February 1, 200521 yr i would've given both of these guys a chance if i was the marlins, Hideo Nomo and Jeff Nelson, they both signed minor league contracts i think we shouldve tried the same, who knows maybe Nomo would perform like the years before and wouldve helped us as our 6th or even 5th starter. also Nelson is a good reliever i mean it would not have hurt us to sign them to minor league contracts and invites to ST. If they didnt workout then you just let them go but imagine they both wouldve. they could've helped us. I know they are both old but i wouldve given them a chance. with all that said it is to late now cause they both signed, but just wanted to know if u guys wouldve done it?

I'm sure these guys had a number of options to consider. Perhaps Nomo felt Tampa was the best spot for him to make it back to the bigs. Their rotation is certainly less formidable than the Marlins. We can't sign everybody. :mischief2
February 1, 200521 yr yes-Nomo yes-Nelson both these guys are past there hey day but are worth the risk especially nelson,This guy can come in and just kill the 8th inn. for you...
February 1, 200521 yr I guess I'm in the minority but I wouldn't have offered either a minor league contract. Nomo was just awful last season and has steadily declined over the past few years. He's definitely not worth a spot on the 40 man roster and would just take up space in Albuquerque. Nelson is Nelson. Seems to me he's no better than a number of guys we already have.
February 1, 200521 yr A minor-league contract is a minor-league contract. What is it going to cost you to give two guys that do have some skills to try and come in and do something? Nomo is a better 6th starter than anyone we have. Nelson has fantastic stuff and is still pretty darn good, and could help a lot of teams for the league minimum.
February 1, 200521 yr Remmeber how well the marlins did when we picked up lenny harris and chad fox in 03 when no one else wanted them
February 1, 200521 yr I was really hoping we gave Nomo a shot... He'd be a great 6th starter plus LoDuca has caught him for the last however many years

There is a reason why the Devil Rays were the team that picked him up.
February 1, 200521 yr Nah. Maybe if either were lefthanded... Kinda weak in that department. The current Albuquerque pitching staff is stocked full of good talent. Frank Castillo, Nate Bump, Justin Wayne and Trevor Hutchinson starting. Ben Howard, Chad Bentz, Randy Messenger, Peter Bauer, Mike Neu and Mike McNutt in the 'pen. They may not overturn the effects of Albuquerque's high elevation and hot southwest temperatures, but it's a solid set of reserves.
