Jayson Stark on Baseball Financials
2003, over the years I have concluded you are either : 1) Loria himself (LOL) or 2) A Marlins PR rep or 3) someone that took a lot of drugs in the 1990's It was the sixties and god it was great!!! As for the rest of your diatribe it's one factual mistake piled on top of another so why bother...the one thing I agree with you on is that over the last three or four years they have been amassing a significant portion of their contribution towards the new stadium. I've said that myself many times and it's reasonable to do so given the rest of their financial situation. You see that as some kind of sin, I don't, we'll just have to disagree but I will say I suspect it's being done with the tacit approval of MLB and the majority of owners who want to keep baseball in South Florida. Wow, I think we agree on this. I think he has stuffed his pockets with revenue sharing money since the '06 season to the tune of ~$100 million and I think he'll probably use that money to help pay for his share of the stadium.

I'm Trading JJ
I'm just too curious to know the thinking behind all the slinging for the fences on this topic. Happ had a better ERA last season, pitches on the total cheap ... saving the Marlins millions next season ... and would come to the Marlins in the company of additional talent. Happ is also a reliable lefty, which the Marlins could certainly use. What makes JJ an ace and why the Happ smear? ERA, ratio ... it's all basically the same. Many people don't think Happ is as good as his ERA would indicate because his Ks and BBs are mediocre and his overall BA allowed as well as his BA allowed with runenrs on base were both very low and supposedly both of these things probably wont repeat themselves. My guess is he'll be about an average starter going forward.

I don't understand why MLB has revenue sharing if owners like Loria are allowed to pocket the money rather than spending it on payroll and player-development.

Tiger Woods seriously injured in car accident
Apparently his wife was beating the crap out of him so he got in the car to try to escape but even after getting in the car she was chasing after him with a golf club and that caused the accident.

Marlins Interested In Jamey Carroll
If that happens 1000 PAs from Boni + Carroll would be devastating.

Why Become A Marlin's Fan?
I want to demonstrate to my audience that payroll is not that important and that our team can win by other means such as good scouting, smart spending, etc. You're in luck. I read your post and thought "wait a minute, I just read something along those lines." Sure enough. I checked my standard outlets and, what do you know, Andrew Zimbalist, an economics professor at Smith College already did his pencil-pushing and wrote in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. The money quote: "... between 70% and 85% of a team's on-field success is explained by factors other than payroll." He goes on to say "Those factors can include front office smarts, good team chemistry, player health, effective drafting and player development, intelligent trades, a manager's in-game decision-making, luck, and more." The article is entitled "The Yankees didn't buy the World Series." http://online.wsj.co...1373434110.html Have fun. Just a guess but I would say over the past few seasons the teams in the top 10 in payroll have averaged around 20 more wins more than the teasm in the bottom 10 in payroll.

CHONE Projections are out
It'll be pretty hard to get to 90 wins with a .743 OPS. Yes, we won 87 games with an OPS of .743 last season but that's outperforming the Pythagorean theorem by 5 wins and I doubt that happens again.

Signing into Aol.com not working?
So have you guys seen Titanic yet? I saw it but "A Night to Remember" which came out a few years later is a much better movie. p***y Gallore looks good. Seriously though I like aol mail better than yahoo or gmail or hotmail. It's easier to manage and I like how I have access to all the personal emails I've sent since '98. I've tried yahoo and gmail and use them sometimes but don't like them.

Regalado becomes mayor of Miami
Yesterday I read that over half the city employees make over $100k a year which is incredible given that Miami is among the poorest cities in the country... 28.5% of the population is below the poverty rate and the per capita income is $15k. My head was about to explode with anger when reading that. Way to go labor unions!!!!

Free Ownership
It seem more and more people have this mindset that no one should be making money. He made some good moves and has made some money. Do you really think his goal should be to make no profit and find an equilibrium? FFS. There's nothing wrong with making money. I'll bet since the '06 season the Marlins are in the top 5 in money making and on top of that he got a new stadium that doubled or maybe tripled the value of the team so he has done a great job in the making money and wealth creation sense and should be congratulated about that. I wish the revenue sharing rules were different but hey he's just taking advantage of dumb rules.

Free Ownership
But during his seven years of owning the Marlins, Loria has received more money from baseball's revenue redistribution system than the amount he paid for the team. I'm pretty sure this is true.

Stats guru Bill James predicts big year for Marlins’ Gaby Sanchez
Bill James certainly makes for good reading but he is not a genius by any means. I will believe that Sanchez is a player when I see it at the major league level. I hope James is right about Sanchez as that would really help out the offense of the Marlins. lolwut? Historically how good are his predictions about minor leaguers?

