September 25, 200521 yr "mostly dead but somewhat alive". I dont think you can get any more vague than that.
September 25, 200521 yr "mostly dead but somewhat alive". I dont think you can get any more vague than that. He was quoting a movie and I believe his said "almost dead means somewhat alive".
September 25, 200521 yr the last time Loria sold a team to a owner with deep pockets because he was hemmoraging money was the Montreal Expos. The owner with deep pockets were the other MLB teams. Hope we don't end up like that.
September 25, 200521 yr I heard the Samson interview (if you're talking about Thursday on 790) and my read is that you've really misrepresented what was said (if he made subsequent comments I missed then my apologies), regarding Delgado, who he equated with trading Cabrera, and the stadium, where yes he used that live/dead line but it was also in context of him saying Goldberg "sucked". He was commenting on Fat Hank's continual stirring of the pot and being Arriola's PR b*tch when it came to the stadium issue which he said at least twice (Thursday) would be explained very soon after the season ends. What he said was Carlos Delgado was a model Marlin who produced this season and he expects will continue to do so for seasons to come, that they got him knowing Hampton $$$ was coming off the books, that sure there's a chance someone will offer them a trade so huge for the team they would have to take it but the same thing could be said about Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle, etc. The strong, strong implication of his comments was that one guy you could count on next season in a Fish uniform was Carlos Delgado. Maybe I'll have egg on my face come spring training '06 but my take was Delgado is here for at least '06 and probably beyond.
September 25, 200521 yr Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. In a town where fans take every possible chance to claim the team is having a firesale, you're going to go out and say something like "everyone's available" ? Seriously, are you stupid? Do they give you common sense courses when you get hired to a baseball front office? I can't wait to see the articles tomorrow morning about this garbage. Hey Loria, fire this schmuck already. I gotta admit, if you've ever seen Samson speak in person, he is a shmuck, reminds me of a used car salesman. At least the fact that he's usually wrong kind of comforts me here. Exactly what I was thinking. Samson is a fool.
September 25, 200521 yr I'm not basing this on anything Samson said today.....but I do think that anyone who believes either AJ or Delgado to be on the team next year should take a trip to Fantasy Island. Face it. Delgado was a great buy. 4 million for one year. On a team that had a good chance to win THIS YEAR. Next year is different.

Yeah AJ is gone, but if CD goes, its a trade, and if its a trade we will be picking up another huge contract (like Hampton) that will be on our backs for years. If you think that CD going is a lock, your the one thats nuts. Another note, CD and Miggs were able to carry the team this far this year, what happens next year if Lowell is back, 3 with the power instead of 2, and what if Encarnacion goes and Hermida gets to play? 4, Righty, lefty, righty lefty. If yo really think that we have no shot in 06', and that Carlos is gone, you = :banghead

September 25, 200521 yr I was talking to some mutt fans and they told me they wouldnt mind Delgado for Milledge Heilman and Zambrano. What do you guys think if this trade happened?
September 25, 200521 yr I was talking to some mutt fans and they told me they wouldnt mind Delgado for Milledge Heilman and Zambrano. What do you guys think if this trade happened? I'd be extremely angry. It won't happen though because first off I don't believe Delgado goes anywhere and secondly if he did I seriously doubt it would be to the Mets.
September 25, 200521 yr I was talking to some mutt fans and they told me they wouldnt mind Delgado for Milledge Heilman and Zambrano. What do you guys think if this trade happened? If the Marlins trade Delgado, it won't be in the division. The Red Sox, Angels, Orioles and Twins are all teams that are not shy about needing to add infield power, and all are American League teams. Heck, I'd go so far to say that if Delgado is dealt, it won't even be to another team in the league, let alone the division.

What flies in this face of this recurring theory is errant belief that once a player (any player) is traded away somehow the Fish can keep him out of the hands of a division competitor. Life and baseball don't work that way. If the Marlins traded Player A to say the Twins, there is absolutely nothing the Marlins can do to prohibit that player from then being traded to another team at any time, including the Braves, Mets, Nats, etc. The only way to make sure Player A doesn't come back to haunt you is to not trade him in the first place.

That is certainly a more positive spin that what he said on the pregame show. The way it came across was more like preparing the fans for Delgado being dealt. I'm sure when Carlos signed the deal he wasn't expecting the Marlins to dump him the next year, and certainly wouldn't have signed with us if he thought there was a possibility that could happen.
September 25, 200521 yr This is going to one of the more interesting offseasons in franchise history.... :confused

This is true, but it doesn't mean that if the Marlins were to trade player A that they should ship him over to the Mets, just because there's a possibility that another team might send him there once he's traded. Everyone is quite aware that you can't control what happens to a player after he leaves your system -- it's common sense and rather obvious. It's hardly an "errant belief" because nobody even believes it. Look, I don't want to see Delgado gone, but sometimes an organization needs to trade a player. If that is the situation, the Team is not going to keep the player just so they can prevent him from falling into a rival's hands. The front office will just do everything within in their power to make sure he doesn't end up there.
September 25, 200521 yr Don't read too much into this... Samson is very blunt. Almost to a fault. If the club was going to do what you think it might do, he would have said it.
September 25, 200521 yr Trading Delgado would make a lot of money sense but it would really hurt us. Cabs is awesome but he needs that other guy to help him get good pitches. Plus he has shown how much he wants to win by hitting really well when it counts. I like that, I didn't know how good of a clutch hitter he was with Toronto. Sure he is going to be making more per year each of the next three years but I think he is worth it if anyone on this team is. I am also saying this as Delgado fan. Peace

That theory is sound if it's involving a player like AJ Burnett at the deadline, when it was pretty evident that if the White Sox or Red Sox got him, he'd have been shipped to the Phillies for Wagner, but a player like Delgado is a little different, and here's why: In Delgado, you'd be getting an unquestioned difference maker, and the teams acquiring him would need his presence in the lineup more than any thing else. Additionally, with the Red Sox and Orioles figuring to be likely suitors, finances rarely become an obstacle when a player is actually worth the money he's earning.
September 25, 200521 yr I was talking to some mutt fans and they told me they wouldnt mind Delgado for Milledge Heilman and Zambrano. What do you guys think if this trade happened? That'd be awful. Millege and Petit and I'd consider it.

September 25, 200521 yr I'm a big Delgado fan. He's been everything we expected of him, both offensively and defensively. But I think he's a $14M luxury on a team that doesn't figure to be playoff competitive. That is unless we make some big moves with our pitching staff. We're going to lose Jones...and there's nobody else of note in the bullpen. So that has to be completely overhauled. Our starting rotation lines up as Dontrelle, Beckett, and...........who.....Vargas(looks good, but who knows what to expect), and ????. . . In Beinfest We Trust!
September 26, 200521 yr If we have to trade Delgado in the offseason, which I dont want to. I would prefer trading him to the Mets to prevent them from getting Manny.
