JPMorgan Chase acquires Washington Mutual
There is nothing as of yet about the acquisition on the WaMu website. However, JPMorgan Chase has created a website for WaMu customers on what to expect: WaMu Customers, Welcome to JPMorgan Chase! We're proud to welcome you to one of the nation's largest banks; as of September 25, 2008, JPMorgan Chase & Co. has acquired the deposits, loans, and branches of Washington Mutual. Your deposits remain insured by the FDIC and are now also backed by the strength and security of JPMorgan Chase. Our combined company will offer superior banking convenience - over 5,400 branches and 14,000 ATMs in 23 states. Here's what this means for you: What's different? Your deposits at WaMu are now backed by the financial strength of Chase in addition to continuing to be insured by the FDIC. If you bank at both WaMu and Chase, your deposits continue to be insured separately today just as they were yesterday, and generally will be for another six months. At that time, your deposits will be insured by the FDIC for up to $100,000 per depositor (with an additional $250,000 for self-directed retirement accounts), and will continue to be backed by the strength and security of JPMorgan Chase. Learn more about the size and strength of our company. What stays the same? Continue to bank just as you usually do: same account numbers, same Washington Mutual name on your account, same checks, debit cards, credit cards, deposit slips, same online banking website and passwords, same branches & ATMs, same familiar bankers, and same great service! What will change? Soon You'll be able to use over 9,300 Chase ATMs fee-free - jointly, that's 14,000 ATMs for your banking convenience! In the future You'll begin to see the Chase name on your statements, online, and on your credit cards as they reissue. Your branch will be re-named Chase and you'll be re-issued new debit cards with the Chase name. Until then, bank as you do today. As our systems merge, you'll be able to use any of the Chase branches nationwide. This won't take place this year, and we'll let you know well in advance of any changes. We look forward to serving you, and to introducing new products, services, and convenience in the coming months. Tell me more* about the change to JPMorgan Chase. Visit WaMu online. Frequently Asked Questions: Q. What will happen to my account at WaMu? And to my branch? A. It's business as usual. As of September 25, 2008, JPMorgan Chase has assumed the deposit and loan accounts, and all branches, of Washington Mutual. You can continue to access your accounts just the way you've accessed them in the past: use your same branch, same debit, credit and ATM cards, same checks. Q. Is my money safe? A. Yes; in addition to FDIC insurance, now you're assured your bank is backed by the strength and security of JPMorgan Chase. If you have money in both banks, your deposits have separate FDIC insurance for up to six months. Come see us and we can help you review your coverage. Q. What if I have more than $100,000 at WaMu? A. Your money is secure and now protected by the strength of Chase. Chase assumed all deposits of Washington Mutual. Q. When can I bank at Chase branches in my area? A. We'll be working hard to combine systems as quickly as possible so you can begin to enjoy expanded branch convenience in your area, and we expect system changes to begin late next year. We'll let you know in advance of any changes; in the meantime, simply continue to bank at WaMu branches as you do today. Q. Do my direct deposit, automated payments and transfers remain the same? A. Yes. These services all continue for you without interruption or action on your part. Q. Where do I send my credit card and loan payments? A. There is no change in how or where you make payments; payment instructions and addresses remain unchanged. Q. I have a Chase credit card, car loan, and mortgage. Can I make payments at a WaMu branch now? A. Not yet! We'll let you know when you can make Chase credit card, car loan, mortgage or other loan payments at WaMu branches, or vice versa. Q. I have deposit accounts at both WaMu and Chase. Are both of my accounts insured? A. Yes! Your deposits are insured separately today just as they were yesterday, and generally will be for another six months. At that time, your deposits will be insured by the FDIC for up to $100,000 per depositor (with an additional $250,000 for self-directed retirement accounts), and will continue to be backed by the strength and security of JPMorgan Chase. Q. I'm a small business owner. What will change for my business? A. Immediately, no change at all – bank just as you do today. As our systems merge, we look forward to bringing you innovative services ranging from online invoicing to convenient ways to help you manage your cash flow. Chase is a national leader in business banking services, and is the nation's #1 SBA lender. Q. I have a relationship with the WaMu Commercial Group. What will change for my business? A. Immediately, no change at all - work with the Commercial Group just as you do today. As our systems merge, we look forward to bringing you innovative services. Chase is a national leader in commercial lending and cash management solutions.

