Talk of a trade doesn't surprise Benitez, Pavano

PITTSBURGH ? Starting tonight at Shea Stadium, the Marlins play their next 14 against National League East opponents. If they fall out of postseason contention, some team members are prepared for the possibility of finishing the season elsewhere.

Neither Carl Pavano nor Armando Benitez, both free agents at season's end, would be shocked if the Marlins traded them before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. With a dearth of pitchers on the market, the Marlins could likely name their price for either.

"If that's the case, I think that's a smart move by them," Pavano said. "They can get guys that can help them in the future. Otherwise, they're just going to end up getting no one."

Considering Freddy Garcia just signed a three-year, $27 million deal with the White Sox, Pavano could probably command four years for $30 million. Benitez? Using Keith Foulke's four-year, $20.75 million contract as a barometer, Benitez could secure around $6 million a season for the next three.

Though he's not eligible for free agency until after 2005, Brad Penny is a potential trade candidate as well. He could seek more than $8 million through arbitration this offseason.

Marlins General Manager Admin Beinfest would not address potential trade scenarios.

"It wouldn't surprise me," Benitez said. "I feel comfortable here. I feel very good, but if my destiny is to go, what can I do?"

Going now wouldn't preclude Benitez or Pavano from coming back. Last season, the Orioles traded Sidney Ponson to the Giants in a pre-deadline deal, then signed him to a three-year, $22.5 million free-agent contract.

Pavano and Benitez did not rule out returning to the Marlins in 2005 if they are traded.

"I don't think that far ahead," Pavano said. "It's not a big concern of mine. As far as I'm concerned, this team is going to win and we're going to be in the playoffs, but from a business standpoint, [a trade] could work to their advantage."

Jeez, no moves I could understand, but this would really be a killer to team momentum, and it sure as hell would kill our chances to re-sign Pavano. I know, I know, Ponson was traded and came back to the O's, but Pavano is the premier young F.A. pitcher available and if he were to be traded it would give the team that acquires him 2 months + of negotiation time. :(

Their not gonna be sellers after they go 11-4 in this next stretch...It will be the SIllies raising the White Flag.

yeah...the implication there is that he's not signing with us....

I got bashed in the game thread for saying if things continue like this that these guys will be traded yesterday. Well I have no doubt that things are going to improve, but if more than 6 or 7 out I would not hesitate at all because Marlins could probably get some pretty good prospects in return. Lets just hope it doesn't come to that

yeah thats pretty much what i was thinking.

I think he was referring to if the Marlins fall out of the race

But still not very reassuring

Yeah he won't resign with us unless we give him the huge pay raise he deserves which I understand because it will be the only large contract he'll ever get.

If Benitez/Pavano go, then i dont know what to think of our team. *Cough* GARBAGE *Cough*.

They are like our most consistant players....

Hope you are right and we stay in this thing....but loading up on prospects for a run every 6-7 yrs sounds like a plan to me.....afterall we are not the "Bankees" and we have to do it our way....if that means getting a shot 1x every 7yrs, that is better than some teams get (like the Cubbies, or RSOX).

If we can not sign Pavano or Penny or both, then we should see what we can do on the market for them. If we decide we are not in this, Benitez is a luxury that could net some serious prospects.

GO FISH !!!

A couple more days of losing and we'll be sellers. Right now, we're teetering a fine line between buyers and sellers, and the next couple of days will decide which side of the line we fall on.

Err, the Red Sox are in the playoffs pretty much every year recently.

And yeah, it's nice when you have one shot every 6 years and that shot wins you a World Series. But let's be honest.....we aren't going to be perfect in the playoffs forever. We can't afford to strip down and build from scratch for a World Series every 6 years, because it isn't going to happen. Also, how are we supposed to build a fan base when the team and FO don't care 5 of every 6 times out of the gate?

Prospects don't have to have a five year incubation period - look at Giles for Bay & Perez - Pirates cash in right away on that one.

If (God forbid) we become sellers, we should expect ML ready talent for 2005.

Took the words right out of my mouth. As a fan, I'd rather see the Marlins do nothing, or if they can "name their price" for Pavano or Benitez, trade Pavano to the Rangers for Teixeira. That's totally a win-win for both teams.

When will the Pavano talk end? Stop your stupid fantasies Red Sox fans. You're not getting him.

"Teams recognize we're 1 1/2 games out of first," Beinfest said. "I think generally in baseball, if you're in a race, you generally aren't talking about front-line guys."

We need to start facing the reality that Pavano isn't going to be here next year. He's going to command probably 8 million plus a year, no way we can pay that. You can almost bet the farm that either Penny or Pavano will be gone next year. My guess is that we end having to deal Pavano this month and we could even end up having to move Penny in the offseason too. No way we can afford to keep our rotation in tact next year.

"generally" being a key word...and I don't think anyone is saying we are sellers...yet. But if this nosedive continues you can put money in the bank that we will be unloading some significant players come July 31st.

It doesn't sound like Pavano believes he'll be back next year. It may be time to call up Texas and see if they'd take Pavano for Teixeira. We'd still have enough pitching (assuming Beckett comes back) to take over the NL East if Teixeira ignites our offense. :thumbup

We should get Tex anyway, trade Penny for him at the end of the year. Penny is going to see his salary rise WAY too much.

Tex would be beautiful....he would sure up the 1b and be able to platoon with Choi....
