Peter Gammons 7/25

Just said that the Red Sox have offered Anibal Sanchez, Bronson Arroyo, and possibily a relief pitcher for Burnett and the Marlins haven't called back. He said the Marlins FO is still upset with the Sox management and the current favors to get Burnett are the White Sox enough though they don't have the bets offer on the table. He also said Burnett has said he won't sign a extension with any oter team but the Red Sox. Then the other guy said so Burnett has soem trade leverge.

I can't believe that Beinefest and the front office are this stupid. IMO they are acting like Kids. The Red Sox have the best deal on the table. The deal is likely, Embree, Arroyo, Sanchez for Burnett and possibily Reed. I think Reed is only involved cause the Marlins are not very high on him and they will need to clear a roster spot if they acquire Ambree and Arroyo. IF Gammnons said that Sanxhez is in the offer then im 100% SURE that the Red Sox are offering him to us.

In all fairness, as a BoSox fan myself, how does it make sense for us? We need relievers, since Curt wants to go back to the rotation...

But as a Marlins fan, do it Beinfest!

gammons is highly credible but throughout this whole trade process all he has been doing is reading prosportsdaily.com

ill wait for more concrete news.

Embree is just on waivers because he has been doing so bad. How does this make their deal any better? Just like Kline and Reed from the O's all we are doing is picking up someone else's junk. This makes little sense to us.

Gammons is as reliable as any media guy.

btw, he pounded the table on 03 and claimed that the Lowell deal to the Cubs was inminent

You shouldn't believe anything Gammons says. The guy is as unreliable as they come when it comes to trade specualation.

Embree I said is the reliver likely involved cause of his salary what he and he is on waivers. The Marlins don't make this deal for Embree, they make it for Arroyo and Sanchez. Just like the deal with the O's was basically for Penn, Juli, and Bigbie. Kline was a throw in for salary purposes since we where giving them Lowell. Remember the Red Sox once released Chad Fox cause he wasn't doing so well for them.

I wouldn't say Gammons is reliable but for the Red Sox? this guy is basically part of the Red Sox front office. If anybody knows whats up with the Red Sox is him.

Embree is by all accounts washed up. They've already DFA'd the guy. If hanging were still an acceptable form of retribution in Massachusetts, he'd be dangling from an oak tree in the Fens right now if it were up to most Red Sox fans.

As for Sanchez, the Red Sox have been on a major PR campaign to build awareness and interest in the guy, and for just that reason, one has to be suspicious why they are so quick to jettison the guy if their avowed plan is to cut payroll over the next few years. He's THE GUY they want to get rid of. Beware.

And Arroyo, if you're looking for a guy to replace Brian Moehler might be okay, local kid makes good, all that stuff, but certainly not as a replacement for one of your studs, especially if you have designs on playing October.

And as for Beinfest and the FO being stupid, the comment speaks for itself.

That's just it. Peter Gammons is extremely biased when it comes to anything dealing with the Red Sox. So when he mentions them in anylight with another team I usually take it with a grain of salt.

The Chi Sox deal with Contreras and Marte is still better... Decent starter and a great reliever opposed to a waivers reliever and a good starter. Go with the Chi Sox!

i agree bro. i really think contreras could thrive down here in the environment. i really think things like that make a player perform better. the more comfortable the environment the better. i would much rather have him over Bronson "I Was Voted Off of American Idol" Arroyo.

Contreras is not a part of any deal. It's McCarthy and Marte. Contreras could be thrown in an expanded deal but the chances of that happening are slim.

If the White Sox do end up making a deal for Burnett they will most likely not include Jose Contreras in any trade. He will be kept for depth. If McCarthy (White Sox current #6 starter) were to be traded along with Contreras they would have nobody to backup the rotation if El Duque went down again with another injury.

Most likely Contreras will not be traded.

I do this deal for Sanchez and Arroyo. I don't carre about Embree. Who cares if they rather trade Sanchez over Lester and Papelbon? Look at Sanchez sruff and #. A couple of years ago the Blue Jays demanded Luke Prokopec(spelling) while the Dodgers didn't want to give him up. They prefered to give the Jays Eric Gagne. Jays kept on insisting and well look how that turned out. If we trade Burnett to the White Sox and all we get is Marte and McCarthy im gonna be piss tahts all im saying. Even if they give us Contreras in return(who I like) he will cost us the remaining salary this yera and 6 million next year then he's a free agent. We keep Arroyo for another 2 years including this one I believe and he has pitched in the playoff's and well already. Yes he is no Burnett but I strongly believe he can be a 2004 version of Pavano. As for McCarthy and Sanchez. Sanchez has better stuff, potential, and better # as well.

these deals dont tickle me, keep AJ......and i like the chi sox deal the best anyway, arroyo is over rated

How is Arroyo overrated? if anybody is overrated is Burnett who hasn't proven anything other than he is inconsistent, has a good arm, and makes frequent trips to the DL.

