April 18, 200620 yr Rank your top 7 Marlin managers in history. And no Cookie Rojas' 1-0 record does not count. Here are my picks: 1- Jim Leyland (old school chain smoker who makes good decisions) 2- Jack McKeon (old school chain smoker who wears out his welcome and calls people by their wrong names) 3- John Boles (a guy who never got enough credit- he was never given a chance with a talented team) 4- Jeff Torberg (didn't win with same parts McKeon had- kills pitchers) 5- Rene Lacheman (was never manager material although he only had an expansion team) 6- Joe Girardi (gets respect big time from players but he hasn't shown that he knows more than the average fan) 7- Tony Perez (nice guy- lousy manager)
April 18, 200620 yr Author Jack without a doubt. Three Years, Three Wining Seasons. thats a success. I love Jack but if Huizenga didn't break up that team- Leyland could have had 5 winning years. I think Leyland is just a good numbers guy- Detroit will be good this year because of him.

April 18, 200620 yr Depends on the situation, but Jack (all his faults included) is/was the most likely to be successful under the greatest amount of situations.
April 18, 200620 yr Author It's too difficult to chose between Jack and Jim Leyland. Both were/are great managers. I guess Jack is just more lovable with the media. However, if I had to chose one to manage my team as an owner- I would pick Jimmy Leyland and those thick Shadez glasses.
April 18, 200620 yr It is way to early to rank Girardi, but overall I would say Jack has been our best manager to date. One thing that I will add about Girardi is that I think he may be too emotional a manager to handle all of the hard losses he will accumulate this season. I am already seeing signs that these hard losses are taking a major toll on him. We'll see how it turns out.
April 18, 200620 yr Jack simply because he did more with less than Leyland did. Leyland was handed a team that was designed to win, not necessarily the World Series, but win. Jack on the other hand was giving the reigns of a team with the task of just getting the team to respectability. True Jack didn't do much since the '03 season and we'll never know well Jim would have done had the team not been imploded, but we kind of have to give it to Jack because 3 winning season actually happend while Jim's is only a what could have been.
April 18, 200620 yr Of course its Jack, 3 winning seasons and, oh yeah, a world series championship. Leyland woul prob be second but you cant compare his 97 team to Jack's 03 team. One more thing, you can't possibly make a fair assessment on Girardi after only 12 games, and how could you go as far as saying he knows as much as the average fan????? Thats a fairly ignorant remark.

April 18, 200620 yr 1. Jack McKeon 2. Jim Leyland 3. Fill in the blank. Seriously, it goes downhill after #2.

One thing that I will add about Girardi is that I think he may be too emotional a manager to handle all of the hard losses he will accumulate this season. I am already seeing signs that these hard losses are taking a major toll on him. We'll see how it turns out. Yeah so true. They panned into the dugout a few times last nite and he was in complete agony in there ( I would be too) but he is gonna have to have some real thick skin this year. Girardi looked like he was having contractions when Aguila bobbled the routine single TWICE last nite. I see the Marlins maybe winning 2 games on the remainder of this road trip. Just being realistic. Oh and my top 3 are: Leyland Boles McKeon....Girardi will be a good manager....he just needs some time.
April 18, 200620 yr Top MARLINS Managers 1- Jack McKeon - took a young team doing poorly and turned them in to winners. I am not a Jack fan but he has been their best manager. 2- John Boles - in '96 he took a team Lacheman had playing .453 ball and he went 41-35. In '99 he then took a team that Leyland went 54-108 with and increased their win total by 10 and then 15 the following season. If not for MIcelli and the rest of the riff raff he could have taken the team as far as Leyland went in '97. 3- Rene Lacheman - A .437 winning % is not bad for the situation he was in. He was great for a new team but probably had to go when he did. Also, I loved his lunch with Lach show on QAM every Wednesday at Noon. 4- Jim Leyland - He won 92 games with a team that was capable of winning 102. He then won 54 games with a team Boles won 64 with the following season. I only rate him # 3 because our history is about three managers....our first and our two flags. 5- Joe Girardi - I rate him above Torborg for one reason, he has yet to show he is willing to kill pitchers arms. Joe gets an Inc. I love his agressive style, but I hope he learns not to over-manage. I also hope he has the stomach for the types of losses we have had. 6- Jeff Torborg - He was just there. Good guy. Horrible for pitchers careers. 7- Tony Perez - Didn't have a style...I never understood what he said. Boles the year before and Torborg the year after him had better records.
April 18, 200620 yr 1. Jack McKeon, because he turned the team around and led them to the title 2. Jim Leyland - had more parts than McKeon in 1997, but still did a great job leading them to the title 3. John Boles - he was a pretty good manager, just never had a good team 4. Rene Lacheman 5. Joe Girardi - needs to prove himself, but i think he has a good future in managing 6. Jeff Torborg 7. Tony Perez
April 18, 200620 yr I've got Jack and Leyland 1-2 in that order, and Boles a distant third. Frankly I haven't been too impressed with Girardi, from what I've seen his decisionmaking has been questionable (such as not pinch hitting for Nolasco with the bases loaded down by 4, using Herges as a closer on Sunday). Hopefully that will improve as he gets more seasoning. I'm gonna just toss it out there though that I don't like the Yankees at all so I wasn't a huge fan of this move from the start.
