You know better then that. Hostess had been in bankruptcy in the last five years, and this was their second filing. They had a failed business model because they had provided tons of benefits for years and it ended in them being bankrupt in 2006 (I believe 2006). This second bankruptcy filing explained why they were failing, and looked to cut back on pensions and 401k's and insurance- plus other benefits, including cutting back on pay. The union decided to strike, and Hostess held on as long as they could. They even told them that they might have to shut down period if they don't come back by a certain day (yesterday). Instead of going to the negotiating table, and helping figure out how to keep the company and 18,000 union members employed in a down economy they decided to tell Hostess "Go head and close your doors for good". It was quoted in many articles some union members said they don't care if they have jobs anymore . The Teamsters union, worked out an agreement that was respectable and pleaded for the Bakery Union to come back aboard and help end the strike. The Bakers Union said on Thursday night, the day before the deadline to go back to work "Shut it down, we don't care". So when the Friday Morning deadline came to get back to work- they stayed outside and Hostess closed down for good. Even if your not satisfied with the pay your going to get, accept the job and it's terms and look for another job in the meantime. There is no reason 18k people across the entire country should be unemployed right now. None at all. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. This time, the Bakers Union screwed over the Teamsters Union and hostess. Unions can be good, but there comes a time when everyone needs to sacrifice AGAIN just to keep your head above water. Teamsters Union negotiated in good faith with Hostess. The Bakers Union wanted their cake and to eat it too. But to un-employ 18K people out of stubbornness is inexcusable. Oh well. Stanton can demand a trade all he wants but he won't get it. Not yet anyways. I think they do make some signings but no one worth getting excited over. The entire Province of Quebec is french speaking, which I'm sure makes up much of that number. The official language is french I believe, and they force coaches and players to learn french to play and work in that market. Portland plan is such a great plan for any ballpark project, it should have and could have been perfect here in South Florida- with the Heat and now Marlins playing here. They have earmarked the tax income collected by professional athletes and its teams employees taxes to go directly into payign off the debt from any ballpark or stadium that would be built in the state. With the Heat and Marlins, and I believe the Dolphins (Miami Gardens is Miami-Dade I believe) all employing such high salaried workers, their allocated tax money can pay off a significant portion of the debt. Not to mention the cut from visiting players taxes being allocated to the fund too, since if they work in Miami for 3 days- the taxes from that could pay off part of the debt as well. The main reason it wasn't used here in Miami is the lack of a State Income tax, although I'm unsure if visiting athletes still pay anyway. I believe they do.

I await your answer. Montreal isn't the only market prepared for a team to move in. Because a team could move to Montreal tomorrow and use Stade Olympique until new stadium was built. No other city has that option. Doesn't San Antonio? With the Alamodome? Or Portland with Beaver and Oregon Duck Stadiums. Or Montery, Mexico or San Juan, Puerto Rico- Portland may be the least able to hold a team at this time, but they are 200-400 Miles away from Seattle and can share Safeco for a year if needed. Alamodome is hosting MLB games this year, and Puero rico and Mexico have done so in the past- as you must know by now.

Quebec and Montreal should be as big as 1500 miles I believe but I'm on my phone And don't know how the provinces too well. Id guess the blue jays market is 1/3 of Canada. Toronto Ontario is also so big it can support two hockey teams if they wanted to and they've contemplated it. Remember the French Market is all of Montreal and Quebec, where English is the second language to French. Baseball is a niche sport in Montreal, much like Hockey is in the sunshine belt. The thrashers left and will thrive in tiny Winnipeg. The Rays can't in Montreal .

Don't ever try and tell me we didn't care about the game. Ask Dave Van Horne which is the better market (South Florida or Quebec) and he will say Montreal. You're sure about that? Yes - Dave has said that many times. There are many factors why baseball died in Montreal. In the early 80's much of the anglophone population fled to Ontario because of language laws. Until then the team did not market the francophone market as strongly as they did the anglo. However by 1994 the team was accepted in the francophone community. The stadium was bad and getting to it from the west island was worse. The Big O is located in the east end which is all French and while it was on a Metro line, the subway did not go into English areas. Baseball Montreal has met with Selig and has a plan in place but a team has to commit before a park is built. In any event we are the only city with a stadium in place. Baseball will return to Montreal at some point and if you put the new Expos in the AL East they would draw with rivals like Toronto, Yankees and Boston. You put any team in the AL east with the Boston and the Yankees and they'll draw better than Montreal in their final decade. What makes your city's stadium plan better than Portlands plan, which was approved back in 2001- also waiting for a commitment? Montreal is a crappy environment for a baseball team.

I think Charlotte and Oklahoma City are realistic places to look for expansion/relocation. I haven't looked at Oklahoma City, but there is no part of NC that is dense enough population-wise to support a MLB team. MLB would be better off contracting before moving a team to NC. What about the part that hosts the Panthers, Hurricanes and Bobcats. LOL

Yeah, its sad that a competent organization like the Rays will probably have to move, while a bunch of scumbags like Loria & Co get to keep their plundering. Only difference between the two is St. Pete's mayor refuses to discuss a New Ballpark and is holding the Rays to their lease, essentially forcing them to play in Tropicana until 2027. The earliest they can escape is 2016 I think with penalties. The Marlins lease at Sunlife was expired in 2009 and renewed on a year to year basis until Marlins Park was finished. The biggest difference? While the Rays are locked into St. Pete for atleast a decade, with no hopes of relocating soon- the Marlins were told by Sunlife Stadiums owners they were no longer welcomed as tenets full time. The Marlins were in danger of being a Homeless teen. Meanwhile the Rays according to St.Pete is the teenager going to college two miles from home and wants their own apartment- paid for by their parents. - My opinion is St. Pete is being unreasonable and the Rays need that ballpark- but they are in the right (Legally)to keep them at the Trop.