JPMorgan Chase acquires Washington Mutual
I think they will largely keep the regular bank branches. Though honestly, as a WaMu depositor, I was considering moving to Bank of America. I think the thing that did WaMu in was acquiring all those mortgage companies. They should have stuck with what they had. Just say no, they will charge you fees for breathing air in the same county they have a branch. Well I'm not going back to Wachovia, that's for sure. I left First Union (seven years ago!) for WaMu for the fee-free checking.

Socialism here we come!
I welcome socialism, comrades. If we turn communist, THEN you can say 'comrades'. Until then, learn the difference between socialism and communism. Thanks. :thumbup This.

Couric interviews Palin
Personally I think Palin would make a better president than McCain would so I strongly disagree with the sentiments in this thread. :lol :lol You're a funny guy. He's a Libertarian. She's endorsed by the Libertarian Party. What do you expect?

Judge expected to rule Monday (today) on the Megaplan
Braman called the decision by the county to start construction on a new stadium ?ludicrous and absurd ? when there is a financial meltdown occurring in this country.? He and his lawyers reiterated their intent to appeal. :chair And the stadium will be finished by the time his appeal is even heard.

So, the official ruling is that it IS legal. We're just waiting for the Supreme Court decision to become official before signing off on it.

Greenspan: US Can't Afford McCain's Tax Cuts
You know, it's interesting... there are now accusations that Greenspan himself started this mess. (London Financial Times) And there's some saying the Democrats are at fault, for enabling the policies that led to the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. (Bloomberg) (This one also points out the large contributions both made to Democrats, including Clinton, Dodd and Barack Obama himself.) There's just a lot of mud-slinging going around on this whole mess.

FL Supreme Court rules referendum NOT required for CRA money use
http://www.miamiherald.com/459/story/691573.html In a ruling carrying implications for Miami's megaplan -- a public-works package that includes a new Florida Marlins stadium and other projects -- the Florida Supreme Court Thursday ruled that voter referendums are not required when spending large chunks of community-redevelopment money. The ruling had been holding up the final court decision in auto dealer Norman Braman's lawsuit attempting to derail the stadium. But the Supreme Court's ruling could well pave the way for the end of Braman's case. The development money, usually administered by community redevelopment agencies, or CRAs, is the glue that holds Miami's megaplan together. Although not used to directly fund the Marlins stadium, CRA money would flow to other pieces of the megaplan -- freeing up separate dollars to pay for the stadium. The voter-referendum issue has been one of the biggest headaches for megaplan backers, though they have done their best to work around it. The issue was raised by megaplan opponent Braman in court, and despite Braman's string of recent court defeats, it still had the potential to complicate the issue of stadium funding going foward. No longer. Thursday's ruling is a 180-degree about-face from a 2007 decision by the same court. Last year, Florida Supreme Court justices found that in order to bond out CRA money -- the typical method of funding big-ticket projects -- voter approval had to be obtained. That decision sent shock waves to local governments throughout the state. With CRA coffers swelled by the recent real estate boom, local governments had been assembling a virtual laundry list of construction projects to use the money on. For decades, taking that spending to voters was never a requirement. In its new ruling, the court acknowledged that its decision last year held the potential to upend the state's financial structure, which had come to depend on spending CRA money under a certain set of rules. Adding the voter requirement, the court found, "would cause serious disruption to the governmental authorities that have relied upon that precedent for planning public works that are in various stages of development and approval.'' Game, set, match. The stadium is as good as yours. :mischief

