Lindstrom opening eyes in camp
notice how I called religion silly and not the kid. another case of reading comprehension gone awry. and, no, you said more. you said his 3yr layoff from baseball could have helped his velocity (huh?), while I said that it cost him money and a stunted career track. which statement looks ridiculous? oh, you are full of yourself

Lindstrom opening eyes in camp
that's terrible. his silly religion has already cost him a ton of money and definitely hurt his career track. btw he added velocity after coming back. so it might have actually helped his career. are you saying every Marlin's pitcher should take a mission trip to Holland then? or some some sort of 3-yrs layoff where no baseball activity occurs? sign this kid up beinfest! oh give me a f***in break. All's im saying is that its stupid to be bashing this kid for following his beliefs. And in the end it worked out good for him and he's now in a good postion to get his career going. If ya ask me all has turned out quite good for him. And btw i'll be a jackass and point out that he went to Sweden, not Holland.

Dare I say.....
the papers seem to be suggesting it is between petit, chris george, and mitre (if ready). Freddi seems to like George.

Johnson in limbo for Opening Day
JUPITER, Fla. -- From the start of Spring Training, the Marlins stated they were taking it easy with Josh Johnson's sore right triceps. Rather than rush any Grapefruit League starts, the objective has been to get the 6-foot-7 right-hander ready for Opening Day. Now, that deadline may not be realistic. Still sore, Johnson was scratched from a basic throwing session on Saturday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. Right now, he doesn't know when he will throw again. He says he is day-to-day. Johnson felt discomfort in his triceps throwing off flat ground on Jan. 19. He shut down tossing until Wednesday, where he felt fine after about 30 throws. But on Thursday, his arm didn't feel right during a followup session of catch. Friday was a scheduled day off from throwing, but Saturday he was again slated for a session of tosses at 60 feet. Those plans changed when he arrived at the field not feeling ready. "Anytime that he doesn't feel good, it's going to be a concern," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him. He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at." Gonzalez confirmed that having Johnson ready for when the season opens on April 2 also may be unrealistic. "You know the math," Gonzalez said, referring to how many days Johnson would need to get ready. "If he's not on the hill, then the Opening Day issue and the Opening Day roster issue is a problem." Gonzalez says "we're borderline now" on a timetable. Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2006, is one of the club's top starters. Right now, he is more concerned about just getting his arm strong than worry about being ready for Opening Day. "'We'll see how I feel and how I'm reacting," Johnson said. "It's day-to-day." The last time Johnson threw full speed off the mound was on Sept. 12, when he experienced right forearm tightness after a five-inning outing against the Mets. Johnson says his forearm feels fine, and the soreness is in the back of his triceps. As of this point, he plans no further X-rays or MRI exams. With Johnson ailing, candidates to fill in for his rotation spot are Sergio Mitre, Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia. Non-roster invitees Wes Obermueller and Chris George also could factor into the mix. Mitre is currently being groomed along slowly as he recovers from a shoulder problem that caused him to miss a majority of 2006. Anibal Sanchez, who was bothered by shoulder discomfort a few weeks ago, also is taking it slowly, although he's throwing off the mound. With Johnson's status unclear, the team now has every intention to keep Ricky Nolasco in the rotation instead of switching him to closer. Kevin Gregg is a favorite to emerge as the closer. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla

Hardaway Hates Gays
Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway, known for his candor, said on a radio show Wednesday that he would not want a gay player on his team, would ask for him to be traded, and went so far as to say: ``You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States.'' Hardaway was a guest with host/Herald columnist Dan Le Batard on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket, and at the end of the interview, Le Batard asked Hardaway how he would deal with a gay player, in light of last week's disclosure by retired NBA center John Amaechi that he is gay. ''First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team,'' Hardaway replied. ``And second of all, if he was on my team, I would really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room. But stuff like that is going on and there's a lot of other people I hear that are like that and still in the closet and don't want to come out of the closet, but you know I just leave that alone.'' Asked what he would do if he had a gay teammate, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be traded or to be bought out of his contract. ''Something has to give,'' he said. ``And I think the majority of players would ask for him to be traded or they would want to be traded. Or buy him out of his contract and just let him go. Something has to give. If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that are upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate.'' Hardaway is the first NBA player -- current or former -- to make anti-gay statements since Amaechi's news came out. In fact, most of the players and coaches quoted last week, including Heat center Shaquille O'Neal, were supportive of Amaechi and said they would not be bothered by a gay teammate. What if the gay player were a great player, Hardaway was asked. ''If he were that great something would still have to give,'' he said. ``People would feel uncomfortable with that. If you're not gay, nobody in that locker room would feel comfortable with that person on your team.'' Amaechi probably will not be surprised when he reads Hardaway's comments. He said in a phone interview Tuesday he believes there is still a lot of homophobia in society and in professional sports locker rooms. ''We are much further behind than I'd like,'' Amaechi said. ``People in America and England [where Amaechi grew up]would like to think racism is over, sexism is over, and homophobia is over, but it's not. My coming out will show that gay people don't all look like Jack from Will and Grace. Some of us are big, athletic men, and that should be OK.'' Amaechi said he had not heard from a single former teammate or NBA player, that he had only heard from former coach Doc Rivers. He challenged straight athletes ''who feel able'' to stand up for gay rights. ''I would like professional male athletes to be active supporters, and that doesn't mean putting a rainbow decal on their car,'' he said. ``It means letting other guys in the locker room know that it's not OK to make gay jokes, that it's hurtful, and that it's not OK to be homophobic. ``But it's hard to get straight guys to step up. When men stood by women during the suffrage movement, they were called progressive and bold. When whites stood by blacks, they were heroes. But a straight guy standing up for a gay guy faces discrimination, and that's a big part of the battle we're fighting.'' http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/16700045.htm

