July 27, 200521 yr Read all about it here: http://www.miamitodaynews.com/news/050728/story3.shtml 876483 Sponsorship should help finance the additional $45 million the Marlins need to build a stadium after the state refused to provide financial aid. :thumbup
July 27, 200521 yr SO DOES THIS MEAN WE ARE GETIING A STADIUM FOR SURE???????????????????/ 876511 No
July 27, 200521 yr Mr. Samson said a decision on a stadium is months rather than weeks away and a site close to the Orange Bowl remains the team's preference. Incase some of you might have missed it There's gonna be silence for quite a while.
July 27, 200521 yr Mr. Samson said a decision on a stadium is months rather than weeks away and a site close to the Orange Bowl remains the team's preference. Unfortunate choice of words there. ..."team's preference" should have said "most likely option". :lol :lol :lol :lol
July 27, 200521 yr Estadio Banco Popular? 876498 That would be horrible, imagine the really really white announcers like DVH saying that name (Live from Uh-stayed-ee-oh Bank-o Pop-you-lure...).

I believe the business is Hispanic.
July 27, 200521 yr I respectfully believe some of you are reading more into this than is realistically plausible. This is a small bank, a micro-bank compared to the financial behemoths we see on every street corner in South Florida. And Miami Today is just blowing smoke out their butts to make the leap from a co-marketing deal to financing a new stadium. I wish it were otherwise but it's the case. The reason the Marlins continue to have to make these nickel and dime deals is because the John Henry orchestrated sale of the franchise and the lease leave marketing to the biggest names in town exclusively to Huizenga Properties. Wayne does business with the whales and leaves the minnows for the Fish.

They are expanding in the US, aggresively targeting the Hispanic community. I'm not saying they are forking the 45 million, but who knows how they may be able to help. They do a bunch of stuff with the Mets as well.
July 27, 200521 yr btw, they signed a 5 year deal with the Mets. And made the following comments c/o PRNewswire According to Richard L. Carrion, president and CEO of Popular, Inc., a financial holding company with over $44 billion in assets and parent company to Banco Popular, "We have actively supported baseball-related initiatives for many years and strongly believe it's a great way to reach out to all the communities we serve in the United States and beyond. Popular is now in the Major Leagues."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they are some checkcashing store, but in the world of high finance they are small potatos. Nice potatos, profitable potatos, but small nonetheless.
July 28, 200521 yr Don't underestimate Richard Carri?n. From my personal experience, I can tell you that everything that man touches turns to gold. Banco Popular may not have the large-capital clientele of Citibank or BofA, but they have been around for over 100 years, and they are a rock-solid.
July 28, 200521 yr Not to turn this into a stadium thread, but I find it odd that even with people offering to pay the needed money for the stadium, no deal has been made yet. It makes me wonder if they are already planning on moving out. I hope this company is willing to pay enough to get the Fish the new stadium.
July 28, 200521 yr WOW!!! I'm writing from the 7th floor of Popular Center here in Puerto Rico (I'm doing an internship here) ...this is great news!!! BPPR isn't a huge bank...YET, we're among the top 30 national banks, we're the biggest hispanic bank, first hispanic company to enter the Fortune Top 100 employer's list, etc, etc.... good news indeed....
July 28, 200521 yr I'm sure because of their Hispanic ties, they might just be able to get the job done.
July 28, 200521 yr Estadio Banco Popular? That would be horrible, imagine the really really white announcers like DVH saying that name (Live from Uh-stayed-ee-oh Bank-o Pop-you-lure...). Yeah, that would be much worse than a hispanic announcer saying "Dole-feen Stah-dee-oom" :whistle
