Rick Helling And Lenny Harris?

Featured Replies

patience people.

you have one week to wait.

then rosters get expanded.

patience.

we are only 1/2 game out.

i told you harris would be here prior to 8/31.

helling....well hope for something decent out of him....probably will only be used in a mop-up/long relief role.

Dont worry too much.

I think Lenny and Helling will help. It doesn't hurt to have the pinch-hit leader on your bench and Helling in your pen.

Baltimore is very different from the Pro and other NL parks.

LOL it will hurt once Helling starts to lose games on his own. This guy is an Almanza clone

Almanza clone? Why, cuz he sucked as a STARTER?

He has done fine in the pen, and I never remember Almanza winning 20 games in a season.

Do you remember his ERA that year by any chance? 4.41 If it wasn't for the Run support no way he wins anywhere near 20 games.

Here is his career stats for you people who haven't seen him pitch before

My guess is that they'll help us out a little. I believe that Helling was signed to be a long reliever, but I could be wrong.

McKeon had to have some input in this move and he must have his reasons for letting Beinfest do it. Beinfest wouldn't have made these moves without asking Jack.

Marlins get help from veterans

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

DENVER -- Some veteran experience is on the way to help the Marlins during their end-of-season run.

Immediately following Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Rockies at Coors Field, the Marlins announced that they have selected the contract of infielder Lenny Harris and agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Rick Helling.

The left-handed hitting Harris, 38, holds the Major League record for all-time pinch-hits, with 177. The Miami native signed a minor league contract with the Marlins on Aug. 7 and has been at Triple-A Albuquerque. He had been with the Cubs most of the season, and is expected to join the Marlins on Friday in San Francisco.

Helling, who previously played for the Marlins in 1996-97, was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Aug. 15.

A longtime starter, Helling will be used in relief. Before officially joining the squad, he must pass a physical. He is expected to be in San Francisco with the team and ready to pitch either Friday or Saturday.

Also on Thursday, outfielder Todd Hollandsworth was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation of the lower back. In addition, left-handed pitcher Armando Almanza was put on the DL with tendinitis in his left shoulder.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Helling and Harris, the Marlins transferred pitchers Tim Spooneybarger (right elbow sprain) and Kevin Olsen (concussion) to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day list.

Spooneybarger and Olsen are eligible to come off the DL in September and could be on the postseason roster, which must be set Sept. 1.

Read the article above and that will answer many of your questions. McKeon had the thing planned out. Helling in the pen and Harris off the bench.

a 4.41 era in arlington is not bad.

you dont win 20 games and suck.

he also won 16 game 2 years after that.

this does not happen by 'accident'

he is a decent pitcher and whoever said he has never had talent obviously doenst know their heads from their toes.

Helling is a decent pitcher,With the Fish in 97'. He could be a good asset in the bullpen.

He once was a 20 game winner with Texas.

I'd rather have a decent pitcher with luck, than a good pitcher with bad luck.

Would you take Kenny Rogers (11-6) over Barry Zito (10-10) this season?

Would you take Kenny Rogers (11-6) over Barry Zito (10-10) this season?

Seriously,

If I was looking for a year like the Marlins had in 1997, and it was something where we had to have alot of wins, I would take Rogers. Even with his struggles, the guy has some luck and wins a respectable amount of games.

Zito is amazing, but he has lost quite a bit and has allowed alot of runs in those losses. (His record is similar to that of carl Pavano, even though he pitches well)
