Spooneybarger a month away

Featured Replies

From the Palm Beach Post:

Spooneybarger on the mound: Reliever Tim Spooneybarger will pitch in a game for the fourth time today, scheduled to go two innings at Jupiter. Spooneybarger is throwing all his pitches and is up to about 35 an outing. He is about a month from returning to the Marlins.

Anyone's guess who will get sent down when he's ready? I say Bump.

It'll be great to see him on the mound again. And I'd have to agree that Bump could use the step down for awhile in order to make room for Spooney.

The last part of the piece was equally important...

"I'm probably more frustrated now than I've ever been because I know how close I am,'' he said. "Everything is fine. I've just got to get my velocity back.''

No need to rush the guy.

Gonna have a month to decide that.

It's a good thing our bullpen has done well. It's allowed Spooneybarger to take his time.

I wouldn't be surprised if he starts off in Double or Triple A. Assuming Bump is sent down when Reidling is healthy...who else could be sent down? I don't expect Spooney to be back anytime soon. He will provide some nice depth as the season progresses.

In no way should Spooney's return be rushed.

If he doesn't make it back until the All-Star break but he comes back at 100%, the team will be better off. Assuming Riedling comes in and contributes and Mecir and Jones continue to do their thing as effectively as they have, let Spooney work out the kinks for a few months and the FO can make their move then.

Remember when AJ came back from his Tommy John he still rough around the edges. As someone mentioned above, let Spooneybarger do some extended AA/AAA time so that whn he comes back he can make a significant contribution in the last half of the season.

By then some team might come sniffing around for one of our middle relievers and the Marlins could add a piece to its bench or high minors.

Exactly :thumbup

Bump will definetely be the first to be sent down. But for reidling most likely. I also doubt that the marlins would trade away one of their pen arms to allow room for spooney. Spooney coming off tommy john is no guarantee to perform well, so it wouldnt be smart to trade away another bullpen arm.

It would depend on the package that was being offered and the status of our other middle relievers and AAA/AA reserves (Castillo, Howard, Messenger, Bentz, Carolina Quintet).

I actually liked les walrond a lot as well. But either way I think our front office and mckeon arent that willing to lose major league caliber pitching talent because of what happened with our pen last year. Our experiment with callups and send downs out of the minors was a failure last season. Although castillo is a veteran and I would love to see messenger get a shot, I dont think a trade like that will happen to open up room for spooney.

Perisho and Bump should go.

Do we really need Perisho? We have mecir and the other right handers can handle lefties well enough.

LOOGYs (Lefthanded One Out GuYs) are nice to have around, but when your guy can't get a righty out it's a hassle. You have to carry around a guy, keep him fresh, time his warm-ups right just for a platoon advantage. All that work for 1 maybe 2 batters. And it all goes to waste if the opposing manager points down the bench for an easily available righthander. Yet for some reason managers are obsessed with the guys. Most teams have two of them.
