JPMarlin
Deal in the works? Jul 19 - According to the Palm Beach Post, Mike Lowell is expected to be be packaged in an A.J. Burnett trade. A deal, likely with Baltimore, is nearing completion, although a three-way trade between the Marlins, Orioles and Pirates surfaced late Monday. In a straight-up deal with Baltimore, the Marlins would send Burnett, Lowell and Triple-A outfielder Eric Reed to the O's for reliever Jorge Julio, outfielder Admin Bigbie and pitching prospect Hayden Penn. In the three-way deal, the Marlins would acquire pitcher Mark Redman from Pittsburgh -- along with Penn, Julio and Bigbie. In return, the Marlins would send Burnett to Baltimore and Lowell to Pittsburgh. The Pirates then would send first baseman Daryle Ward to Baltimore, and the Orioles also would acquire Reed. The Marlins would be responsible for a large portion of Lowell's contract, which has $21 million remaining through 2007. Any deal with the O's will include Lowell, whose price tag has scared away several teams. The third baseman is in the first year of a three-year deal worth $25.5 million, and the Marlins likely will be responsible for some of the money. The Orioles were figuring out how much of Lowell's contract they can absorb, and their chances of signing Burnett long term. Burnett will be a free agent after the season. The Marlins also spoke with Toronto and the White Sox about a Burnett/Lowell package, but neither team was willing to take Lowell, who said his agent, Seth Levinson, told him "the talks are for real." I like this deal because it will get us a solid starter to take Burnett's spot in the rotation and we would be able to keep Penn in our system...do we want to take on part of Lowell's contract though to get it done? :confused

I don't want to give up Reed! 864711[/snapback] I'd say we'd have to be willing to if we are going to get rid of Lowell's underperforming bat and his financially stifling contract
WildMarlinMan2003
Reed could be a good player but it is a great trade to get Redman too.
SilverBullet
I like this so much more...Redman is a good idea for us...he cant do worse than Leiter did for us... and I'm still banking that Penn is just a pawn and gives us one more key element... So we get a decent hitting outfielder, relief help, a proven starting pitcher with experience, and potentially one more key component that is still a mystery... I'll take it! I LIKE THIS DEAL. but not as much as boston though the one with Arroyo hanley ramirez and trot nixon or millar-doubt it happens though. redman could be a spot starter or a 5th starter. Penn is a guy with great potential. btw THERE IS NOTHIN WRONG WITH Admin BIGBIE i don't get it he's a .280 hitter why wouldn't you want him i'd rather have him than easley. we need a good reliever julio fits that

wanks1212
Here's a blurb from Gammons' column today: What's the deal? The Marlins and Orioles want the A.J. Burnett deal to happen. Peter Angelos just doesn't want to pay more than $10 million of the $18 million Mike Lowell has remaining on his contract, and Florida's goal is to clear Lowell's money, put Miguel Cabrera at third, take the savings and go back into the market and try to make a run. And, oh by the way, firing Jack McKeon isn't part of the plan. The front office feels something has to be done to shake up the team, but replacing McKeon isn't it. If the deal were to go through, Hayden Penn would go to Double-A, Admin Bigbie would platoon with Jeff Conine and Lowell would play first for the Orioles. Then, Florida would try to make another deal or two to strengthen its pitching. In the column, he also writes some good stuff about the A's.