Wow, Obama is now attacking Edmunds. Last time I bought a car Edmunds was extremely helpful to the point that I was in and out of the dealer in an hour or two so hopefully Obama doesn't shut them down

The rebates are not a complete $$ loss. A lot of the money saved has probably been spent, at least in the case of less wealthy people who received the rebates. Their methodology strikes me as suspect, as well. It requires an assumption that the demand for luxury cars changed in the same way that the demand for other vehicles did, yet there was no proof provided for this assumption, which may indeed be faulty. I wasn't in favor of the program, but I don't really this article's source, either. They're assuming the relationship between rebate eligible and non-eligible cars is holding and I think that's a fair assumption. Why wouldn't it hold? If anything I think this assumption underestimates the number eligible cars that would have being sold anyways given that in a recession some people would be more inclined to buy cheap cars as opposed to expensive ones. If this is true then the cost to taxpayers per car is a bit higher than the $24k. The purpose of the program was make the labor unions and the environmentalists happy so in that sense the program was a major success.

What a waste of money. ============ http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/28/autos/clunkers_analysis/index.htm Clunkers: Taxpayers paid $24,000 per car Auto sales analysts at Edmunds.com say the pricey program resulted in relatively few additional car sales. By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNNMoney.com senior writer Last Updated: October 29, 2009: 12:59 PM ET NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A total of 690,000 new vehicles were sold under the Cash for Clunkers program last summer, but only 125,000 of those were vehicles that would not have been sold anyway, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the automotive Web site Edmunds.com. Still, auto sales contributed heavily to the economy's expansion in the third quarter, adding 1.7 percentage points to the nation's gross domestic product growth. The Cash for Clunkers program gave car buyers rebates of up to $4,500 if they traded in less fuel-efficient vehicles for new vehicles that met certain fuel economy requirements. A total of $3 billion was allotted for those rebates. The average rebate was $4,000. But the overwhelming majority of sales would have taken place anyway at some time in the last half of 2009, according to Edmunds.com. That means the government ended up spending about $24,000 each for those 125,000 additional vehicle sales. "It is unfortunate that Edmunds.com has had nothing but negative things to say about a wildly successful program that sold nearly 250,000 cars in its first four days alone," said Bill Adams, spokesman for the Department of Transportation. "There can be no doubt that CARS drummed up more business for car dealers at a time when they needed help the most." In order to determine whether these sales would have happened anyway, Edmunds.com analysts looked at sales of luxury cars and other vehicles not included under the Clunkers program. Using traditional relationships between sales volumes of those vehicles and the types of vehicles sold under Cash for Clunkers, Edmunds.com projected what sales would normally have been during the Cash for Clunkers period and in the weeks after. Edmunds.com's estimate of the ultimate sales increase generally matches what industry experts had thought, said George Pipas, a sales analyst with Ford Motor Co (F, Fortune 500). But that misses the point, he said. "The whole purpose of the program was to provide some kind of catalyst to kick-start the economy," he said, "and by all accounts the extra production that was added this year was a boost to the economy." Ford was one of the biggest proponents of the Cash for Clunkers program and several Ford models were among the top sellers under the program. While auto sales in September were hurt because auto dealership inventories were drained of products by the program, sales this month are already back on track or better, Pipas said. "I think the October sales results will show Clunkers is behind us and there's no more payback or inventories issues." Emunds.com's projection indicates that, without Cash for Clunkers, October's sales increase would be even higher. First Published: October 28, 2009: 4:52 PM ET

Ebay - Help Needed
I haven't used Ebay since the late 90s and early 00s (it's gotten terrible now), so I might not be up to speed with how things work now. Are you seeking help to try get your password back or to still receive the item? If someone else bid on the item (and won the auction), there is nothing you can do. If nobody won the auction you can wait for him to relist it or you can try contacting the seller and purchasing it off of ebay but this has many risks involved because Ebay can do nothing to protect you. If your account is so new that you don't have any positive feedback ratings and you can't retrieve your password, I would just create a new account and make sure you remember the password so this doesn't happen again. Thanks Fish4Life and el penguino. I was seeking help to try to get the item. And yes, several people bid on it and one of them won the auction. So I'm screwed.

Ebay - Help Needed
I've never used ebay until this weekend. I join on Saturday because something I wanted was put up for sale. The bidding ends on Sunday at 1:20 PM. I stay "signed-on" throughout the entire time from when I joined. With about 15 seconds left I attempt to put my bid. Ebay prompts me for my password (although I was already "sign-on"). I know it's one of several but I don't know which. First attempt fails. Second attempt fails. Bidding period expires. I'm screwed. Is there anything I can do? My guess is "no" but I don't know.

College Football Thread - 2009 Week 8
I know national signing day is still ways away but FSU is ranked 39th according to Rivals as of now. Hopefully Bobby will retire prior to completely killing the program. http://rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?Year=2010&Page=2&PosType=0&Sort=0
