January 30, 200521 yr A few things: 1) He wouldn't have praised the Cardinals had the Fish not gotten Delgado. He would probably have instead written an article about how poor a job Loria did in trying to recruit Delgado. It's obvious he wrote this article because he wanted to take another stab at the Marlins. It's getting old, but IF it's well-written and argued you cannot complain. 2) It's a crappy article. He makes it seem that the Cardinals team from last year is going to enter the season BETTER than last year's team. They lost Edgar Renteria, a Gold Glove and the best hitting shortstop in the NL. Secondly, this is a team that won 20 MORE GAMES in 2004 than they did in 2003, if the right pieces are subtracted or the right players degress a team's success can fluctuate substantially. The 2004 Cardinals actually had an EW of 100. Why did this team do so much better in 2004? 1. Career years from two of their three best hitters: Edmonds and Rolen. 2. A huge contribution from often-injured Admin Walker 3. Career years from Marquis, Carpenter and Suppan: 3/5 of their rotation 4. A great pen: Steve Kline, King, Tavarez, Calero, and Izzy. What can we logically expect from this team in 2005? 1. A worse offense. No Renteria. No Womack. A drop-off from Rolen and Edmonds with their respect to their career years last year is a safe and probable prediction. A huge drop in production from Walker who had a .953 OPS for the Cardinals and was healthy and consistent for the time he spent with them. A guy that is 38, has serious injury concerns, missed about 3 months worth of play last season isn't a safe bet to post a .953 OPS for the entire season. Sanders is going to be 37 and his production is declining as expected with his age and he himself is also an injury concern. The ONLY way this offense improves is at the Catcher position, and it won't come close to closing the gap. 2. A staff that won't be any better than last year, probably worse. Even DESPITE his Cy Young contending season, Carpenter's career ERA is 4.60 ERA. That was his first season with the Cards and people might credit Matheny's game calling to his success but even if that is the case, Matheny is no longer with the team, so there goes that argument. Assume Mulder replicates Carpenter's stats from last season and Carpenter performs better than his career average and replicates Woody Williams' stats who also left and everything else stay as is, there is NO improvement in the rotation. Now onto to Suppan and Marquis... Jason Marquis had an outrageously high WHIP for his ERA, which means one of two things: 1) He isn't nearly as good as his ERA suggests he is 2) He is as good as his ERA suggest because he has an incredibly talented defensive infield that will bail him out when he allows too many baserunners It doesn't matter really, their defensive infield is going to go from being a big strength to a weakness after just one season, so he is not a safe bet to replicate his success unless he improves as a pitcher. Suppan too had a career year, and also too had a high WHIP... The only player that really stands a chance to do better or no worse is Matt Morris, but he's a big question mark because his performance has been getting worse since 2001. 3. The pen will be significantly worse. They lost their best relief pitcher in Kline. The mediocre Tavarez had a 2.38 ERA last year despite having a career ERA of 4.39. They lost Calero, who was going to be perhaps the best relief pitcher for them this year and posted a 2.78 ERA last year with a sick .82 WHIP and 9.33 K/9 4. Their D will be much worse. Losing Renteria, Matheny, and Womack that infield defense only has one good defensive player. Their corner OFers are two aging injury prone players. Even if people want to think that their pitching was for real last season, because of the infield defense and because of Matheny's game calling...that won't be the case this year because their infield defense will be much worse and Matheny is gone. It's very possible that team is quite a few games worse than last year's 100 Expected Win team. Even if it's just 6 or 8 games worse, the Marlins with the added bullpen depth and the latter end of the year team are 10 games better or so on paper. The Cardinals team will be worse, the Marlins team better why can't the Marlins stand to do as well if not better? LeBatard's article is moronic because it's not analyzed at all. Cote might have just scratch some surface but at the very least he went through some trouble researching before making stupid comments like claiming the Cards are better because they added an Ace without regard to all the pieces they lost and without regard to what one can honestly expect from last year's team that we might or might not expect this time around.

So take a chill pill and quit being so freaking sensitive. 672835[/snapback] While I happen to agree that today's pro/con piece may have fostered more undue criticism than was justified, to suggest that historically the media has been "fair and unbiased" as it comes to the Marlins is naive at best. The Herald has shown incredible unfairness and maliciousness in their reporting of the Fish for more years than I can count and only now are they beginning to treat the franchise with even a modicum of the respect they deserve. No one is suggesting (at least not me) that the local papers become cheerleaders or ignore their journalistic obligations, but to use reporters to editorialize negatively in what should have been unbiased news coverage on a regular basis is wholly unacceptable and journalistically corrupt. Columnists like LeBatard (who I believe has actually led the change at the Herald although I know others will disagree) and Berardino made a living for years bad-mouthing the Fish. Beradino won't ever change, his grudge is personal and infantile. But when guys like Baxter and Spencer and Rodrigues start going beyond their job description and start opining, without an editor pulling them back to focus on their reporting task, that deserves to be criticized. The Herald was the worst, encouraging an environment in which a columnist felt safe, for example, to pen the observation that a sign reading "Loria = MVP", held up by a fan the night the Marlins secured their wildcard berth in 2003 (and prominently displayed on the front page of the next day's Herald sports section) should be translated to mean "Loria = Most Vile Parasite" was not only in bad taste, it showed the level of vulgarity the Herald (through their editor Richard Bush) was willing to stoop to in order to vilify the franchise. So if some people are still hyper-sensitive they have every right to do so.

January 30, 200521 yr There's nothing wrong with analysis, reportage or opinion. Each has it's place in newspapering. And I happen to agree that newspapers and other media outlets would be quite boring if all they did was "rah rah crap" (to use your well-turned phrase). But with the exception of a few short weeks when the local media had no choice but to be dragged kicking and screaming onto the Marlins bandwagon, coverage has been neither analytical nor objective. It's been downright negative. If we had more columns like today's over the past three years I doubt this one would have had the impact it's had here. Unfortunately, more often than not, the "pro" portion has been sadly non-existent. If someone keeps walking by and hitting you with a stick, no one should be surprised if you put up your dukes and punch the guy in the mouth. At some point you're going to say "enough is enough". Marlins fans have had enough. They want to see the pendulum swing the other way, even if that means it swings too far in the other direction.

After all, as I pointed out in an earlier post, he suggests the Marlins may very well be the second-best team in the National League. That's a long road for him to travel from where he was (regardng the Fish) two years ago.
January 31, 200521 yr I think the Cards will end up with more wins than the Marlins, but Marlins would beat them in a series. They lose Renteria, but they will have Walker for the full year. The only had him for 2 months and he hit 13 homers for them. Mulder is better than williams They should still probably win like 95 games. Their pitching is a little suspect, becaue the eras of their pitchers are all basically in the 4's. But they do have the best offense in the NL.
