1. Question of the day: Why was Armando Benitez not warming up when trouble was brewing in the 10th? Always easy to second guess i suppose, but I was saying to myself the whole inning Mando should be heating up. Oh well...tough one to swallow, especially when two guys who have looked so reliable blew this game for us tonight, hopefully Rudy and Mota redeem themselves tomorrow.
2. Hopefully for our sake they get the deal with Tommy done...never take good announcers for granted, they can make or break the enjoyment of the game sometimes. Any Panther fans know what I'm talking about :lol :fyou Jeff Rimer. Thank GOD he is gone.
3. Fox loves the duo of Hutton and Kasper, he will be back 519624 Who wouldnt? Len and Tommy do a great job. The only broadcasters I'd consider over our two are the CWS pair. You can put it on the board.....YES! :lol
4. And for those wondering why I'm so critical of Choi... I like Choi, I really do, but he's just not exactly what I'd call a sure thing. There's not much grey area with guys like him...they either become superstars or just can't hit major league pitching to save their life. His career thus far has taken a similar path to that of Russell Branyan and that scared the living piss out of me. I would have liked to have him here for the long run if he continued to develop, but I'm still skeptical that that will happen. Time will tell on how this deal works out...in the short term, Florida makes out significantly, in the long run, LA could have an advantage depending on Choi's development.
5. I still think it is a horrendus deal.? Tonight along with the St. Louis and home series against Milwaukee proves why it was a bad deal again.? We didn't get any better offensively.? We still don't score runs, period.? Even against mediocre or worse pitching.? We got significantly worse in starting pitcher to get better in the bullpen.? You are a fool to think that the bullpen - which wasn't that bad to begin with - is more important than starting pitching.? Not to mention, we are stuck paying encarnacion 4 million next year, which may cost us whatever chance we have to hold onto Pavano.? So? in the end, it could not only damage currently but destroy the marlins.? It was a terrible deal that set us back a couple years.? A five hundred record since the trade with Lo Duca temporarily overperforming, Valdez having his best start of the year followed by a more typical 5 run performance, Encarnacion doing about what he is capable of in hitting .230, Choi not performing in 14 games, and Penny having one lights out start and then getting hurt does not change my mind.? And I would like to add that the Choi part of the deal is not what killed the Marlins.? It was breaking up what was turning into the best young starting staff in the league for very little in return.? I will always think this is a terrible deal, even if Penny blows out his arm and never pitches again. 516717 Wow...are you watching the same team we are? Sure as hell doesn't look like it. Lo Duca is far and away a better offensive player than Choi is right now...you can't even compare the two. So to say we didn't improve any offensively is pretty ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is you saying our bullpen wasn't in piss poor shape prior to this deal, especially with Armando in question. I like Koch a lot, but he's not consistent enough to be a trustworthy setup man. The fact of the matter is that our bullpen was a ticking bomb..they were bad about to go on awful with Benitez hurt. We were riding minor league fodder like Manzanillo, Perisho, Bump the first half of the year, but that surely wasn't going to last very long...as you can see. I like Penny, but I think everyone realizes that one of Pavano or he would not be back next year either way. Dealing Penny midseason doesn't give you many options for a replacement, but Valdez will do for half a season. He's obviously not in the long term plans. You say Encarnacion is hitting what he's capable of hitting, .230, well I could counter that with Choi is hitting what he's capable of hitting in LA, .200. I obviously don't believe that, and I hope for your sake you don't either. You saw Encarnacion hit .280 last year with 20 HR and 90+ RBI, so what would make you say such an idiotic statement? I'm not Encarnacion fan, but everyone and their mothers know he's underperforming, like Choi in LA.
6. Sorry Swede, Don't buy it. While I agree OBP can be a telling stat in some cases, you greatly exaggerate its meaning. Just using this as an example, but Bobby Crosby and Jack Wilson have identical OBPs this season...would you try telling me Crosby has been just as productive as Wilson has this year? Give me a break...Gonzalez is a free swinger, he's not the only one to ever take this approach at the plate, so he is bound to take few walks. Couple that with a .250 average and logic tells you he's bound to have a low OBP. Getting on base is not the only way to produce offensively however, and Gonzalex proves that point. Only Miguel Tejada, Carlos Guillen and Jose Valentin have more HR than Gonzo in the league, and Tejada, Guillen, Valentin, Michael Young have more RBI. He hits for power and knocks in runs, while playing gold glove defense...you're being awfully narrow minded to say he sucks simply because of his OBP. He's far from perfect, I think everyone here knows that. But his defensive value (you're kidding yourself if you think he isn't among the best here) and power numbers make him well worth the 4 mil hes due to get paid next year.
