Marlins ideally want new stadium in downtown Miami

Associated Press

MIAMI -- With their hopes for a new retractable-roof stadium still in limbo, the Florida Marlins are continuing to "review all options," team president David Samson said Thursday.

Samson did not say what any alternative options may include, nor would he say if the team's hope of being in a new facility in time for the 2008 season was still feasible. The Marlins want a 38,000-seat ballpark to be built adjacent to the Orange Bowl in downtown Miami.

Yet the plan has been stalled by a gap in funding. The team, the city and Miami-Dade County have pledged $390 million toward the construction of a new stadium; that leaves a gap of up to $45 million.

"He's going to review all options and then have a comment," Samson said, referring to Marlins' owner Jeffrey Loria. "And I'm still doing that with him. I hope to have news soon."

The team, city and county did not meet a June 9 deadline imposed by Major League Baseball, which sought a detailed update on funding plans for the proposed ballpark. But Samson said he is in regular contact with the office of MLB chief operating officer Bob DuPuy, who requested the status report.

"There's continuing dialogue at all times," Samson said after the Marlins announced the signing of three first-round draft picks at Dolphins Stadium, the team's home park since its 1993 inaugural season. "Baseball's very interested in what's happening here because we're one of 30 franchises and they keep track of that."

State lawmakers have turned down four separate funding requests from the Marlins in recent years, most recently a bill this year that would have granted the team a 30-year subsidy and covered the gap in the current construction plan.

Plus, the team's series of one-year leases with Dolphins Stadium, owned by former Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga, will expire after the 2010 season. Late last year, Marlins officials met in Las Vegas with Mayor Oscar Goodman, who wants a new ballpark and a major league franchise for it.

"It's been many years, working very hard at trying to secure a place to play," Samson said. "As you know, we can't stay at Dolphins Stadium. There is no lease that allows us to stay here. So therefore, we have to start planning and going through all our options."

Get a new stadium or move. Simple as that.

dead wrong. Cape, do the explaining

There are many different things Loria can do. From putting up the money himself to signing a better lease at Dolphins Stadium if one is so offered. Loria could also bring in a new partner or seek new capital from another source.

How soon?

Had I known that I would have posted it. I have sent yet another inquiry to the Marlins seeking their comment.

I think location is a huge liability like the thread started by musk.I just have feeling this stadium will be another Miami Arena.

It's also easy for me to say to go to the freaking games. Our attendance is embarrassing. That's a whole different can of worms though.

You know nothing about the situation. Have you even been to a game in Opa Locka?

As for attendance...ESPN puts us at 816,322 people through 36 home games. That would be 22,675 per game. That is not too shabby considering all the factors that drag down attendance. The key thing being a lack of the Marlins being able to seel 10-year seat licenses. In the new ballpark that would be 60% of capacity sold. Not too bad.

Can you give me a run down of the excuses, i mean factors?

Can you name a time you visited Dolphins Stadium to watch a Marlins Baseball game in Opa Locka? If you did, then you would see the issues.

This is going to be the statement where he says "Sorry South FLA, this ain't happening" I feel it.

That would be the dumbest thing you could say. Where would he go?

Obviously I haven't been to many games in DS, I try to get to atleast a couple of away games throughout the year.

But seriously, I want to know all the factors. I'm always the one defending the Marlins and their attendance against people in the midwest and on Iowa message boards that are Cubs/White Sox/Cardinals top heavy. So please, inform me on why we are continually at the bottom of attendance. I'd much appreciate it.
