Flag Man
I have a feeling our team is going to really rally (emotionally) in support of Lo Duca's bitter homecoming. This could really be a turning point for us.
QuickGold
Pavano's career stats versus LA: 2.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 4 W (52.2 IP) Yahoo! Sports Game Preview Jeff Weaver was hoping to get his career back on track with the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. He's finally starting to do it. Weaver looks to win his fourth straight start as the Dodgers open a three-game series with the Florida Marlins at Dodger Stadium in the first meeting between the teams since their blockbuster deal prior to the trade deadline. Weaver allowed just one run and four hits in eight innings of Wednesday's 11-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The victory gave Weaver a .500 record for the first time since he was 1-1 on April 18, and a 1.57 ERA over his last three starts. The Dodgers have scored 31 runs in the last three games Weaver has started. ``Weaver was terrific,'' Los Angeles manager Jim Tracy said. ``He's pretty much been that way the entire season. When he gets run support, he turns it up a notch higher.'' Weaver was traded from Detroit to the New York Yankees in the middle of the 2002 season, when he was considered one of the most promising young starters in baseball. However, he was seen largely as a disappointment in New York, where he went 7-9 with a 5.99 ERA last season in 32 appearances, including 24 starts. Weaver didn't fare much better earlier this season. He started the year 1-4 and had an ERA of at least 4.00 through the end of July. ``I want to say that game at Houston (a 7-5 win on July 20) opened my eyes to the benefits of backing off, especially early in games,'' said Weaver, who has allowed two runs or fewer in his last four starts. ``It gets my sinker to work more effectively. Getting early outs is big, too, but dropping from 92 (mph) to 87-88 allows the ball to move, which has been a key to the run here.'' The Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 8-5 on Sunday, rallying from a two-run, eighth-inning deficit. Adrian Beltre and Shawn Green homered for the Dodgers, who took the lead on Steve Finley's RBI single in the eighth. ``Until that game is over, we're not thinking we're going to lose the game,'' said Finley. The Marlins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 in 10 innings on Sunday. Luis Castillo tied the score with a ninth-inning single, and Damion Easley hit a two-run, pinch-hit double in the 10th for Florida, which also got a homer from Miguel Cabrera. The victory moved Florida, which is 4 1/2 games back in the NL wild-card race, back to .500 for the first time since last Sunday. ``We're still in this thing,'' Florida manager Jack McKeon said. The Marlins traded pitcher Brad Penny, infielder Hee-Seop Choi and minor league pitching prospect Bill Murphy to the Dodgers for catcher Paul Lo Duca, reliever Guillermo Mota and outfielder Juan Encarnacion on July 30. Penny was placed on the disabled list Sunday with a strained right bicep, and Choi is hitting just 5-for-24 (.208) since joining the Dodgers. Lo Duca is hitting 18-for-42 (.429) since joining the Marlins, while Mota has allowed just one earned run in seven innings for Florida. ``It hasn't really hit me yet,'' said Lo Duca, who spent all of his career with the Dodgers. ``I've never been to the visitor's clubhouse there (at Dodger Stadium).'' The Marlins are 6-7 since the deal, while the Dodgers are 9-5. STANDINGS (through Aug. 14): Marlins - 3rd place, 9 GB, NL East. Dodgers - 1st place, NL West. MARLINS PROBABLE STARTER: Carl Pavano (12-5, 3.11 ERA). Pavano allowed just one run and six hits in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, snapping a three-start winning streak. The right-hander has won nine of his last 12 decisions. He is 4-1 with a 2.39 ERA in nine career appearances, including eight starts, against the Dodgers -- his second-best ERA against any NL team. DODGERS PROBABLE STARTER: Weaver (10-10, 3.78 ERA). Weaver is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two career starts against the Marlins. He allowed a game-winning 12th-inning homer to Florida's Alex Gonzalez in Game 4 of last year's World Series. It was the first of three straight wins for the Marlins as they took beat the Yankees in six games. OFFENSIVE LEADERS: Marlins - Cabrera, .310 avg., 24 HRs, 81 RBIs and 77 runs; Juan Pierre, 27 SBs. Dodgers - Beltre, .322 avg., 33 HRs, 80 RBIs and 73 runs; Cesar Izturis, 18 SBs. SEASON SERIES: Dodgers, 2-1. STREAKS AND NOTES: Marlins - OF Pierre snapped an 0-for-18 slide with a one-out RBI triple in the ninth Sunday. ... RHP Armando Benitez earned his 34th save in 37 chances Sunday. ... INF Easley was 1-for-40 (.043) career as a pinch-hitter before his clutch hit Sunday. Dodgers - Los Angeles purchased the contract of LHP Mike Venafro from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill RHP Penny's roster spot. ... RHP Hideo Nomo, on the DL since July 1 with rotator cuff weakness, will make his first rehab start Monday night for Las Vegas. ... 3B Beltre's homer was his 33rd of the season, breaking Pedro Guerrero's team record for most by a third baseman. ... OF Bradley left Sunday's game in the eighth after he tweaked a hamstring. ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Marlins - 27-31 on the road; Dodgers - 36-21 at home. INJURIES: Marlins - C Ramon Castro (toe), 60-day DL; INF Wil Cordero (knee), 60-day DL; RHP Chad Fox (elbow), 60-day DL; RHP Tim Spooneybarger (elbow), 60-day DL. Dodgers - RHP Edwin Jackson (forearm), 15-day DL; RHP Nomo (shoulder), 15-day DL; RHP Paul Shuey (thumb), 15-day DL; RHP Penny (bicep), 15-day DL; C Todd Hundley (back), 60-day DL; OF Bradley (hamstring), day-to-day.
