I'm Sick and Tired of This
Hasn't Ft Lauderdale bulldozed that stadium for parking ? Since Baltimore fled, I thought it was gone. Actually, no move is official yet. The latest, released Sunday, is that Dodgertown is offering to make $15 million in renovations to Holman Stadium, and the Orioles would enjoy the same $1/year lease the Dodgers paid. Fort Lauderdale is offering $38 million in renovations to Fort Lauderdale Stadium. But the FAA, which owns the land it and Lockhart Stadium is built on, is increasing its land use fee levied on the Orioles to $1.3 million per year. They pay $120,000 per year now.

Miami Arena?
Thats another South Florida relic going to be demolished, and they already destroyed the Orange Bowl... boohoo. Calling the old "Pastel Palace" a "relic" is an insult to the word "relic"! That place was already outdated when the put the first shovels in the ground. I thought we had it bad in Orlando. :mischief

Miami Arena?
they can just build on top of the railroad/high way land. Much like the new Twins ballpark Not post 9/11 you can't. And even then it's too small. Way too small. If you shift over NW 1st Ave., you can fit Wrigley Field in there. without the outfield seats.

Miami Arena?
SERIOUSLY! I didn't think that the plot of land that the arena was on would be big enough to hold a new baseball park. does anyone know what the legal hurdles would be for the Marlins to put the stadium there. That location is much better than where the orange bowl was. The only way it is, is if the railroad running along the south side of the Arena is abandoned. If it is, you can demolish the building on the corner of N Miami Ave. and NW 6th St., and open plenty of room. You can squeeze a bit more out if you shift NW 1st Ave. a little bit to the west.

Why do I get the feeling this will end up like the Tigers/Marlins deal?

Miami Arena?
The timing of this "report" is definitely suspicious, what with the Braman trial being at a crucial stage and all. Remember the time the Marlins were in Tallahassee lobbying for State help -- using potential eviction in 2010 as leverage -- when Wayne Huizenga, out of the blue, announced to the press that he had a change of heart and would allow the Marlins to stay in DS beyond the term of their lease? It's all too convenient to be a coincidence. I dunno. Maybe he's just tired of Norm Braman's sh*t. As for the plot the Miami Arena is on... is the railroad running along its south side abandoned? If it is, then it may be possible to push NW 1st Ave. over a bit (so it doglegs between NW 5th and 6th instead of NW 6th and 7th), and build a ballpark that is more spacious than Fenway's current footprint.

Fan's Proposal
I admire the effort that the fan took and think he did a good job at designing a ballpark; however, with that being said it looks rather out of place for Miami. Too much classical column work; other than perhaps the Miami Dade Courthouse, I can't think of any significant building in Miami that has a similar sort of architecture. This looks more appropriate in Washington than Miami (and would have probably made a nice exterior than the boring outside of Nationals Park.) I think it is useless trying to design a ballpark that doesn't fit in its city. For the same reason, the "red brick, green seats" that works in Baltimore and other Northern cities wouldn't work well in Miami. Miami should have an art deco inspired exterior. The designer does make a point: the 2005 proposal looks out-of-place for Little Havana. That being said, this design looks more suited for a "Little Athens" than a "Little Havana".

Norman Braman Lawsuit Thread
source miamherald The county said it acted properly. County Finance Director Rachel Baum testified how the county's complex financial structure came together. Yet the presiding judge, Jeri Beth Cohen, asked: ``If I follow your logic, you would never have to have a referendum.'' Braman is suing Miami-Dade, Miami and the Florida Marlins for what he contends is the misuse of public funds. This concerns me It shouldn't. It's the way it is pretty much everywhere else in Florida. The actual construction of the stadium does not require a referendum. Only raising new kinds of taxes does. The only reason it was required for Rays Ballpark is because the City of St. Petersburg actually has a law requiring any new bayshore development to be approved by referendum. Not that other people haven't tried to make general stadia require a referendum. Orlando hotelier Harris Rosen tried to do that with the Orlando Events Center. The only reason he did it was because they weren't building it in I-Drive. He dropped it when he realized that any referendum wouldn't affect the Events Center, as they couldn't make a referendum requirement retroactive. This would be an interesting possibility, since Braman does appear to be taking this to a court resolution: The judge could decide that future projects have to be approved by referendum, but the Big Plan, or at least Marlins Stadium, cannot be put to referendum because it has already been previously approved.

70 people at an anti-stadium rally? Out of 2.5 MILLION? WOW! That's a HUGE share of the populace! PoWW, who went against the Rays Ballpark, organized far larger rallies. :mischief You do not ask to settle, and then turn around and try to foster support for your original side. That ought to be the nail in the coffin. This trial will be quick, and then they'll pull a WPB City Hall while Braman hopelessly appeals.

exactly. a settlement also keeps braman from going after the stadium again, whereas if he loses in court he will probably try to appeal. We have a winner! :mischief
