Marlins sign infielder Mike Mordecai as free agent; Transfer right-handed pitcher John Riedling to 60-day DL

HOUSTON -- The Florida Marlins today signed infielder Mike Mordecai as a free agent and transferred right-handed pitcher John Riedling to the 60-day Disabled List. The announcements were made by Marlins Senior Vice President and General Manager Admin Beinfest.

Mordecai, 37, joins the Marlins after serving his first season as manager of the single-A Jamestown Jammers in Florida's organization. His team went 31-44 and finished in fourth place in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division.

Mordecai last played in 2004, batting .226 (19x84) with 1 HR, 5 RBI in 69 games with the Marlins. This season marks his 12th as a player in the Major Leagues. He has hit .245 (333x1,360) with 24 HR, 132 RBI in 791 games with the Marlins, Montreal Expos and Atlanta Braves during his career. Mordecai was originally selected by the Braves in the sixth round of the 1989 June Draft out of the University of South Alabama. He joined the Marlins with right-handed pitchers Carl Pavano and Justin Wayne, left-handed pitcher Graeme Lloyd and a player to be named later (right-handed pitcher Don Levinski) on July 11, 2002, in a trade that sent outfielder Cliff Floyd, infielder Wilton Guerrero and right-handed pitcher Claudio Vargas to Montreal.

Riedling, 30, went on the 15-day Disabled List on Aug. 29 with right shoulder tendinitis. He was recalled from triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 27 and threw in one game, injuring his shoulder on Aug. 28 at Chicago-NL. He went 4-1, 7.16 ERA in 29 games with the Marlins this season, after beginning the season on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis. He went 4-0 with three saves and a 3.00 ERA in 14 games this year with Albuquerque. Riedling was signed as a free agent on Jan. 6 after five seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He is 17-13 with three saves and a 4.41 ERA in 229 games (eight starts) during his career.

Let's hope he brings the magic back with him!!!!

Props to the FO for sticking to their promise.

I hope he gets a chance to play in one of the homestands, so the crowd can acknowledge him. If I'm there, I most certainly will.

ok....am sorry but why is everybody excited to see a career bench player back on the roster after taking a year off and is going to take away AB from guys that acually deserve to be here.......Sorry but i just don't get it

Does he need a certain number of games played, or just on the roster for the pension?

I think everyone pretty much knows that he's not going to play. It's a nice gesture from the team though to give him a spot on the team for the last couple of weeks. He played a pivotal role in our 2003 Championship season, and this is the way of saying thanks.

He needs to kidnap Craig and take over Marlin's on Deck like he and Red did last year.

thanks for clearing that up for me, if that's the way they are going to use him then am all for it......

The only reason they are bringing him up is because he needs 10 more days active on a major-league roster to qualify for a bigger MLB pension because he would then have 10 years of service. It would aslo qualify him for the HOF :D .

MOOOOORDDDDYYYYYYYYYY DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPP TOOOOOOOOO LEEEFTT!! IIITSSSSSSSSS OUTAAAAAAAAA HEEEEEREEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY MORDY I LOVE THIS guy as a player, hes not amazing but hes got heart which is all that counts in my book!

This is exactly why he is here. He is not a good player by any means

Maybe so -- but, he certainly did leave his mark.
