September 1, 200323 yr Yes, another Conine topic... Many of you are badmouthing this trade and are calling for Admin Beinfest's head because we dealt away 2 pitching prospects. People, think for a second -- they are prospects. Players that will not help us win the wild card this year. Who cares about the future right now? We are tied for the lead for a playoff spot with 1 month to go and in that month we play the teams we are competing with for the most part. This means the ball is in our court. We either sit back and hope we pull thru or we make a deal like this and build up confidence in the boys that we want to win now! Sitting on your a** and hoping to make the playoffs won't get it done. We needed a jolt and who better to return to the teal and black then the man who has the name Mr. Marlin? He's the man I wanted back from 1997 the most. He may not put up Brian Giles numbers but he is a leader and has experience in games and is a teacher and is a nice guy. Say what you want but Jeff Conine will make an impact, I am stating right now that Jeff will really make a difference even if his stats do not reflect it. Just wait and see. *looks at Conine autographed 8x10 on wall* Welcome back Jeff, I missed you and so did the rest of the Marlins fans even if they don't know it yet.
September 1, 200323 yr This was a good trade. Beinfest said he didnt want to give up on this race by not gettting someone. He tried to get Spiezo and Payton and failed. The only one left was Conine. We did give up Bautista but it was worth it. We got another clutch hitter that can drive in runs just like Pudge. BTW: Nicely said Admin
September 1, 200323 yr his impact will be another 5 hits....maybe. The whole leader in the clubhouse...bla bla bla. I dont really believe in that stuff. Essentially, it still comes down to the players and their talent.
September 1, 200323 yr Somehow people have forgot how frustrated everyone was with the Hollandsworth/Banks platoon in LF at the beginning of the season. Now Lowell gets hurt and they want to go back to that and not get a proven run-producer. I don't get it.
September 1, 200323 yr Don't forget guys, this deal was not just for this year, but for next year as well. These are the deals that get some '97 fans back out. Get back a fan fav that can still help us win at a moderate price. Beinfest did extreamely well with this deal. Remember when we thought we'd have to give-up Lee to get Jeff, and everybody was chomping at the bit to do that deal? Well, now we just made an even BETTER deal than that, and you're all complaining?
September 1, 200323 yr Good Morning everbody, boy it was a long night. I think everbody has had a chance to think about this trade and have had a chance to let it sink in. So I thought I add something to this...Look the Marlins traded Will Smith, Adrain Gonzalez, Ryan Snare, Denny Bautista and Don Levinski to acquired Conine, Urbina, Helling, Fox and L.Harris for this playoff push. NOW LETS GO MAKE THE PLAYOFF AND MAKE SOME NOISE!
September 1, 200323 yr his impact will be another 5 hits....maybe. The whole leader in the clubhouse...bla bla bla. I dont really believe in that stuff. Essentially, it still comes down to the players and their talent. He is the only person on the Marlins roster with an All Star MVP award, he didn't get it for nothing.
September 1, 200323 yr he also got that awhile ago. I mean, we also have a ROY on our team (Hollandsworth).
September 1, 200323 yr Furman, He is the best person for the job. 1) Is familiar with NL pitching. 2) Is familiar with PPS's LF. 3) Is familiar with PPS. 4) Is a fan favorite. 5) Is as clutch as can be. 6) Likes SoFla 7) Brings experience to the team. 8) Has been to the postseason. 9) Versatile Veteran 10) Saves us money.
September 1, 200323 yr he also got that awhile ago. I mean, we also have a ROY on our team (Hollandsworth). Yes but unlike Hollandsworth..Conine is doing better now then he was 6 years ago.
September 1, 200323 yr Jeff Conine is a professional hitter. He'll have to adjust somewhat, but remember, Jeff is a career . 300 hitter in PPS.
September 1, 200323 yr Conine was the best option, like I said he can help us in the next seasons while no other player we could have aquired could. He can increase the attendance slightly,he provides veteranship which is a good asset to have on a playoff team,(not to mention post-season experience.)his clutch-hitting and his finical aid, It won't take him too long to adjust to the pitching,he has faced many NL pitcher's before and it has been easier to adjust to a different league ever since inter-league play was concived. If Beinfest didn't get Conine last night then he would have never been on this club again.
September 1, 200323 yr Conine was the best option for the future, easily. That's all I'm going to say.
September 1, 200323 yr his impact will be another 5 hits....maybe. The whole leader in the clubhouse...bla bla bla. I dont really believe in that stuff. Essentially, it still comes down to the players and their talent. Post of the day. Its not even worth arguing anymore furman.
September 1, 200323 yr Conine was the best option for the future, easily. That's all I'm going to say. We will enjoy paying him his 5 millon+ the next 2 seasons. We could have had Lee for 2-3million more.
September 1, 200323 yr We will enjoy paying him his 5 millon+ the next 2 seasons. We could have had Lee for 2-3million more. Conine's contract runs up after next year, and he only makes $4.5 Mill, give or take.
September 1, 200323 yr WC, The Marlins Restructerd his Contract thru 2005. So he's with us TWO years after this? If he can still hit in 2005, I'm all for it.

My words exactly....
September 1, 200323 yr Lee for 2-3 MM more? Combine that with the money we are saving by letting Castillo go and we can re-sign Lowell. This organization still has to survive with getting the most value for its money. If Lee goes, Conine takes over 1B and holds the spot for Stokes. Passing the torch... I too think we overpaid for Conine. But I think we couldnt just sit on our behinds and expect to make the playoffs. I didnt want to see us do what we did (deal prospects for a vet bat) but at the same time I was not thrilled with us going down the stretch run without a quality, proven bat in left. My thinking was bring in Abe Nunez and platoon with Banks. Face it, we dont make this move, we have a very hard time keeping our foothold among the top teams. We got to play the Braves in the coming weeks, and Conine is going to have a lot to do with the success of our team over this stretch. (And if you think he is only going to get 5 hits during this time, well, you got problems.) Conine will have an impact, both on and off the field. We did overpay, but we couldnt afford to NOT make a move.
September 1, 200323 yr johnny your killing me man. 5 EXTRA hits over what the Banks/TH platoon would have gotten in the same period of time. 5 hits is the difference between .250 and .300 during a month's ABs. I wont call this trade a disaster yet, but if Conine doesnt absolutely tear the cover off the ball it will be. We could have signed an average vet this off-season to hold down 1B for 1-2 million. Instead we are saddled with a 5million+ salary for the next 2 seasons FORCING our hand in the Derrek Lee situation giving us no leverage when trading him. So instead of paying 7-8million for the best defensive 1B and a major power threat we are paying 5mil+ for an almost retired former AS game MVP. (whoopity DOO) If this makes sense to you I just cant argue it anymore. :plain
September 1, 200323 yr I don't care if Conine only has 5 more hits than TH/Banks would or not, because now we have a starter at 1B for next season.
September 1, 200323 yr I don't care if Conine only has 5 more hits than TH/Banks would or not, because now we have a starter at 1B for next season. HURRAY! We could have had Lee for 2 more million.
