July 21, 200422 yr You shouldn't pass the chance to get a top 5 catcher, because the talent drop off after that is greater than any other position. But take a second to consider the Marlins other needs: 4th outfielder, lefty power, pinch-hitter. Acquiring Finley (or Mackowiak, Stairs, dozens other lefty OFers) is what the front office should do, not catcher.

July 21, 200422 yr On Sportscenter, they said that the Marlins are the front runners for Finley right now. If I had to decide I would rather have Beltran instead of Finley, but I will be happy with Finley.

July 21, 200422 yr Well, he did bat 1.000 last year in the clutch, hit a thousand HRs in the second half and put to rest those rumors of living on a reputation of an overrated arm by throwing out baserunners 2,3,4 times a night. And if you recall was flat out horrible in April and awesome in the September Wild Card race, so you could say the Marlins were an one man team last year. Oh yeah, and Encarnacion, who was a top rightfielder, and Derrek Lee, who struck out less than Pudge, and the always solid and poised Braden Looper closing games down the stretch. They helped too, I slightly remember a bullpen of Urbna, Helling, Looper and Fox being one of the league's best; and that Cabrera kid playing gold glove defense in left. I don't know about the rest. They kind of sucked. Bunch of AAA guys and journeymen riding on the coat tails of Pudge and Enc.

This is great to hear, because the longer we wait for another outfielder the deeper we'll get. Now, like someone else said, this could potentially enable Choi to bat second. Altough his OBP is .400+, I can't exactly say I'd want him there for the high K's, which obviously means lack of contact to move the runners (Pierre) over. 466882[/snapback] I dont get this...why do we need him....our outfield is crowded enough and Cordero is eventually coming back to back up 1b...what do we do with Conine? July 21, 200422 yr We have 4 outfielders. One can barely play the field, another is strugglign at the plate and the other has played every inning this year. Depth at that position is an issue. And how acquring Kendall help the bench that has been unproductive all year? If Kendall comes here you have to send one or two average to above-average bats (Treanor, Willingham) back to the minors.
July 21, 200422 yr I hear you guys talking about moving steve finley, i wouldnt. my thinking is to have the best possible player (defensively) at each position and since finley is a really good CF i have no problem moving JP to LF. the clincher for me is JP's below average arm, so really that would settle our need for an extra outfielder. and sorry to Niner but his time as a everyday player is up, he can platoon with choi at first. so the line up would look something like this. 1. Juan Pierre 2. Luis Castillo 3. Steve Finley 4. Mike Lowell 5. Miguel Cabrera 6. Hee Seop Choi/ Jeff Conine 7. Alex Gonzalez 8. Redmond/Willingham/Traenor 9. (Pitcher) my opinion you could switch 3-4-5 hitters to any combo you like just by looking at the team were facing for the series. favorable match-ups, etc.
July 21, 200422 yr Sure we had a better bull pen last year, but im talking about the fact that other teams were afraid to run on us. They were so scared that they didn't some times. Now, we couldn't throw out a sponge. We need someone back there with a cannon.... I keep bringing it up because its something to not be forgotton. You guys can't just forget about him.
July 21, 200422 yr IMO Finley would be the perfect fit for this team. We could platoon him and Conine in left because Finley crushes righties while Conine crushes lefties, and if Choi struggles against lefties we have guys like Willingham and Cordero (Who could be back within 2 weeks) who can play 1st against lefthanded pitching.
July 21, 200422 yr The sooner we stop depending on fringe players like Cordero/Willingham/Treanor and get some real talent in here the better. And for the record as individuals they are all fine people no doubt and will/have tried their best but we can do better. Josh is a nice boy no doubt but let's send his butt back where it belongs and bring guys like Finley so we can finally have a MLB caliber rightfielder, move Cabs back to left and platoon Conine with Choi and Finley. JP can't play left, he doesn't have the arm to throw runners out at home.

We'll have to put a rocker out in LF. 468046[/snapback] There's only about $3 million left on Finley's contract, and we could probably get Arizona to eat some of that. Finley's weakness has always been left-handed pitching, and we would have the opportunity to eliminate that weakness by platooning him with a player who has hit lefthanded pitching very well in his career. It only makes sense. It would strengthen our bench while giving us that left-handed power bat that we could insert between Cabrera and Lowell.