7. again whats our record since the deal? shut up and i like the deal but stop with this bulls*** every f***ing night 515842 These boards are made to discuss and debate anything Marlin related...if you dont like the subject, then dont read it, it's that simple. No reason to get your panties in a bunch over it
8. LoDuca is batting .600 with the bases loaded....he or Niner would do. :thumbup
9. Gotta send Niner up with the bases loaded... :thumbup
10. The reason we should trade Alex Gonzalez besides that he makes $4 million is that he is statistically the second worst hitter in baseball. he has a .272 on base percentage, which is up about 12 points from the .260 he was at a week ago (when he was statistically the single worst hitter in baseball). It is devastating to a lineup when a player is getting out 74% and now 73% of the time. He is virtually an automatic out. And in response to the quote about how he would be a .270 hitter without the first month, you could also look at it that he would be a .200 or worse hitter without that stretch against interleague play. Alex Gonzalez goes into such long, deep, and pronounced slumps so often that he cripples a lineup. His week or two of hitting does not outweigh the 5 weeks he will hit .150. Couple that with Encarnacion's .290 OBP (meaning he gets out 71% of his plate appearances) and put a pitcher behind the two, and Marlins pretty much give away 9 outs or three innings a game. That means that we only have a chance to really score 6 out of 9 innings. A player cannot get out at that rate without hurting his team. The Marlins could easily (and more cheaply) replace Alex with a guy who is close if not as good as him in the field and, at the same time, not have this guy devastate the team offensively. Perhaps Josh Wilson is that man. It is clear that I am not an Agon fan. In fact, I boo him and Encarnacion at most games. However, I do think that Agon has potential. Unlike Encarnacion, his bat speed and hand-eye coordination are not his problem. He just has possibly the worst control of the strike zone and plate discipline in the league. I read one account, which said he was a reactive hitter. Meaning he pretty much swings at anything regardless of the count or situation. He doesn't look to drive the ball in hitter's counts or foul off pitches in hitter's counts. he just swings, reacts, to every pitch and whatever happens happens. the point of this is that he can be a good hitter if he learns not to be a reactive hitter and learns pitch selection. However, it is debateable if any player, especially him, could learn that this late in a career in the majors. The Marlins would be much better off moving Gonzalez and Encarnacion. but that is why the marlins should trade him. Plus for some strange reason i don't understand, people think he is good, so maybe we can get some good prospects for him. 512563 All you prove here is why OBP is such an overrated stat. The glass can be half empty or full, but you forgot to mention the fact that he leads all NL short stops in HR and RBI. Couple that with the gold glove defense and you have youself a bargain at $4mil per. Let me ask you this -- and im NOT trying to take a shot at Choi because I like him. But who do you think was more productive? Choi is just as streaky as Alex, his OBP is extremely good, yet Gonzalez has been a much more productive player than Choi. He's 3rd on this team in RBI batting in the 7th/8th holes all year...thats impressive considering he had Mike Redmond and the pitcher protecting him most of the year.
11. While I am probably baised, I too agree it would be a mistake to deal Gonzalez now. He's finally coming into his own, and although he still needs to work on making consistent contact, If it werent for the first month of the season he'd be around a .270 hitter. He leads the NL SS's in HR's and RBI's and I dont even need to start on his defensive value to this team. Wilson may be good, who knows, but we need to learn from the past -- you dont hand starting jobs to young kids, let them earn it like Miguel did, and Dontrelle did when they were called up to the bigs last year.
12. I would switch Aguila with Gonzalez, but other than that, looks good. :thumbup
13. Marlins look like a AAA team, not the DBacks. Our 38 year old veteran should be the last one making these kind of mistakes. They're just lack of concentration and yet some more proof why this team wont make the playoffs.
14. I smell something. 494306 Excuse me. :plain
15. Nunez was a good pinch runner/defensive replacement...don't know how that is a complete waste, but OK. He didnt produce like alot of you guys thought he would after spring training, but to say he didnt do ANYTHING is ridiculous. Wonder who gets the call up now..Aguila? Sutton?
16. Bullpen looks alright now...still the same weakness as last year, no proven lefty reliever, but Perisho will have to do. Hope Abe gets a chance to play in KC...He has alot of talent, hopefully he can put it together.
17. Just said on ESPN news that the Walker deal will not happen...and they have turned their attention to another SP and possibly another RP.
18. blind, stupid or wrong take your pic 485113 How bout all three?
19. ESPN Confirms...its official. Good luck in LA, Brad and Hee Seop. :violin http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1849414
20. Good news on Spooneybarger....just say NO to Contreras!
21. Dontrelle has been hitting 92-94 MPH consistently today...is his velocity back after a year and a half? When he was first called up I remember his fastball being in that range, then he dropped to around 88-89 MPH.
22. Dontrelle just hit a ball at his eyes for a single... :lol
23. Thome Singles...3-2, men on 1st and 2nd, no outs. :plain
24. :plain Penny out...Aaron Small coming in...
