Your 2006 Marlins Starting Rotation

Featured Replies

I would love for us to find a way to get Wells from Pitt, he would do great in our ballpark.

1. Willis

2. Beckett

3. Wells

4. Vargas

5. Olsen/ Johnson (whoever wins it out of spring training)

somehow get it done Beinfest

i echo that sentiment.....Kip Wells owes the Phillies.

LOL!!

If that makes you sick how about this report... Marlins are iterested in bring back Braden Looper

ummm...wasnt this a post about the starting rotation?

Read the whole thread and you will understand why I said that....

Anyways, I think bring Wells in would be a great idea! I would take him over Byrd... But how much is Wells going to ask for is the big question!

kip wells would be a great acquisition, besides, he always kills the marlins.

and paul byrd would be a liability issue, i don't think he can stay healthy.

Why is everybody so damn high off Johnson ONE good MLB start and no AAA starts and people are saying he could be our 5th starter and why not Olsen he proved himself in the middle of the season before an injury derailed him so if someone can give me a convincing argument for Johnson over Olsen or Moehler who had a good first half I will gladly listen

Why not Johnson and Olsen both.

Olsen has great stuff, so does Johnson, we all know what Vargas brings to the table.

Olsen will be our next big LH star pitcher.

Johnson is the next Brad Penny.

There is no convincing arguement as to one over the other. But with the way Moehler faded so quickly, I dont want him back in the rotation.

I think Olsen defenitly has the edge, that is if he isnt used for trade bait, but I can see Olsen and Johnson duking it out in spring training for the 5th spot....may the best man win, and just cause one of them wins it out of spring training dosent guarentee that they will be there all year if they are underpreforming

I believe it's already been mentioned in this thread, or perhaps another So many threads, so little time...hehehe), but the real problem with having so many rookie arms starting is that you are asking them to almost double their innings over what they've ever thrown before in their lives. To go from 120 +/- innings to 200 or more is almost assuredly too much to ask and expect a positive result accross the board.

That said, ala Brian Moehler, Ismael Valdez, sorta, you might see Vargas and Johnson (pick two of Vargas, Olsen, Johnson, Ungs) beginning the season as starters and the other two guys in the pen, and at some point, perhaps around the 120 inning mark, if all are healthy, seeing a flip flop.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Vargas, Olsen, Ungs, Johnson, Messenger and Resop all having sustantial roles next season, although if they make a run at a Kip Wells, Pittsburgh (in this scenario) may want one of the four plus another prospect in return.

Saguaros can't navigate Rafters

Ungs, Grand Canyon 'pen don't give Peoria much to work with

By Michael Echan / MLB.com

The Grand Canyon bullpen picked up where Nic Ungs left off for a victory over Peoria. Nic Ungs and three Rafters relievers shut down the heart of the Saguaros order as Grand Canyon bested Peoria, 6-3, on Monday.

One of the top prospects in the Marlins organization, Ungs (2-0) was solid through five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. The Dubuque, Iowa native also struck out two and did not give up a walk.

The bullpen was even tougher on the Peoria lineup as three relievers combined to toss four no-hit innings. Logan Kensing (Marlins) pitched in the sixth, Ricky Barrett (Twins) tossed a perfect seventh and Taylor Tankersley (Marlins) was on the mound for the eighth and ninth innings for the save.

All four pitchers stymied the Saguaros lineup as the No. 3-7 batters were hitless for the game.

Grand Canyon was down, 3-2, going into the bottom of the fourth when it touched up Matt Peterson (Pirates) for three runs. Matt Moses (Twins) and Robert Andino (Marlins) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, then scored on a single and a sacrifice fly by Rangers farmhands Drew Meyer and Mike Nikeas respectively.

Peoria scored all three of their runs in the third inning, two of them coming on a double by Brendan Harris (Nationals) to right. Peterson (0-4) took the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings.

The Rafters will host the Mesa Solar Sox at 3:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday, while the Saguaros return to Peoria to face the Javelinas at the same time.

---------------

Ungs continues to pitch extremely well in the AFL, and maybe all is not lost with Kensing and Tankersley. One thing I had forgotten that may also be worth mentioning is that Andino is only 21.

I'd rather trade Kensing for ONE sunflower seed (not even an entire bag) than see him in the rotation or in the bullpen. The guy's got nothin after we messed him up in 2004.

I think that Olsen and Vargas both have the stuff and composure to be in the rotation next year... but we can't have three inexperienced guys in there. Josh Johnson doesn't seem ready in either aspect... I'd like to go out and get a quality veteran for the fifth spot in the rotation. A better version of Valdes.

Do you think that a trade of Kip Wells for Wily Mo Pena makes sense for both teams? Wells has great stuff but seems to need a change of scenery. Pena is a legit 40-home run player. Pena in right field allows Craig Wilson to move back to first and gives the Bucs a legit power threat and protects Jason Bay. -- Mark A, Philadelphia

Of the dozens of trade scenarios fans have submitted to me in the past few weeks, Mark, I would say yours is the most plausible. In fact, this deal was being discussed, at least internally, by the Pirates prior to the trading deadline.

The Reds have a glut of outfielders with Pena, Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns, and starting pitching has been their Achilles heel for years. Despite his struggles the past two seasons, Wells would probably have the highest ceiling of anyone on the Reds starting staff if this deal was made.

Rarely is any trade perfect, however, and this proposal is no different. First of all, you always run the risk of a pitcher like Wells finally putting it all together, and you'd hate to see him play for a team within your division. Pena is a right-handed power hitter who strikes out a lot, and the Pirates already have a couple of guys (Wilson and Brad Eldred) who fit that bill. He also has been known to let his mind wander on defense.

With all of that being said, this is a deal that seems to make sense for both teams.

Pirates right-hander Kip Wells is probably the top candidate to be dealt

how much do you guys think it will take to get this guy. one of our pitching prospects for sure and a bat, what else do you guys think

Pittsburgh's FO are not swift deal makers, so they would ask for something substantial for Wells. Remember when we asked about Mesa? Thier asking price to start out was Hermida.

I'm not sure if you mean the Pirates' FO isn't speedy or intelligent when it comes to making trades but my guess is if and when they part with Wells, it will be for younger, cheaper quality pitching help, and maybe more than one prospect/player.

Essentially you'd giving up a Vargas, Olsen, Johnson, Ungs, etc., plus a lower level player as well, for a more experienced MLB-seasoned pitcher, who can contribute immediately.

Marlins2003,

Teams don't trade significant parts for older prospects who have not proven or given the opportunity. Ungs is in the same position Willingham was last year. The only difference is the talent and multitude of Ungs' competition for that opportunity.

You might want to try rereading my post again...

this team is a contender and to be a contender you need players that have done the job and have experience. Not 3 rookies

Vargas can stay as a 4th or 5th starter

FA or via trade the team needs to aquire another starter ... even if that means trading the Johnsons, Ungs or whoever

I think Olsen will battle for that 5th spot as well
