Nady/Marte traded

Featured Replies

I'm putting this on the Marlins forum instead of MLB because the team is unknown. Could be? We have been rumored, so when the teams are announced and if its not the Marlins, someone can move it.

EDIT: the second link know says it is to the Yankees! Hopefully someone moves this to the MLB section now.

Rightfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte have been traded by the Pirates, the club announced on Friday night. Details of the deal -- including what team or teams they are being traded to -- were not announced pending medical reviews of all players involved.

Nady, 29, who was hitting .330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBI, was removed from the game after the first inning. Marte, 33, who is 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA and five saves, was shown on television hugging teammates in the dugout.

From mlb.com

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates right fielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte have been traded from the club.

Though the team confirmed a trade, the Pirates have not revealed where Nady and Marte are going or whom the club is getting in return. According to the Pirates, those details will be revealed following medical evaluations of the players.

Though unconfirmed, the Yankees have been speculated as being on the other side of the deal. Nady started Friday's game and was removed after one inning. Television cameras caught Marte hugging his teammates in the dugout in the second inning, apparently shortly after learning the news.

From cnnsi.com

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Yankees have acquired outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte from the Pirates for Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf and two other minor league prospects.

While the trade has been agreed upon, according to Heyman, nothing will become official until all six players have been granted medical clearance.

Great trade by the Yankees.

Tabata is really the only very good prospect in the deal, and for their needs, it seems well worth it.

I think the Pirates may get a better deal in the future, since they picked up a future star in Tabata, plus P Ross Ohlendorf, P George Kontos, and P Phil Coke. Kontos has a good amount of talent.

Tabata has been horrible this year. Yea he has a lot of projection and is still extremely young for his league, but you'd at least like to see something. Anything.

I think this is a prime case of media over hyping New York area prospects. If Jose Tabata is on the Kansas City Royals, nobody cares about him except the most die hard prospect followers.

What is the point of the Pittsburgh Pirates? Seriously....do they have any plan whatsoever? Ever since their new ballpark opened, their ownership has done very little to put a winning product on the field.

Its pretty sad that the stadium didn't really do anything to help that franchise. I pity their fans.

How do you do this? With the image at the top and the little links and italic font.

I copied the page but it didn't work for me.

I certainly agree that he's overrated by the media, but he's still one of the better prospects in the game. Yes, he hasn't been that impressive this year, but a teenager being in AA is speaking volumes of him. And this is a guy who hit .307 last year last year in A+ ball as an 18 year old. Yes, he's all projection. And if he doesn't build any power as he ages he loses luster. But god damn does he project.

I'm not big on Nady because he's a career sub-.270 hitter against RHP with a .760 OPS, and this year he's OPSing .907 against them. Why? It's fueled by a .335 BA, which is fueled by an incredibly high BABIP. He's an average OFer having a good year. Marte's pretty good, but IMO you offer arbitration to him, he'll likely accept it and cash in big time.

What's the point of adding Phil Coke?

Like if their fans don't research...? What a joke. A 26 year old struggling in AAA ball; Yipee...

Btw, Phil Coke was drafted by the Marlins. :o

He'll be 20 in a little over two weeks, and we can't just keep saying 'well he is so young for his league, the potential is huge!". At some point he has to start putting up some numbers. Yea he was good last year, not great though. He had a nice BA but the power wasn't there, and he isn't stealing bases (overrated I know, but shows the speeds not there) at a good clip.

He isn't a sure-fire thing defensively in CF either so he probably profiles as a no power corner OFer. I just don't see why anyone would rank him as a top 100 prospect in baseball. He doesn't even a great body type, so you can't say he needs to fill out or anything.

Btw, the main problem with Tabata (that no one seems to be mentioning) is that he's a headcase.

You can stop saying that when he's 23ish in AA.

And last year he was an 18 year old in a notorious pitchers league. That's very very really damn impressive.

and SB don't say much about speed, really. It's about jumps and reading the pitchers and such. Although I'd say an 83% clip this year and 76% in his career is pretty good. Certainly far from outstanding, but it's a good percent.

Come on. You're better than that. If he had a more projectable body and/or tools, maybe. Fact is though is that he is only 5'11'' and hasn't shown any power, anywhere. But no way does he get a free pass and put up .600 level ops numbers for the next three years and still be a potential guy. You gotta show something.

It would have been "very very damn impressive" if he put up great numbers as an 18 year old in a pitchers league. He held his own, and yea...that counts for something and he shouldn't be expected to dominate the league, but when you follow that up with a .630 OPS, I'm not ready to label that guy a top 100 guy*

*unless he plays a premier position, and if Tabata has to move to a corner as suggested...yea...

The first part of your statement is true, but the clips aren't that impressive when your stolen base totals are less than 15.

I agree you have to show something, but I meant he'll continue to be very young for his level, and I truly feel he'll show something next season.

You're right that I did overstate that right there. very very damn impressive is more of what Logan Morrison is doing.

However

Miguel Cabrera as a 19 year old in the FSL: .274/.333/.421/.754

Tabata actually had a higher OPS than Cabs did, as a year younger. Now ofcoarse this seems to be when Cabs was stilll learning the strike zone (see horrible OBP), and Cabs showed a lot more Power (big difference in ISO, Cabs OPS being SLG driven and Tabata's being OBP driven), and I'm by NO MEANS saying that Tabata is the next Cabrera. I'm just saying, at that age in the FSL, those are good numbers.

You also have to remember he had the wrist problems last year.

And Cabs isn't the exception, he's generally the rule, he's just the first player I could think of. There's also Andrew McCutchen, as a 20 year old in AA last year he hit only .258 with a .710 OPS. Now in AAA, he's hitting .282 with a .787 OPS. Much like when you can't put stock into a player old in a level, you have to give credit to a player so young doing what they're doing at those levels. They're still developing, physically.

Age plays a very huge part about power. Power is normally the last thing to develop and continues to develop up until the late 20's for most.

As far as his body goes, you have to also remember his age (still growing), plus the fact I don't trust online height things. I remember last year during the Cabrera-to-the-Dodger talks on this forum, a lot of people were sour on Andy LaRoche because most sites had him listed at like 5'9 or something when in reality he's over 6 foot tall.

Yes yes it's all projection and I can understand being sour on that, but he still has a ton of projection compared to other players and he's continued to hit for average and high OBP up to this year, playing in levels way over his age, only not showing power, which is nothing new for players of his age. Maybe he doesn't fill out and gain any power. Probably he does.
