of the fastest growing and youngest cities in this country. You don't need to go far back more than 50 years to see a small tourist town where people came to retire. Now its become a major city, but still in the works, construction everywhere. The stadium needs to be in downtown miami or downtown ft lauderdale to help with attendance. Ft lauderdale didnt offer their land nor money. The main city, Miami, did both. The current stadium is in the middle of nowhere, and unless you've lived in Miami and understand traffic patterns you wont know that going north at 530-600 is murder. I, as most people do, go to work. 630-330 are my hours. I leave work, get home at 430, leave house at 5, make it to stadium half an hour late. Disgusting traffic and no alternative. If your traveling south the traffic is much better than traveling north, at least as far as the stadiium is concerned, b/c then theres the 826 south traffic that clogs up around coral way. 853916 I think the divide in E voters and non-E voters (just from looking at the posts) is largely a Miami vs. Broward/Palm Beach thing. I can't really blame anyone for it, but everyone wants the stadium close to them. If you're in Broward, Palm Beach, or northern Dade, the stadium location is fine. If you're in Miami and points south, you want the stadium in downtown Miami. Unfortunately, like I said earlier, the population is so spread out that there's no way to please everybody.

Baseball Sayings that you hate
I hate it when a pitcher is said to throw gas. Does he really throw propane up there or something? I also hate it when they say speed doesn't slump, apparently it does or baserunners wouldn't get nailed trying to steal. 853495 I think JP is a pretty good example of the idea of speed slumping. Look at most of last season and this year up until the last few weeks...I'd say that's a speed slump. Also about McCarver...do any of you guys remember when Fox had the Marlins last season and he said that Miguel was a "goooooood looking" young hitter? I still crack up about that one.

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
Being from Central Florida I can only specualte why the fan support is so poor. I drive down 2-3x each year and have had encounters with rain delays at least one of those games each year. I think if there was a retractable stadium it would help attendance. I also think that the location of the stadium really sucks. IN places like Boston, Chicago and New York the stadiums are part of the neighborhood and there are things to do near the stadium. Finally I think there is a lot of indifference on behalf of the fans. Miami tradionally has been Dolphin country and IMO baseball isn't seen on the same level as football. In recent years the Dolphins haven't drawn well either so I think it might have to do with location, location, location. 852502 Part of that is that there isn't a real "neighborhood" vibe in South Florida...the population is just too spread out. I don't feel like looking at the census stuff but the city of Miami is somewhere in the range of #49 in population in the US while the metro area (which includes Broward and Dade for sure, and probably some of Palm Beach as well) is in the top 10. So there are a lot of people who live in the giant metro area called "South Florida" but spread along the beaches, western suburbs, etc. and it would take some massive cooperation (and a ridiculous amount of money) between the counties to get a public transportation system to handle all that, given that the places people want to go are spread out so much. In Boston, going with a park and area I know decently well...the city itself is where most everything goes on and it's very easy and convenient to take the T to Fenway, and then there are restaurants and stuff all around the area, and even to go all the way across the city isn't really that far.

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
Well I'm telling you right now if HALF of the posters on this site are from Florida, then the answer is undoubtedly that South Florida's fans suck. Because most of the people on this site are awful. The team is the greatest thing ever on the day they win, and the entire team should be shot on a day they lose. And it's like that EVERY SINGLE GAME of an 162 game season. I swear you people are all nuts. I lived in Chicago for 25 years, so you know what the baseball fans have gone through there. And yes there are bad seeds in every baseball town. But in terms of fan base, there is no comparison. I love the Marlins, have since they became a team. But frankly, South Florida does not deserve 2 World Series Championships in the span of 7 years. 852418 I don't like when people say that...I get what you're saying but it seems like a shot at the team itself because of its fans or whatever. They "deserve" 2 WS Championships in 7 years because the players earned them, whether there are 5 people at the game or 500,000. Man Boog was giving that guy a hard time...and he's exactly right. South Florida isn't like Chicago, isn't like Boston, etc. in terms of needing a downtown stadium.

They're actually talking about this topic on Boog's show right now.

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
I have seen the game now where the Marlins get very few fans. I personally believe that this is due tothe true capacity of this football stadium. Fans feel like "want to go to a game?" more than "want to try to get tikets to the game?' 852392 That's one thing that's really frustrating to be up here now instead of in Florida. When I lived there, going to the Marlins game was a last-minute decision: "Hey, wanna go to the game tonight? Sure!" But when I want to see a Sox game it's like...we'd have better luck driving to Baltimore (except for those last-minute Yankees tickets we somehow got for $20 last year).

Marlin Nation
Cranston, Rhode Island...or you can just say Providence. We're all 10 minutes from Providence anyway, the entire state is smaller than Broward County.

What is your theory behind poor fan support?
Probably one of the most accessible sports stadiums in the country. 852361 :thumbup I mean...you have to drive there...but you have to drive everywhere in FL so it's not a big deal. I think people who haven't spent an extended amount of time in South Florida don't really get it. In many cities it's nice to have the stadium downtown because people don't drive, but pretty much everyone drives in FL and in that case, you want the stadium near major highways, which it is. Why do you think the Dolphins relocated there to begin with?
-
What is your theory behind poor fan support?
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION so many more people would go if the stadium were easily accessible 852353 I don't get this idea at all...the stadium is very accessible. It's right near 95, Turnpike, and major local streets. edit: I voted E, and I don't really mean that South Floridians are bad baseball fans alone, I lived there for 18 years and in general we are the biggest bunch of bandwagoners around.

It FINALLY arrived!
Nice man. Awesome setup in your room. Now imagine your room, except with Panthers stuff and you pretty much have my room. I also have quite a bit of Marlins stuff too. 813625 We've got some pretty sweet Panthers stuff here too, cause the seasons they were horrible they did awesome things for season ticket holders. We've got a Pavel Bure autographed stick they just gave to us at the end of one season, and my sister got both Bures to autograph an ASG plaque from the year they played together. We've got some various Marlins and Dolphins stuff too but those two things are probably the coolest we've got.

When are the Marlins going to have....
Anyone who saw Cabs tonight...dude is begging to be in the Derby next year. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up taking a bat to Abreu to make sure he got picked next season.