Villone Signs with Yanks
TAMPA, Fla. -- Reliever Ron Villone agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Yankees on Tuesday and was invited to the team's major league spring training camp. The 37-year-old left-hander went 3-3 with a 5.04 ERA in a career-high 70 games with the Yankees last season. Villone has pitched for 10 major league teams and has a career mark of 55-57. Villone made $2.1 million last season. He would get a $2.5 million, one-year contract if added to the major league roster and would have the chance to earn $300,000 in performance bonuses: $100,000 each for 55, 60 and 65 games. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press how the hell, with all the crazy contracts, does he get a minor league deal? BTW I think he sucks...but still

Our Good Friend Matt Herges
DENVER -- Right-handed pitcher Matt Herges agreed to a minor league contract Monday with the Colorado Rockies, who invited him to their spring training camp. If added to the 40-man roster, Herges would get $600,000, one-year contract and the chance to earn $150,000 in performance bonuses. Herges, who turns 37 on April 1, went 2-3 with a 4.31 ERA in 66 relief appearances for the Florida Marlins last season. The one-time closer for the San Francisco Giants has a 32-29 record and a 3.89 ERA over his eight-year career that also includes stops with the Dodgers, Expos, Padres, Diamondbacks. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?i...ce=MLBHeadlines

Expected Lineup
Done with five weeks of jury duty in Atlanta, new Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez shared some nuggets with spring training six days away: He expects this batting order: Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, Miguel Cabrera, Josh Willingham, Jeremy Hermida, Mike Jacobs, Miguel Olivo, center fielder and pitcher. He listed Alex Sanchez, Reggie Abercrombie and Eric Reed as candidates to start in center, with Alfredo Amezaga ''an option if the other stuff doesn't pan out.'' ( Joe Borchard and Cody Ross said they also would like a chance to compete for the job.) Gonzalez believes Jacobs ''might be at that point . . . to let him play every day;'' said Ricky Nolasco will be a starter early in spring training to get innings, even though he could be moved to the closer's role; and said of Hermida: ``When he clicks, watch out. You're going to have a superstar there.'' ? Among relievers coming off surgery, Travis Bowyer (shoulder) might not pitch this year, Carlos Martinez (elbow) is ahead of schedule and could be back before the All-Star break, and Logan Kensing (elbow) said he's targeting a July return. + http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/16671903.htm i thought he would go jake, willy, hermida. I like it though, not afraid to bat two lefty's back to back. :thumbup

FanFest 2007
A high number of Marlins players were at FanFest. But one noticeable absence was three-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera. "[Owner]Jeffrey [Loria] and the organization are very disappointed Miguel isn't here," Samson said. "He should have been here with his teammates, there is no question about that. It's a shame for all the fans who wanted to see him. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla

What I learned..
Expect to see Chris Volstad and Gaby Sanchez up no later than September. Both are far more advanced than their rotation mates in Jupiter. Interesting. What will happen with gabby if jake breaks out this year.

Yet ANOTHER option gone
I don't see why Cody can't be the CF. Sure, he's not gonna be a gold glover, but he's just as good of a defender as anyone else outside of Reed. In 270 AB's he hit 13 HR's and 46 RBI's. Give him 400-500 AB's and he's putting up pretty good #'s for a 7 hitter.

Darin Erstad?
Darin Erstad will sign a one-year deal with the White Sox, MLB.com reports. An option for 2008 is included. Erstad is set to battle Brian Anderson and Ryan Sweeney for the center field job this spring. He could also play some left if Scott Podsednik isn't going to be ready for the beginning of the season. Ideally, he'd be a fourth outfielder. However, there's a good chance he'll play over Anderson against right-handers until he gets hurt again. great :confused sanchez here we come

Marlins, Cabrera fail to work out deal
i think the fish will win with gregg, who is asking 700,000 compared to 575,000. Cabs is up for grabs because his case is very unique.

any idea what kind of money gregg is looking at?

Pirates No Longer Interested In Braves LaRoche
id love to send jake, petit, messenger, petit for gonzalez and nady. I'd rather hold on to Gonzalez though. At this point messenger, mitre are worthless with a real closer, and petit's future is questionable. Nady would be fine at 1b. I'd love to see us ship some of our lesser arms for some real talent. I also wouldn't mind if we'd get a CF from them and move Willy to first. I'd be fine with Cody in LF and with giving Carroll a shot in ST. And who knows maybe a miracle would occur and Stokes will have a healty year and bust out. While I do like the crop op ST invitees, chances only a few of them can stick. But with a pen of gonzalez, tank, owens, gregg, pinto, and Alfonseca/Koplove/Rodriguez id be happy. Bottom Line: I like our options with this trade.
