Sign Or Trade

Featured Replies

If the Marlins were in a position to sign free agents or trade for players for the 2007 season who would you want to sign or trade? Would you keep Olivo or sign someone else? Would any one want to bring JP back?

At this point you have to keep Olivo. But why even ask this question. Its Loria's intent to keep payroll scaled back so any thoughts of mid-to-high priced FA's is out of the question until the year that new stadium opens.

If they're players on the free-agent market, this year is shaping up as one of the deepest in history, could be a quick rebuilding.

Free Agency Rules:

Must have 6 full years of Major League service time to be eligible for free agency (both Disabled-List and Active Roster time count for service) (1 year of service is equal to 162 games)

The players contract must also expire for him to be eligible for Free Agency

Players can not sign with other teams then their own until after the 15-Day Period following the conclusion of the World Series. During the 15 days they can negotiate with their previous team and if an agreement is not reached, that player can file for Free Agency.

Sometime between Dec. 18 and Dec. 22 players who are not arbitration eligible, cannot re-sign with their old teams until May 15 of the next year.

Players who are offered arbitration can re-sign till January 8th. On this day they must declare whether they accept or reject arbitration. If he accepts arbitration he has re-signed with his old team can still can sign a deal with that team before his arbitration hearing. If he goes into arb., the single year contract value is decided by an MLB arbitrator

An un-signed player who has at least 3 years of service time is also eligible for arbitration. The top 1 third of players as determined by their statistics are also be eligible for arbitration. Players are arb.-eligible again in there 4th and 5th years of service, if he does not have a multi-year contract and meets requirements. A player with 2 years of service time, if an arbitrator deems the player a Super-Two. This usually happens if a player has been a starter for his first two seasons and his stats resembles those of the top players at that position.

A minor league player who has spent the previous six years with the same organization is also eligible for minor league free agency. A player that has six years of minor league service, with various teams, is also deemed a six-year Minor League FA.

At the end of each year each free agent is dubbed a Type A or Type B or Type C depending on their stats with Type A free agents being at the top third of the stats that MLB uses. A team that loses a Type A free agent is compensated with the 1st round pick of the team that signs him. This team also gets a supplemental or sandwich pick between rounds 1 and 2. A team losing a Type B free agent is simply compensated with the highest player that is signed. For instance if Team A signs X and O but only O who was picked in the 2nd round was signed. Team B would only get Player O not X. But in both cases a team selecting in the 1st half of the 1st round cannot lose its 1st round pick. Teams that lose Type C free agents are compensated with a sandwich pick between rounds 2 and 3.

I think that list's a little outdated. Lowell and a few others had options guaranteed. Here's another source, if you're interested. http://www.mlb4u.com/0607FA.html

I am a huge fan of Addam Dunn aka the lumber Jack :thumbup but i didnt see Torri HUnter on that list i thought he was gonna be a free agent

A lot of great players, and a bunch of good ones too. I thought we should've kept Lo Duca to work with these young pitchers, do we really need to cut salary that much? IMO we're fine at 2B, SS, 3B (if miggy stays), and LF. 1B = Jacobs, RF = Hermida, and CF need to be addressed. I'd love to see Paul LD come back, although I doubt it'll happen.

1B: Gaby Sanchez. I'm high on this guy. I think he comes up to AA soon, then to the bigs come Sept.

CF: Jason Michaels is an interesting player. Played at UM, can play all 3 OF positions. He's an ineteresting player. Makes 1.5 mill this year. So he's overpriced for a 270 avg with no HR's so far.

RF: hopefully Hermida can turn it on and really get going when he gets back to 100%. If not, we might want to look somewhere for help.

A note of interest is Randy Johnson, will the Unit retire, resign in NY or move on? If Wells and Schilling are out in Boston after next year, and Wakes is getting up there in age too, will he move over to Boston? Instant cred again for their rotation with Johnson-Beckett as a 1-2. Beckett's a FA but after this yr in Boston, I think he'll stay put. Instant chance for a title and they'll always keep bullpen help and O around. I'd love a Haffner or Helton to come to the marlins but it'll never happen. If Haffner's smart he signs with the Yanks.

I wouldnt mind keeping this team intact trading away a pitching prospect for an outfielder like Pie or Miledge. Def lock down willis and cabrera to long term deals. I dont realy see any free agents who will help us.

those players are fairly old. They do not fit our scheme. The best thing to do is trade a pitching prospect for an outfielder. The D-Rays will drop there price because they just have to many players and not enough positions which cannot be said for their pitching.

I like Mackowiak because he could be a solid bat in our lineup until prospects are ready or we have the stadium/expected revenue to sign a player who is a more permanent solution. At that point, Mackowiak is one of the best bench players around.

Hermida has hardly been in the lineup this year. Sure, he didn't really do anything when he was in there but the team is certainly not biting its nails on him at the moment and he's certainly not a guy on the bubble. Jacobs might be another issue altogether, but i would argue that our top position prospect in the minors is Stokes and he should get a shot this year if Jacobs keeps stinking.

I'm having the same feelings here--I both wish he could come back, but I doubt he will. He'll probably stay with the Mutts.

lol... Lo Duca back in teal.... :vomit

Yeah, I'd rather just groom Willingham or someone else. I liked Paulie, but it didn't make me cry when he was traded. :confused

okay, we've seen some good things from the ballplayers that we have this year but we need to improve. many of these players are minor leaguers and aren't ready to play in the show, some vets aren't good enough to play on a decent team. so of all the players we have now, the players i think should stay on our roster next year are: mitre, treanor, willingham, willis, cabrera, jacobs (but might need to spend some time in minors). this would be a reasonable team for me.

1B Jacobs

2B M. Giles

SS Neifi or C. Guillen

3B Cabs

LF Willy

CF B. Clark/ L. Matos

RF Kearns

C Barrett/ T. Hall

SP Willis

SP L. Hernandez

SP M. Clement

SP B. Arroyo

SP D. Davis

if we get this damn stadium deal done, loria said he'd bring the payroll back up -i think immediately or the next season. the players i mentioned we've either shown interest in in the past or i think may be possible for us to aquire

PLAYERS I WANT ARE IN BOLD!

lol... Lo Duca back in teal.... :vomit

LoDuca was the only catcher Ive ever seen who somehow managed to get injured (or appeared to be injured ) after almost every pitch.

the players i think should stay on our roster next year are: mitre, treanor, willingham, willis, cabrera, jacobs (but might need to spend some time in minors). this would be a reasonable team for me.

SS Neifi or C. Guillen

the fact you dont think Hanley is ready makes me think you are being silly

how about Olivo and Hermida?

Mitre will hopefully be gone, Moehler, Herges, Borowski, Borchard and Olivo too. Willis and Cabrera hopefully stay. Jacobs I am not overly sure about. Hopefully he picks it up.

Hanley and Hermida of course, Johnson, Nolasco, Uggla, Willingham, Olsen, Vargas, Aguila can all stay.

Mitre will hopefully be gone, Olivo too. Willingham, Willis, Cabrera hopefully stay. Jacobs I am not overly sure about. Hopefully he picks it up.

You just love riling up everyone on this site, dont you?
