Looks like Perisho had a rough off-season...might have contributed to his weight gain...he is lucky to be alive. Perfect example of why one shouldn't jump to conclusions and make disparaging remarks about anyone.

 

I'm hoping Perisho gets in shape and has a terrific year...

 

Crash puts camp into perspective

 

After a February car accident, Matt Perisho discovered there are bigger issues than the state of the bullpen.

JUPITER - The car crash was so violent that it left Marlins pitcher Matt Perisho lying against his side, his wife and 9-year-old daughter hanging from their seat belts, and his 6-year-old son nowhere to be seen.

 

It rendered the two occupants in another car injured and unconscious. It propelled the cap Perisho wore on opening day last season -- the one his son regarded as his most prized possession -- onto a stretch of Arizona asphalt.

 

More than anything, it left Perisho with a heavy heart.

 

''It was terrible,'' Perisho said, ``and it still is terrible.''

 

Everyone survived the late-night crash Feb. 4 in Tempe, and Perisho is taking part in spring training despite lingering soreness in his back and morning headaches.

 

LINGERING PAINS

 

But it also has left mental and physical scars the reliever said refuse to go away.

 

The most serious of those injured, according to Tempe Police Department officer Mike Curtis, is an 18-year-old Tucson woman whose neck was broken and remains hospitalized. She was the passenger in the other car.

 

''It's definitely changed the way I go about my day,'' Perisho said. ``My kids are traumatized and have trouble sleeping. They don't want to be left alone anywhere. When I'm driving, I'm scared to death now.''

 

Perisho said he and his family were returning from a dinner with friends when a car cut in front of them while trying to make a turn at an intersection. Perisho, who was driving a Chevrolet Avalanche, was unable to avoid the other car, struck the passenger side and went airborne before slamming into a concrete barrier.

 

''If the barrier wasn't there, we would have dropped onto the freeway,'' Perisho said.

 

The Avalanche landed on its side, and Perisho was pressed against the driver's side door. He looked around and saw his wife and daughter, but not his son, Ryan, who had been seated behind him. Perisho feared the worst, that the boy had been ejected and become trapped beneath the large truck.

 

''My kids are really good about their seat belts, and we never have to ask them to put them on,'' Perisho said. ``But that night, he didn't get it clicked good enough. The impact caused the door to open and he went out.''

 

After Perisho and his wife and daughter climbed out of the truck, passersby told them their son was OK. Ryan had been thrown from the truck, sustaining only minor cuts and bruises.

 

''It was the scariest 30 seconds, or however long it was, to get myself out of that truck to find out where he was,'' Perisho said.

 

But the occupants in the other car weren't as fortunate.

 

Perisho said he went over to the car to check on the occupants. The driver and passenger were hurt and unconscious.

 

''Nobody was moving, nobody's eyes were open, and the car was basically destroyed,'' Perisho said. ``I thought for sure the passenger was dead, without a doubt, the way we hit.''

 

OTHER INJURIES

 

Curtis, the lead investigator in the accident, said the woman, Emily Migneault, sustained a broken neck.

 

''Usually, most folks who have that type of injury don't survive,'' Curtis said. ``She's still in an induced coma.''

 

Curtis said the driver of the car, 20-year-old Michael Wooten of Phoenix, was ticketed for running a red light. Curtis said Perisho was not cited. He said alcohol and drugs weren't involved.

 

Perisho said he is trying to concentrate on spring training, but it has been hard not to think about the accident. Perisho, a left-handed reliever who went 5-3 while appearing in 66 games last season for the Marlins, is among the favorites to land a bullpen spot.

 

''It makes me sad and it [upsets me], because how does the [driver] miss a seven-foot truck in the middle of the intersection,'' Perisho asked. ``I wake up with a headache every day, but the doctor said that would go away by the time the season starts. I went to a spine specialist, and he said I'm just going to be sore, and each day the soreness will get better.''

And the other foot drops to this story. I knew there had to be something to make him gain so much wait. The pain is not helpful in exercising during the offseason.

Scary stuff like that really puts everything into perspective.

I saw this article and was a relieved that everyone in his family is OK.

 

But no, this accident had nothing to do with his weight gain. He didn't gain that extra 40 lbs in the past 2 weeks. No need for anyone to apologize about criticizing his off-season work out regimen.

How do you know that? Someone can overeat due to depression.

You can overeat, but you can't gain 40 poinds in a couple weeks. Maybe 10 or 15, but 40 is ridiculous. Heck, if he had stayed in better shape the accident wouldn't have taken such a physical toll on his body.

Anybody think that certain medicines make you larger? Kids with asthma get pumped with steroids and frequently see large weight gains.

Some medication can slow down your metabolism, make you retain water, etc.

 

If he gained all that weight due to his extremely stressful offseason and everything he had to go through, i've got no problem with that and I wish him the absolute best of luck and hope he does extremely well... but if all that weight gain is just a result of going to McDonalds 5 times a day then we got a problem.

 

No matter what though, it's very good to hear that Perisho and his family are okay.

I don't think Marlins management would stay as quiet as it has if it had been him going to McDonalds 5 times a day.

Considering this accident happened a few weeks before spring training, it's possible that medication may have played a part. Pain killers can cause increased weight gain, as can a few anti-depressants and anxiety drugs. But enough to balloon from his October body frame? There's been atleast 3 months to get his body in shape!

On the one hand, I'm glad to hear he wasn't being lazy as reason for his weight gain but I'm sorry to hear such a tragic story.

I read that this morning over breakfast but never really felt that was the reason he balooned up, especially since that accident just happened.

I feel worse for the people in the other car. The 18 year old girl has a broken neck for Christ's sakes.

Its going to seem wrong to point this out, but you really can't gain all that weight from February 4th until today. These were two individual things.

Its good hes okay. So many people have been through similar cases and have not been as lucky. Its real fortunate hes alive, so many people would have felt it. Gaining 40 pounds in such a short period is ridiculous, but it is possible. Theres so much sad crap going on everywhere.
