Joe Borowski ? Marlins Closer

Featured Replies

I know it is early in the season, but after tonights win against the Pirates, Joe Borowski has converted all of the save opportunities (five) given to him so far this season. Do you think we have another Todd Jones on our hands with JoBo?

maybe maybe not it is still early. and even if it is then it is sheer luck because this is a brand new staff top to bottom when it comes to pitching and coaching in general with this team.

we've had luck with reviving guys but also the luck of getting ex-closers who still stunk it works both ways and evens out over time.

He threw the ball well tonight and hit his spots. What more could you ask?

It appeared Girardi has taken over calling the game in late innings.

After Bautista hit that two runs homerun I don't think I saw Olsen shake off Treanor again.

You may be right PB that Girardi started calling the game from dugout as the game went on.

I don't think he was ever really that dominant to begin with.

Exactly. He only had one quality year as a closer.

I don't think he was ever really that dominant to begin with.

Just about as dominant as Todd Jones ever was before his career was revived last season. In 2003 with the Cubs, JoBo had 33 saves (37 save opportunities) with a 2.68 ERA with 66 K and 18 BB in 68.1 IP. That is pretty strong. Maybe not the most dominant, but dominant none the less. There were five closers ahead of him in the NL in saves and he was tied with Troy Percival for 10th leaguewide in saves.

I never really said Jones was dominant either.

I know that, but I if you notice in the first message I ask if we have another Todd Jones on our hands. You are responding to the thread title, not the message.

I think Borowski will have a tremondous season as the closer for the Marlins. He has motivation since his contract is up after the year. He will think about the money and in order to recieve a good pay day (Kyle Farnsworth, Armando Benitez) he will try to keep his numbers as well as he can. This will be a good season for him.

The difference this year is that if Borowski has a really good first half, chances are we'll trade him after the all star break, or at the deadline. We probably wouldnt be in the market to retain his services in the offseason if his numbers are good enough, so moving him for some more prospects would make sense. It'd be nice to rip off another team for an average reliever instead of the other way around for once:)

I think that Jobo isn't gonna get the oppurtunity to put up the kind of numbers or create the kind of buzz that Benitez and Jones did because we won't be winning enough games, or at least getting him save oppurtunities.

And you forget Todd Jones ? He signed for a boatload of money in Detroit for this year after last season with us

Borowski had a decent year last year.

I think the South Florida heat helps closers. They only need 1 IP to come in when the other hitters are worn down during the game.

We have a history of finding closers easy.

Randy Messenger has looked sharp so far and is taking advantage of an opportunity that Chris Resop didn't so far.

Nice strong outing from JoBo today, striking out two and inducing a groundout to complete the sweep of the Blue Jays. He has now converted 11 of the 12 save opportunities given to him. Not bad at all. At least 30 saves from JoBo seems like a real possibility.

I figured that he would become solid trade bait around midseason. He doesnt have the track record for us to keep him around and pay him long term. But some contending team is going to want him if we arent contending. And don't we expect Tank to eventually take over as closer?

Chris Resop was sent to AAA in place of Olsen....Messenger was on his way up when Resop was on his way down......only reason Resop was sent down was to make room for a 5th starter....and none other....give him time...he will be back

Yeah, i'm thinkin JoBo is trade bait but he's done tremendous while here.

Resop's story in the bigs is probably far from over, but it is becoming more and more difficult for him to get back here with all the success we've been having from everybody, even Herges and Borowski. Either way, you can't write off a releiver from a few brief call-ups that didn't go well. Look at Logan Kensing, this guy was written off by a lot of people and he has been nothing short of amazing once he got settled this year. Except for a few early outings he has been near lights-outs.

Resop has only pitching for 2+ years right now and has done remarkably well considering he knew little about pro pitching....give him the rest of this year to figure how to pitch rather than just throwing heat and you will see him on someone's big league club next year and possible a late call up this year
