March 4, 200620 yr Marlins' Reese surfaces following two-day absence Associated Press Posted March 3 2006, 7:19 PM EST JUPITER, Fla. -- Florida Marlins second baseman Pokey Reese failed to show up for two consecutive days of spring training without explanation, briefly raising concerns regarding his whereabouts before he contacted his agent, the team said Friday. General manager Admin Beinfest said Reese gave no indication that he was taking time off, and for two days the team had no idea where he was. ``We tried to track him down starting yesterday,'' Beinfest said Friday. ``He was playing well. He looked healthy. We were happy with him, and he appeared to be happy.'' Worries were allayed Friday evening by Reese's agent, Mike Nicotera. ``We have been informed through his agent that he is safe,'' said team spokesman Matt Roebuck, who added that the club had been told nothing further. Nicotera didn't return calls seeking comment. Reese missed a workout Thursday. The Marlins had him in the lineup for Friday's game against Baltimore, but he again failed to show. Reese, a two-time Gold Glove winner, spent all of last season on the disabled list with the Seattle Mariners following shoulder surgery. He signed with the Marlins in December. ``I'm not upset with him,'' manager Joe Girardi said before Reese surfaced. ``I just want to hear his voice that he's OK.'' The 32-year-old Reese, who grew up in a depressed neighborhood in Columbia, S.C., has been forced to cope with a succession of family tragedies. His fiancee died in a car crash in 1993. Three years later, the mother of his son, Naquawan, died while delivering a child fathered by another man. Naquawan went to live with his maternal grandmother and great-grandmother. Both women were murdered on Christmas Eve 1997. ``Baseball helps me free my mind from the past,'' Reese said shortly after reporting to spring training with the Marlins last week. He began his major league career in 1997 with Cincinnati and won a World Series ring with Boston in 2004.
March 4, 200620 yr Well, I'm relieved that he's safe; but still, that's not normal. Something must have happened.
March 4, 200620 yr ya he's safe. now he is just an idiot. Come on dude... Give the guy a chance to explain what the hell happened... And gotta love Girardi sounding like a dad...
March 4, 200620 yr ya he's safe. now he is just an idiot. Come on dude... Give the guy a chance to explain what the hell happened... And gotta love Girardi sounding like a dad... unless there was something wrong with his momma or his kids there is no excuse for just simply disappearing.

And until you know for sure that this wasn't the case, give him the benefit of the doubt. God knows he wasn't blessed with good luck... I just don't see a veteran like him missing for two days without a very good reason.
March 4, 200620 yr Keep your insight to yourself for now DAS until we find out what happened. If he posts here you can go ahead and do one of your quick deletes of what he says if you don't approve.
March 4, 200620 yr He's still the greatest player on the Marlins. It does not surprise me at all that he has been kicking ass in Spring Training. All Star Game 06.
March 4, 200620 yr Come on Das, you'd want to normal Joe to give you the benefit of a doubt if you disappeared. Give the guy a break.
March 4, 200620 yr Come on Das, you'd want to normal Joe to give you the benefit of a doubt if you disappeared. Give the guy a break. usually when you dont show up for work when scheduled and then dont tell anyone... its like submitting your resignation. not all of us are lucky enough to have agents do our dirty work for us. like i said, unless something happened to his mama or kids, there is no excuse.
March 4, 200620 yr Just as one example, last time I went into the hospital, it was a rush rush emergency situation. No time to call work and no family members there till after 5 when work closed. Happened on a Friday. So I wasn't able to let work know what happened until Monday. I guess this wouldn't cut it with you though DAS. Maybe you should just do one of your quick "lock the thread". Quickest gun in the west in locking threads. Too many people disagreeing with you.
March 4, 200620 yr Das - All everyone is saying is give the guy a chance to explain what happened before you start calling him an idiot... If it turns out that he left just cause he wanted a break, nobody here will contest what you're saying. But until we know what happened, we're all just hoping he's safe and are giving him the benefit of the doubt.. You're a little quick to be saying anything else at this point. On a related note - The Miami Herald today reported that he's unlikely to come back. Not sure where that came from, but I really wonder what the hell is going on with him...
March 4, 200620 yr It's interesting- in reading the Herald and Sun-Sentinel on Friday morning, I didn't come across any mention of the fact that Pokey Reese was a no-show on Thursday. You'd think they would report something like that.

March 4, 200620 yr Dave Van Horne just mentioned on the radio that Pokey is out of the picture. I suppose there not expecting him back.
