December 22, 200421 yr Dec. 22 - The Marlins are prepared to intensify their efforts to sign Eric Milton, the Palm Beach Post reports. He would join Al Leiter and Dontrelle Willis and give Florida's rotation three left-handers. However, if Milton is too expensive for the Marlins, he may go to the Angels, Indians or Dodgers. The market for Milton changed dramatically with Oakland's trade of Mark Mulder to St. Louis and Boston's signing of Matt Clement. Both the Cardinals and Red Sox had expressed interest in Milton, who reportedly is looking for a three-year deal for around $24 million. Dec. 22 - The Marlins waited until Monday, the deadline for teams to offer contracts to unsigned players, to contact Matt Perisho's agent about a deal for 2005, The Palm Beach Post reports. Perisho became a free agent after negotiations ended five minutes before the midnight deadline when the left-handed reliever rejected what he called a "really late offer." Perisho made $325,000 in 2004. The Mets and Braves already have expressed interest. Perisho's agent, Scott Shapiro, didn't rule out the possibility of Perisho returning to the Marlins. I hope they dont sign Milton the guy is the most over-rated pitcher out there on the FA market.
December 22, 200421 yr Milton seems to be out of our price range and is asking for way too much. I hope this doesn't happen. As for Perisho, I'd like to see him come back. I doubt he does though.
December 22, 200421 yr The Fish are interested in an overrated eight million dollar fourth starter? Tell me another one. I think the Palm Beach Post has Lisa Guerrero and Eric Dickerson doing their baseball coverage.
December 22, 200421 yr Milton is a very good pitcher. The problem with last season is that he is a flyball pitcher who was playing his home games in a stadium where routine flyballs go over the wall, Citizens Bank Park in Philly. Put him in PPS and he'll be really good. I hope we can sign him, if we can afford him.

He also had fewer strikeouts per 9 on the road than at home.
December 22, 200421 yr If they were prepared to flash this much cash, how come they just didn't offer it to Perez and have been done with it already?
December 22, 200421 yr If they were prepared to flash this much cash, how come they just didn't offer it to Perez and have been done with it already? 640791 Exactly.. I don't get the hype for Milton when there are guys like Perez out there.
December 22, 200421 yr Or how about using that 8 million to go after a hitter. 640800 Pitching>Hitting
December 22, 200421 yr Hopping on the 'we can do better dollar per dollar than Milton' The guy is overhyped and no where close to getting 8 million a season.
December 22, 200421 yr I think the thinking on this one is that he's valuable to us if he comes off of his demands. As it stands, he's only got a 3/$21 million offer from the Yankees, so he's not getting $8 mil a season anywhere.
December 22, 200421 yr IN BEINFEST I TRUST! 640762 I really want to trust him but this lack of movement is such a killer.

December 22, 200421 yr Seeing as the options out there are getting thinner and thinner, I'll take Milton
December 23, 200421 yr 8 million per year is ridiculous for Eric Milton. If we shell out 8 million per year for this guy but won't fork over an extra couple bucks for Perisho to stick around.....
December 23, 200421 yr I think we need to forget about Odalis.. He is most likley going to be a Mariner or Nat.
December 23, 200421 yr Odalis or not, there are better ways to spend 8 million dollars than Eric Milton. Hell give me the money I'll do better.
December 23, 200421 yr If we give ANY pitcher $8 Million a season, his name better be A.J. Milton is just as good a pitcher as Odalis Perez, but neither are worth that kind of cash. What I don't understand is why we're so focused on landing Milton or Perez when we have plenty of talent already in the rotation. The focus should be on right field, and the player being offered the big money should be named Magglio.
December 23, 200421 yr If we give ANY pitcher $8 Million a season, his name better be A.J. 641052 Amen to that. What kind of message would it send to A.J if the Marlins end up signing a pitcher, who is obviously below him talent wise, to a long term deal.

If AJ leaves, you need 2 starting pitchers, and I guess they figure Milton/Perez will be one, and then a sub $1m pitcher to round it out.

My problem is, at 3 years $24 M, why not just sign Clement (3/$25M)? Has more upside (eventhough the Red Sux signed him...hate that team...).
