July 25, 200521 yr As for Sanchez, the Red Sox have been on a major PR campaign to build awareness and interest in the guy, and for just that reason, one has to be suspicious why they are so quick to jettison the guy if their avowed plan is to cut payroll over the next few years. He's THE GUY they want to get rid of. Beware. 1--The Sox PR department has pimped Anibel recently. 2--Please link to one quote from the Sox FO where they vow to cut salary in the coming years.
July 25, 200521 yr Author The Marlin Man Posted Today, 04:15 PM coming from someone who has watched most of arroyos starts this year, he is over rated. He's inconsistent, streaky and doesn't have that good of "stuff". arroyo is no better than a number 4 starter. He doesn't get many strike outs and is always pitching with a 4+ ERA. Oh, and opponents are hitting over .300 against him, .311 this year with a career average of .331. The guy is over rated. He's just not that good http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6498 Look at Arroyo stats the League is not hitting .300 off Arroyo and didn't last year either. I never said he was a stud but I believe he can be a #3 type like Pavano. Also I would like you you to find me a list of starting pitchers in the AL East who haven't gotten hit hard this year or who have much better # than Arroyo. The only one of the top of my head who has clearly pitched better than Arroyo is Halladay. Ask yourself do u really think Burnett will take a major pay cut to sign with us? This trade just makes us a better team in the long run and we won't miss much of a step this year. I would also like to say the money spent on signing # 1 and second round draft picks would be better spent on getting good free agents.
July 25, 200521 yr You Sox fans have to stop fantasizing about getting AJ. It would be nice for you but it's not happening. Sorry. He's staying right where he is. Hopefully you'll make the Series again, and you can see AJ then. 874157 your setting yourself up for a major letdown if you think Burnett is staying put 874159 it is actually becoming more and more likely that AJ will stay....
July 25, 200521 yr Well, there's another rumor now floating around that the Sox have moved on from Florida, since they will not return calls and are talking to Philly and Texas about 3-way deal in which Soriano and Wagner end up in Boston, with Arroyo, Sanchez, and Shoppach going to Philly--Philly sending Padilla and prospects ontop Texas.

I heard someone mention it also on another board.

July 25, 200521 yr The Chi Sox deal with Contreras and Marte is still better... Decent starter and a great reliever opposed to a waivers reliever and a good starter. Go with the Chi Sox! 874130 Here in Chicago ESPN 1000 was reporting McCarthy and Marte for Burnett with Contreras going to the bullpen. The White Sox tried to trade for Contreras back in June of 2004 to make him a closer, but Kevin Brown went on the DL so the Yanks didn't give him up.
July 25, 200521 yr The bottomline is if the Red Sox want AJ there going to have to overpay Sanchez and Arroyo is not going to make the Marlins jump to the phone and yes we'll take it. Sanchez and either Lester/ Papelbon with Arroyo or Sanchez and Ramirez. They have to blow the Marlins Soxes off :lol ...you get what I'm saying by the way Contreras beat Arroyo yesterday

July 25, 200521 yr Yes I am posting this as a Sox fan, I think Burnett is going to the Red (not White) Sox or will stay with Florida. But, will be a Red Sox next season, either way. Any team can have him for a two month and change rental, but who will take that chance. Here's is how I see the Burnett thing going down. According to info Gammons, etc. gives us, Burnett is not signing an extension with anyone other than Boston, he wants to come here. Meaning he prefers Boston, which corroborates what we have been hearing from others not just Gammons, Olney and Kurjian, etc. Saying Burnett can steer this thing a bit because he is a FA next year, of course, logical. I think Burnett saying he wants to check out his options in FA next year is another way of him saying, I will choose were I want to go to, that is Boston. So the Marlins the way I see it have 2 options, 1) Keep Burnett, he leaves next year for Boston and they receive draft picks 2) Trade him to the Red Sox now for whatever is being offered presently a 3rd option is to trade him to any team other than Boston for a 2 month rental with no extension. This unlikely willing team would be taking a big risk (incidentally the one team that could do this is ironically Boston, since Burnett wants to go to Boston anyway). I don't see the White Sox getting it done, because it seems from the info we can gather Burnett is not signing an extension with the White Sox, and I don't think the White Sox are making this deal without an extension. Burnett can politely let it be known to the WS (Williams), if you trade for me I will not sign an extension and next year I am a FA and really want to go to Boston. So he could go to the W Sox as a 2 month (plus post season ) rental. The real question is how badly does Theo and Co. want Burnett (Now) as opposed to the off season, and will it take something more than Arroyo and Sanchez. That's the question.

