July 31, 200421 yr I thought it was a good deal, I haven't liked Penny's performances lately. We managed to make additions to all of the areas that we wanted with one trade (left field, catcher, setup-man). Lo Duca and Encarnacion/Walker will help our offense out greatly. I didn't want to lose Bill Murphy, but oh well. My guess is that we will try and get a 5th starter from somewhere.

They had the money available to offer them arbitration and avoid free agency. So would any team that traded for Penny. With Hampton's contract coming off the books in 2006 we wouldn't be in nearly as desperate of a situation as we were last year. I did like the idea of dangling Penny around given the lack of quality pitchers on the market right now. But if the best we could get was LoDuca (free agent this winter, and known for his second half struggles), Encarnacion (the worst starting NL RFer offensively this year and last year) and 30 innings of good relief pitching; plus giving up Choi and Murphy then we should have waited.

The future is now, or more like was 5 years ago. Everyone (myself included) seems to have had this idea that Mota was some young, hot, up and coming Dotel type setup/closer. What happened? Is he Dominican and aged five years or something?

Mota is a good pen guy LoDuca is O YEA an all-star and Juan E. is pretty good. You upgrade at catcher Connie can play first now and Juan E. in left. So tell me why you don't like this trade?
