A public relations firm representing Betcris.com, a sports book casino and poker room, distributed a news release Friday indicating the company's willingness to bridge the Marlins' stadium funding gap by offering a lucrative contract for naming rights to the proposed new ballpark.

Betcris.com might contact Major League Baseball to arrange a meeting.

The Marlins declined comment.

MLB president Robert DuPuy indicated in a May 12 letter to local politicians that the stadium project needs an additional $45 million in funding, including $15 million in land acquisition near the Orange Bowl.

But what if this is the only option? I mean I'm sure it won't be and the City, County and Team could strike up another partnership with some other company to close the gap, but what if we see nothing? Does the team take a chance and allow these guys to get naming rights to the new stadium just for the final $30 million?

Web site makes offer: Betcris.com, a gambling Web site, issued a press release that states it has offered to pay as much as $420 million for the naming rights to a new baseball stadium in Miami.

A Marlins spokesman said the team would have no comment on the proposal.

:o

That has to be a typo on PBP's part or something - otherwise the Marlins would be nuts not to consider it.

Well hot damn. That's a crapton of money for naming rights - let's hope the Fish are receptive and MLB is ok with a sportsbook naming a stadium.

Makes you wonder what else would/could be involved, $420 million seems like alot just for naming rights.

Underground casino? I guess in our case it'd be underwater.

Naming rights are worth way more than $30 million. The AAA got $40 million 5 years ago, and the American Airlines Center in Dallas got $60 million just a few years ago.

They offered up to $420 million .. so yep, looks worth more than $30 million

I dont think they are offering $420 million for naming rights, regardless of what the PBP says. They are offering to bridge the funding gap. Which at this point is around $30 - $45 million. I still contend they could get more for naming rights, plus naming rights was supposed to go to the team as extra revenue not as financing for the stadium.

Having it named after a gambling institution would be killer. I'd frickin' love it. Superparlay Sundays at the Bet? AWESOME.

That's the biggest problem I see with this - the naming rights were supposed to be a revenue stream for the team (and I might be wrong about this, but a part of the $192 mil in rent payments they were to give), and by putting the naming rights money into the stadium the Marlins would essentially be increasing their contribution, which they've said they won't do.