Id rather do the Wagner and Soriano deal and forget about Burnett.

July 25, 200521 yr we have to trade burnett, or we wont get anything for him, but we should keep lowell, he is gonna have a good second half end up with 10-12 homers 70-75 rbi's and .255-.260 Avg. and then next year he will be back.

The Marlins trading AJ Burnett for Bronson Arroyo is about as likely as the Patriots trading Tom Brady for AJ Feeley.

July 25, 200521 yr does the poor start from McCarthy bother anyone? I know it's his first season so it's no big deal, just wondering.
July 25, 200521 yr does the poor start from McCarthy bother anyone? I know it's his first season so it's no big deal, just wondering. 874236 He's not ready for the bigs. He was awesome in A ball last year at the beginning of the year and was just as good in AA ball at the end of the season. He had a ridiculous spring training with the big club and they rushed him. The Sox made him thier #6 starter and when el Duque went down they brought him up. He was great against the Cubs in his ML debut but was pretty bad afterwords. He's just not ready to face ML hitters, he doesn't have full confidence in throwing his changeup in the bigs which is his best pitch and he does rely on it. McCarthy is not ML ready but will be a very good starter in the future, it's just going to take 1 or 2 years.
July 25, 200521 yr Either way, Even though Burnett does not have a no trade clause, he has leverage. Now of course the Marlins can send him to anyone they want for the best deal for the Marlins, or keep him for 2 months. But after the 2 months Burnett can say see ya I am a free agent, I am going where I want to. This has to be a Huge concern for most teams looking to bring him aboard now, and the Marlins who will get nothing if he stays put (draft picks). (ironically except the Red Sox I would think) who feel once he is with them and given he is reportedly saying he wants to ultimatley go to Boston anyway). That "other" team than Boston if it is the White Sox, has some serious thinking to do for a rental. The Marlins control this whole thing, obviosuly, but if Burnett won't sign an extension, your "dance partners" besides the Red Sox are limited, and it really being the White Sox and I would think they would be skiddish. Unless they can deal with the very plausible 2 month rental reality. As I said earlier, it may come down to what Theo is willing to do to bring him here now, or not and walk away. Or the Marlins dance with someone else.
July 25, 200521 yr Redsoxmacg5......... You swear that AJ is going to go to boston next year and that he only wants to go there.. you're wrong he will go wherever they pay him the most and wherever he has the best shot to win the WS because he feels that he was not a part of the 2003 since he was hurt. but you think that after the season ends he will pack his bag and head out to boston, you're wrong. he is going to see where he will get paid the most. you think its a done deal but its not, its not even close...the boston newspapers got you to hyped up
July 25, 200521 yr I do not disagree that he will not not follow the money, But that is not the whole scenario here. And is Gammons, Olney and Kurjian making this up that he "prefers" Boston. They must have got it from somewhere. Or are these guys lying just for a story. It's all a moot point anyhow, Burnett goes to where ever they send him to or not and keep him (for 2 months).
July 25, 200521 yr the only place AJ is going is to the beach in Miami. the fish keep winning this week he isnt going anywhere. marlins arent afraid to do what they did with pavano last year.
July 25, 200521 yr example for trading a very good pitcher at the deadline Randy Johnson to Houston from Seattle trade to Seattle Carlos Guillen,Freddy Garcia and John Halama this IMO is what Beinfest is waiting for...
July 25, 200521 yr I personally think thre is a very good chance he ends up within baltimore next year. His family for his wife is there, he has a house up there and enjoys there. But really I dont care where he is next year. All I want to do is get to the WS and beat down John Henry rubbing his face into the mud If the marlins can do that. I think then the fans down here will be happy. I know Loria would be happy