coming from someone who has watched most of arroyos starts this year, he is over rated. He's inconsistent, streaky and doesn't have that good of "stuff". arroyo is no better than a number 4 starter. He doesn't get many strike outs and is always pitching with a 4+ ERA. Oh, and opponents are hitting over .300 against him, .311 this year with a career average of .331. The guy is over rated. He's just not that good

I really dont think the Marlins have much of a choice, since im not sure how willing the White Sox are to make a deal for Burnett knowing he wont sign an extension right now and will test the market. So basically the Marlins have two good deals on the table, Marte/McCarthy and Arroyo/Sanchez. Personally I think a young SP is better than a MR and considering Sanchez has higher potential id go with the Red Sox deal, but McCarthy is closer to being ready. Although I see Sanchez being a better fit because the Marlisn already have lots of young SPs and a guy with potential might be better. BUT either team will probaly ask for a 72 hour window, and Contreras will NOT be part of a deal unless the Marlins add a significant piece also.

You Sox fans have to stop fantasizing about getting AJ. It would be nice for you but it's not happening. Sorry. He's staying right where he is. Hopefully you'll make the Series again, and you can see AJ then.

your setting yourself up for a major letdown if you think Burnett is staying put

here is what he wrote today on espn.com

The Marlins' thinking behind the potential trade of A.J. Burnett and Mike Lowell to Baltimore was to move Miguel Cabrera to third base, to free up most of the $18 million owed Lowell, to improve the bullpen for 2005, to gain a potential starter for 2006 and to take the freed cash and try to buy another starter and/or position player.

It was about trying to take an underachieving team, make some changes and try to win in 2005 and beyond.

Well, that trade never happened. And as the Marlins boarded their plane to fly home from San Francisco Sunday night, they had seemingly righted themselves. After being swept in Philadelphia and losing their opener in Arizona, the Marlins have won four out of five, with Burnett beating the D-Backs and Giants and Josh Beckett coming back off the disabled list to win Saturday. Now the Marlins are back home, only 4? games behind Atlanta and Washington in the NL East and the wild card race.

"There are a lot of very good signs, a lot better than last weekend," Marlins GM Admin Beinfest said. "The last few days we started to play a lot better, the way we're capable of playing."

So now, as Florida hosts the Pirates and Nationals leading up to Sunday's deadline, the question of whether to trade Burnett in the middle of the pennant race is one Beinfest must weigh.

"To begin with, we want to win this year, and for anyone to suggest we're selling out 2005 is mistaken," Beinfest said. "We don't have to trade A.J. If we can make ourselves better in 2005 and for the future, we'll listen."

In the meantime, the White Sox and Red Sox, among others, would love to get Burnett. There have been reports that Chicago would part with reliever Damaso Marte, despite the physical questions concerning Dustin Hermanson, and rookie Brandon McCarthy, who may or may not be ready to step into the Florida rotation.

Boston has dangled Bronson Arroyo, who has one more win than Burnett and has the best ERA of any Red Sox starter, and might be willing to include one of their outstanding pitching prospects, 21-year-old Anibal Sanchez, who spun a three-hit, 11-strikeout gem in his third start for Double-A Portland Friday. Boston's offer might have more upside, but it doesn't address the Marlins' bullpen depth.

Beinfest maintains the bullpen has stabilized with Guillermo Mota healthy and starting to throw well, Todd Jones and Matt Perisho having big years, and Jim Mecir OK in the middle. And now, in the GM's words, "having [Antonio] Alfonseca coming back really helps." The overall 4.61 bullpen ERA is high, but much of that is the result of a phalanx of fill-ins whose ERAs reach up to the 32.00 range.

There are side factors that are difficult to judge. There is no love lost between the Florida and Boston ownerships, and now that St. John's reliever Craig Hansen has signed with the Red Sox -- after turning down a $2.6 million offer from the Marlins on draft day that would have allowed Hansen to go straight to the big leagues, prompting the Marlins to ask Bud Selig to investigate -- those feelings might be heightened. The Fish cannot sign Burnett away from free agency, and the fireballing right-hander has made it clear that he probably wouldn't sign an extension with the White Sox but would with the Red Sox if the money is right.

The White Sox have the best record in baseball without Burnett. The Red Sox lead the AL East by 1? games and essentially haven't had their most important 300 innings -- the combination of Curt Schilling as a No. 1 starter and Keith Foulke as a premier closer. A month from now, as they prepare to play 24 of their last 36 games at Fenway Park, they could have Schilling and Foulke in place.

Still, both the White Sox and Red Sox keep thinking that October is the power pitching month, and that Burnett, along with Rich Harden, might have the best stuff in the game. Of course, the Marlins know that, and are just two years removed from seeing how important his stuff is in October.

matt perisho? does he even bother to look up the stats.

and peter, AJ didnt pitch in october of 03

"You Sox fans have to stop fantasizing about getting AJ..."