Proof of No Left Wing Media Bias
Not to mention Limbaugh's "quotes" are vastly taken out of context. The absolute worst example in history. Here's the Limbaugh routine they were taken from--I'll bold the used quote, and the original point. “Everybody's making immigration proposals these days. Let me add mine to the mix. Call it The Limbaugh Laws: “First: If you immigrate to our country, you have to speak the native language. You have to be a professional or an investor; no unskilled workers allowed. Also, there will be no special bilingual programs in the schools with the Limbaugh Laws. No special ballots for elections. No government business will be conducted in your language. Foreigners will not have the right to vote or hold political office. “If you're in our country, you cannot be a burden to taxpayers. You are not entitled to welfare, food stamps, or other government goodies. You can come if you invest here: an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage. If not, stay home. But if you want to buy land, it'll be restricted. No waterfront, for instance. As a foreigner, you must relinquish individual rights to the property. “And another thing: You don't have the right to protest. You're allowed no demonstrations, no foreign flag waving, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our President or his policies. You're a foreigner: shut your mouth or get out! And if you come here illegally, you're going to jail. “You think the Limbaugh Laws are harsh? Well, every one of the laws I just mentioned are actual laws of Mexico today! That's how the Mexican government handles immigrants to their country. Yet Mexicans come here illegally and protest in our streets! “How do you say ‘double standard’ in Spanish? How about: ‘No mas!’ ABC's bloggers took note of this and pointed it out, by the way: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/20...the-fact-1.html

Tampa Bay Rays
Some douche Red Sox fan got really drunk and picked a fight with some Rays fans in the stands. When Security and St. Pete police got on the scene, he ran down the aisle and tried to climb over the Rays bullpen before he was subdued. News says a taser gun was drawn, but never discharged. Eyewitnesses say Jonny Gomes was waiting to kick his ass if he made it over the dugout roof onto the field. :mischief

Seeing through Obamanomics
The author of the article in the OP is a right-winger spouting the same tired Republican talking points that have been used for years. 1) Clinton raised the top marginal tax rate from 31% to 39%, yet the economy was great in the 90s 2) Bush cut the top tax rate to 35%, yet the economy has been generally bad. Correlation does not equal causation As for the tired free-market-deregulation discussion: AIG, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Merryl Lynch, Subprime Mortgage Crisis Clinton also jacked up the capital gains tax, which happened upon the dot.com boom. That's why the economy appeared to boom. The bubble burst before Bush was elected.

I can't believe the news today
I would generally agree, but in the case of AIG they have $1 trillion in assets and they can pay it off by selling something. Hopefully they sell VALIC, the retirement annuity arm they have. My boss's retirement and mine are both managed by them.

I can't believe the news today
No, he would be a deadbeat. You have the mistaken belief that Democrats/liberals are okay with personal irresponsibility. That couldn't be the furthest thing from the truth. I've never seen anything to suggest otherwise.

College Football Thread - Week 4
As a USF fan, I'd MUCH rather (1000x so) forge a rivarly with a rebuilding UM then to play against UCF. It's amazing that this has been neglected. We lose UCF and gain UM. (Can't believe I forgot that) By your own logic, you're going from one "weak" school to an even weaker school. How does that help matters? Miami's reputation has been damaged so badly that they haven't received one point in the AP poll this year, not even in preseason. At least UCF has received points in the AP poll. And judging from Randy Shannon's demeanor lately, I don't see Miami's situation improving any time soon.

Greenspan: US Can't Afford McCain's Tax Cuts
It is idiotic to cut spending in a recession or depression. What happens when you can't borrow any more money to spend, or have no source to raise taxes on?
-
College Football Thread - Week 4
USF needs the credibility of playing teams like Kansas and such in order to be taken seriously, we can't get by playing FAU's and UCF's anymore. Every team plays "lesser" teams and gets by just fine. Just look at Ohio State and all the cupcakes it puts on its schedule. :mischief Besides, where will you be when Matt Grothe is gone? How do you know he's not the only reason USF is so high right now, and you won't end up 0-12 the moment he's gone, and all your hard work erased? Big-time programs take time to develop. I still say USF in the long run will regret getting rid of the War on I-4. Especially when they end up a grease spot on Miami or Florida's roster.

Greenspan: US Can't Afford McCain's Tax Cuts
Mostly he's right. Tax cuts only work if you cut spending. Unfortunately neither candidate will do this. Exactly. The United States needs to go on a diet. Everyone but those in Congress and those sucking on the Government teat sees this.
