August 9, 200322 yr BQ Is Jack McKeon the NL Manager of the Year? In a runaway. As much as Trader Jack has been maligned for his age (72), you can't argue with the results. The Marlins are 45-29 since McKeon took over for uber-failure Jeff Torborg on May 11, vaulting themselves into the thick of the wild-card race. If McKeon does win the award, it will be his second in his past three seasons as a skipper (Reds, 1999).

August 9, 200322 yr Does he need to be a full-year manager to qualify or does that even matter? It shouldn't JACK MCKEON IS A GOD :pope :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy
August 9, 200322 yr I wonder how Torborg feels, lol. The last 2 teams he managed, as soon as he left became playoff contenders.
August 9, 200322 yr Torborg is a horrible manager. The talent was there, just would never be fully realized with his sorry a**. McKeon has a proven track record, dont be shocked if he is here next year also. Also dont be shocked if McKeon starts to groom a future successor. And I wouldnt be totally shocked if its Ozzie Guillen.

However you've got to at least admit that Jeff Torborg: 1. Did not have Dontrelle Willis, the #1 reason this team is where it is. (this despite rumors that he asked the FO to bring up Willis instead of Justin Wayne), and... 2. He lost 3 pitchers from his rotation. He was throwing out Tejera, Wayne, and Phelps at one stretch. I'm not apologizing for him, he's nothing special. But virtually the whole team has stated they could have made this turnaround under Torborg. Lowell's mentioned it several times. They didn't have to say that. Is he a good manager? Not particularly, and his record has shown that. His "small-ball" idea was akin to admitting his players didn't have the talent to compete on a normal scale. But parts of that talent you're talking about were absent from Torborg's team. Is there any competition for manager of the year going to McKeon??? I don't think so... Maybe Alou with the Giants?
August 9, 200322 yr Mckeon should get manager of the year. He has done a great job for the horrible manager we had before. He sure deserves it.
August 9, 200322 yr Also dont be shocked if McKeon starts to groom a future successor. And I wouldnt be totally shocked if its Ozzie Guillen. I agree with you Das.
August 9, 200322 yr I was watching an interview with McKeon and when asked the question "Would you like to return to the Marlins next year?" he didn't seem to happy. He tried to change the subject, but eventually ended up saying "maybe." I don't think he's too happy here...

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, the Marlins gave him a job and he's winning, he's happy believe me. He didn't think he would ever manage again and we gave him a chance.

August 10, 200322 yr Well, he probably doesn't know if he's going to be back next year, but I know he is very happy managing this team.
August 10, 200322 yr He's said that he loves being here in interviews. Clearly, the management change has helped our pitching staff alot. I've come to the conclusion that the last pitching coach and Torborg were overworking our pitchers, or just doing something wrong. I think they may have been indirectly responsible for Burnett's arm trouble. The only major pitching injury since McKeon took over that might have been his fault was overworking Spooney. Olsen was out of everyone's hands.
August 10, 200322 yr Also dont be shocked if McKeon starts to groom a future successor. And I wouldnt be totally shocked if its Ozzie Guillen. I wouldn't be surprised at Guillen, but I think Doug Davis is the guy he's going to groom... And I think it's another year or two before Perry Hill is hired somewhere as a manager. Then does an awful job and gets fired. Ala Admin Rothschild.
August 10, 200322 yr Ozzie is definately a managerial candidate when McKeon decides to step down. But, Doug Davis may be the choice of the "Master Plan." A young minor-league operator, credentialled with Loria and company, he was brought up as Bench Coach when McKeon was hired. Doubt he was McKeon's choice. Davis was the FO choice and, I'm learning, they don't do things casually.
August 10, 200322 yr It's either going to be Guillen or Hill. I personally think it will be Hill, but I don't know. They might go with a young Guillen to take over a young team, ala Tony Pena.
