Shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who can become a free agent after the season, has told the Marlins he wants to return next season. "I want to come back. I like it here. I told my agent, 'Try to have a conversation and tell these guys I want to come back,' " he said. Eric Goldschmidt, Gonzalez's agent, has had at least two conversations with the Marlins, including one in July, about the shortstop's desire for a contract extension. "But (the Marlins) haven't said anything," said Gonzalez, who expects serious talks to start after the season. "There's one more month left. I'm focused on my game now, to do my job and help my team get to the next step." Shortstop Jimmy Rollins received a five-year, $40 million extension from Philadelphia. But Gonzalez ? whose power numbers have dropped this year ? could agree to a three-year offer of about $18-21 million. Marlins pitchers have shared credit for their success with Gonzalez and second baseman Luis Castillo, who have turned more double plays than any middle-infield duo since 1998. Link to Full Article I put the odds at 50-50 whether the FO elects to keep him. $6M/yr is a bit much for a guy who struggles at the plate. And this year he is leading the league in errors for SSs. I wouldn't be surprised to see the FO bring up Andino or Wilson.
August 28, 200520 yr I would love to have Gonzo back. He is not "struggling" at the plate, he has just switched from a low average/high power guy to a hig average/lack of power guy. I would be fine with Andido, who is said to be a carbon copy of Gonzo...but no free agents. The only FA SS out there of note is Furcal, and he sucks. Edit: I got ahead of myself

August 28, 200520 yr Until we know what kind of team Beinfest intends to put together next season, including who the manager will be (and with him, his coaches), it's a bit premature to be deciding how Gonzo fits in. That said, I think he and Looie fit well together and I'd like to see them spin their magic together for years to come. But if the FO Fish decide to take a different route, and it works, so be it.

And if that is a true statement, then he wont be very pursued in the offseason. If we are going to go for a stop gap guy, might as well use a Andido or Wilson/Easley platoon. And more people are catching on, ESPN states clearly and quite often how underrated Gonzo is.

The only comparisions to Alex I've read on this board are all negative: defensive lapses on routine plays and their free-swinging ways. Now compare their progress through the minors: Gonzalez and Andino. Do you notice any trends? Do you know of any reason Andino will develop into a similar player as Gonzalez? A better player or worse? Or did you hear this 'comparisions' from the same place you heard Seanez decided to leave after we signed Reidling? Listen, we all come here to get informed on all things Marlins. If you don't know what you're talking about, please don't spread misinformation. Also Easley is not a shortstop. Of the four names I listed above, some of which that have not played shortstop this year, he's the worst defender. He has the arm of a second baseman and range of a thirdbaseman. In his brief stint starting consistently at second base earlier this May, he ranked among the worst secondbasemen in the league statistically and that saw the team drop 5% in the stat Defensive Effiency which measures the percentage of balls in play that were converted into outs. He's a good bench player, providing many clutch hits, but as very much overmatched in any other role. I think they'll acquire a one-year guy as the Marlins did for Alex's rookie year (Benji Gil) and as the present administration has done in recent years (Hollandsworth to hold on once super prospect Will Smith's job, Leiter to bridge to our A/AA pitchign depth, retaining Redmond and Conine to ease younger players in). Piecing together year by year to build a contender has been this administration's MO.

August 28, 200520 yr See if he would take a 3 year 15 million dollar contract perhaps? Or if not that then a contract contigent upon us getting a stadium. Alex is a key part of this team with his defensive play. But, even more is the progress of his swing this year. Did you know he had a RISP of over 300? That is an amazing thing to have when batting in the 8th hole and seeing often crappy pitches. I am all for Alex coming back, I think he could turn into a guy that gives you 280 BA 10-15 HR, 80 RBI in the next couple of years. If so that is an amazing stat line in the SS. Plus his defense isnt GG this year but it is solid.

It's not a perfect stat, but it is one of the better ones out there for judging a fielder's range.
August 28, 200520 yr Stats cannot tell the story of how good or bad a defensive player is. We have errors to show mistakes, but there is no credit for great plays. At the same time, it is easy to see that Easley is not an effective shortstop and should never be counted on to play that position full time.

He's fallen off the baseball map every since the trade. He was one of our best position prospects entering 2002 and 2003, behind only Cabrera and maybe the freshly drafted Hermida. Entering AA in 2003 he was a prime candidate to be our 2004 starting Leftfielder. But he went to Texas in the Urbina trade, struggled the rest of the year and hasn't found his promising power since.
August 28, 200520 yr There are a couple of really good SS that are FA next year like nomar and furcal. Before we look into signing gonzo for an extension. We should first look at nomar and furcal, thats only if the Cubs or Braves don't want to resign them.
