Posted July 2, 200420 yr Players push for upgrade By CLARK SPENCER ATLANTA - After enduring a rough June yet continuing to hang with the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East race, a roster upgrade might be necessary for the Marlins to remain in contention. That's why several Florida players said they are in favor of obtaining help before the July 31 trade deadline. ''Not taking anything away from the guys on this team, but if we want to win this thing, we need to make some moves,'' pitcher Brad Penny said. ``I think if we're going to win this thing, something's got to be done. I think we're very fortunate, with the way we've been playing, that we are even in this thing.'' The Marlins went 11-16 in June, a month in which they found runs hard to come by, signaling the need for a quality hitter. And the bullpen remains a source of concern. ''Of course it would be welcomed,'' third baseman Mike Lowell said of a possible deal or two. ``But I don't know the financial situation. I do know we need to play better. Now, whether that's going out and getting someone or bringing someone up or just banking on the guys getting better in the second half, I don't know. I just know I want to play better as a team.'' Said manager Jack McKeon: ``I think [the Marlins front office] is trying to do everything it can do to see if they can make us better.''
July 2, 200420 yr We are buyers in a seller's market. There are still too many teams that believe they have a chance. Another few weeks will separate the pretenders from the contenders, and then the market will open up.
July 2, 200420 yr A trade is imminent, now. I expect it before the end of next week. 436278 I agree. And maybe that will explain the apparently insane jockeying the past couple of weeks. And Chris Aguilla getting an unnecessary shafting. And Tejera brought up unnecessarily (because someone should have known he wasn't ready (if ever.) Watching Jack pacing the dugout, obviously pissed, you can't believe he isn't on the phone! But, as Len said on TV last night, just which position needs up-grading: stick or arm? I think we are going for both and that, post All-Star game, we are going to have a re-fortified team. Thus, he prays.
July 2, 200420 yr Watching Jack pacing the dugout, obviously pissed, you can't believe he isn't on the phone! 436294 Jack does not work the phones looking for trades. That is entirely Beinfest's responsibility.

July 2, 200420 yr The Pirates will be here on Monday. Their GM (Littlefield) knows the Marlin system very well. I'm hoping we can swing a deal with Pittsburgh. I want Kendall.

July 2, 200420 yr Only reason we won't pick up Kendall is because he has a multi-year deal. That is no good for us.

July 2, 200420 yr this team is on life support we need to make at least to big deals to stay in it...Penny said it best,he cant beleve they are still in it the way they have been playing..Penny that makes all of us...thank god the phillies have bowa steering that ship cause we should be a bunch of games behind 1st...if Loria wants to win again he'll give beinfest the ok to make the deals we need...the ball in there court...

I go by the belief that hitting is contageous, and I think that the greatest problem with the team is the coaching. I dont know, but i notice in the majority of the players the same problems(first pitch strikes gone by, swinging at everything thats low, thus inducing DPs and groundouts, I hardly see a fly ball to deep outfield). A new bat might help, but dont be surprised and dont start bashing the new guy if we still dont produce runs.
July 2, 200420 yr Imo the offence problem is the Bullpen...they have so much stress on them right now to score so many runs cause of the pen they have gone out of there game plan to make up for it...trust me i have been on teams that we knew our pitching sucked and our pen was worse so we had to score a bunch of runs and trust me it hurts your hitting...

It is me or are we the GD and DP kings of baseball? Also that low zone pitch is being chased by everyone in the line up. Oposing pitchers love to face the Fish.

July 2, 200420 yr Mesa and Fogg from Pittsburgh. Guardado from Seattle. Those two are reasonable trades, what would it take?
July 2, 200420 yr we are teetering very close to losing faith. the team is struggling in all facets. some type of life is needed. i still blame the front office for going on the cheap with the bench and bullpen. all year long its been these two spots that have stood out as being the most worthless facets of our team. any coicidence?

July 2, 200420 yr Mesa and Fogg? You're kdding right? I know I've been harsh on Table lately but Meadows or Torres would be better. Fogg???
July 2, 200420 yr BTW, the players wanting a move made is pathetic. If no move is made, are they going to give up? The front office is in a jam and you cry that you need one more player to make the other 25 play better?
