Bad Back Stops Brown

Kevin Brown pitched in successive World Series ? in 1997 with Florida and in 1998 with San Diego ? then signed a seven-year, $105 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Baseball life would never be the same.

The contract completed, Brown, who will turn 41 next month, has concluded that life. His career is over.

"Kevin didn't have me pursue any teams because he wanted to see how his health was," his agent, Scott Boras, said. "He decided after the painful process last year he was not going to play. His arm is still remarkably good, but it's about his back. He had to endure a lot to throw last year."

Brown's back strains limited him to 13 starts with the Yankees last season, sent him to the disabled list three times and ended his season July 23. He finished his career with a 211-144 record.

I will never forget Brown's years in 1996 and 1997, it was great to seem him everytime he was out on the mound, i liked his wind up too.

Considering some of the seasons he had ('96 + '98), he is probably one of the best pitchers ever to not win a Cy Young.

i agree completely with Passion

Thanks Kevin for all your hard work and determination

I'll miss him for sure.

If he wasn't injured the last few years, he had a chance at the Hall, I think.

Hate to define a guy's career by one game but I'm not a fan of Kevin Brown for the BS he pulled in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS when he claimed he could pitch and took the ball, had a disgusting outing and then later said he wasn't 100%.

I would like to thank Mr. Brown for that and spotting us 5 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings in that game.

Heck of a competitor, heck of a career.

I may be wrong, but I believe he started his Yankee career well, and it all snow-balled after the wall punching.

Sorry to see him go, he'd still be one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball if his back was fine, real shame.

Didn?t he have a stint where he went for about 5 years with the lowest era in the league or something really impressive like that?

I always remember that game in ?97 when Leyland wanted to take him out and he threw a fit in the dugout in full view of the cameras. Leyland finally gave in and later admitted Brownie was right. Two ornery types going at each other and the viewing public desperately trying to lip-read. He was fun to watch!

Maybe not the same game you're thinking of, but that happened in the clincher for the NLCS in Atlanta.

If Jeff Kent were a pitcher, he'd be Kevin Brown.

That's a positive remark as much as it is a negative one. They're world class players when healthy and world class competitors that come across as jerks.

Yep, I think that was the one! I'm not sure because they butted heads many times. Then again, just about everyone butted heads with Leyland at one time or another except maybe Bonilla. It's just that with Kevin Brown it always seemed magnified. He wasn't known as the nicest guy in the world but every time he took the mound you felt like you were in for a treat. Once the serious injuries started he was never the same but when he was healthy he was incredible and made it look so effortless. I loved his style.

Perfect comparison.

My only difference is that Kent is a sure fire hall of famer, Brown not so much.

Probably one of the least liked players in MLB, but my one of my favorite Marlins of all time. He was absolutely amazing in 1996...best season by a Marlins pitcher ever and one that I doubt will ever be matched. Thanks for the memories.

More to do with the positions they played, their level and aspect of talent than anything else

Wow. I have so many Kevin Brown memories. Great player and defines what a competitor should be. Two fantastic years a marlin pitcher. Perhaps 96 was the greatest season ever by a marlin sp. I hate to see him go.

Dodger, although it's a tough one, because he is not regarded as a Dodgers great nor is his attitude one that most want to associate with the widely respected (atleast among HOF voters) Dodgers organization.

I think this topic should be moved to the Marlins section. K. Brown will always be a Marlin. And any negative talk about any of Browns seasons with any team should be treated as heresy by traitors! Long Live K. Brown and thank you for your service to the rightful colors of Teal, and Black.

I think he may be up for the Hall at some point, but he'll never get it.

Sheffield will be the first player in the hall as a Marlin.

Not sure that he'll go in as a Marlin. My bet is that Miggy or Dontrelle have the best shot to go in to the HOF as Marlins.
