BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. - The Atlantic Seaboard and the Gulf Coast could be in for another bad hurricane season, one of the government's top forecasters said Monday.

Conrad C. Lautenbacher Jr., head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, predicted 12 to 15 tropical storms, seven to nine of them becoming hurricanes, and three to five of those major hurricanes, with winds of at least 111 mph.

"We can't predict this far in advance how many will strike land," he said. But given the active season, "be prepared for two or three of these to make landfall."

On average, the United States is hit by two major hurricanes every three years.

Last year, there were 15 tropical storms, with nine of them hurricanes ? six of them major. Florida got hit by an unprecedented four hurricanes.

Lautenbacher said the 2005 forecast was based on a large number of factors, including air pressure, winds and surface temperature.

Forecasters at Colorado State University have also predicted a significantly above-average Atlantic hurricane season. In April, William Gray and his team said they expect 13 named storms, including seven hurricanes, three of them major.

The hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

Our impact glass can only withstand about 115 :( Not good... Hopefully we dont get the eye wall like we did the last 2 hurricanes

Can't possibly by any worse than last year, right?

I assume you are referring worse to the MArlins . . . .

Yes. Most of the storms hitted north, so if they hit South or threaten the South the Marlins situation could be worse

It seems like they predict a bad hurricane season every year so when they're right the can say "Told you so" and when they're wrong they say "better safe than sorry".

They predict doom and gloom every year. Don't worry about it.

Hurricane coverage around here has to border on threatening otherwise no one would pay attention. Even as it is people don't do anything until the day before the storm is meant to hit. Could you imaginve if the media went from being sensationalist to realistic or apathetic, half of South Florida would be on the beach for the storm...

pay attention to rain leading up to hurricane season.

last year we had a dry month before hurricane season, and in the past that has also meant bad hurricane seasons

Not surprising. We have been moving back into a period of increased activity. Expect to see these types of predictions for the next 20 years or so.

hitted

Anyway:

Go Canes

Or if you rather:

Go Storm

Also Tulsa and Carolina fans, find your own pictures.

15 days until the Hurricane Forum is reopened! :plain

Anyways, they have to overhype it. Or you would have a situation pre-Andrew when nobody gave a flip about the storm and we got owned.

People cared. Its like what happend last year with Charley. Andrew was suppose to directly hit Broward/Palm Beach. But as we know it hit pretty far south, far enough south that people in Palm Beach barely got rain storms. Like last year with Charely, people due south of Tampa didn't worry too much and they paid for that.

This team has been around for 13 seasons and has only been affected by hurricanes in one of those years (that I can recall)...so though it could definitely happen again, I wouldn't plan on it ruining the Fish's schedule every year...

I can assure you people cared here. We were told it was going to hit somewhere on the Cape or Punta Gorda a week before and that forecast changed 2 days before. However people here were worried and prepared.
