2nite they basically ignored the Phillies until the score was final - I think they only mentioned it once or twice.

Saturday 8/13, they dusted off the old song and played it at JRS with a new video (as the Marlins finished whipping up on the Braves).

 

The "girl in the blue bikini" was replaced by more wholesome shots - boy I miss her.......

Also Speaking of back then when Joe Angel was here, John Boles the old Manager of the Marlins was at turnerfield! lol, i remeber he used to do a funny look with his eyes and sit the whole time on the bench. He never got up and kept staring with those eyes!

I learned from Angel that a one-hopper over the wall is NOT a "ground rule double". It's technically called an "automatic double" because it doesn't involve a park specific ground rule. Interesting - and no other commentator says this, just Joe.

 

I saw him on the field before an SF game @ JRS last year - told him we missed him. He turned and acknowledged my sentiments.

 

I still kind hate that OB basically drove Joe outta town, and then turned tail himself one year later. Those guys were great together early on, but clashed later big-time - a real shame..............

If only they could simulcast Len and Tommy on the radio, then we would have something going. lol

 

Don't know where it comes from but your TV bias is evident again just as my radio bias is. My bias stems from I began a baseball fan before TV was available. Where does your bias come from? Simultaneous broadcasting is ridiculous. Two very different mediums. For instance, next game watching TV count how many pitches are thrown and not even reported (too often because of nonsense discussion). There is an assumption that you can see it so they don't have to tell you.

Len and Tommy are good. Much better than other teams have. But, radio has a different function (more sportscasters than entertainers.) And as one who grew up with Red Barber, Mel Allen, Curt Gowdy... I have no problem with Art and Boog on radio. They're not great, but they paint the picture verbally... in the baseball tradition.

i prefer listening to the voice of the Gator Mick Hubert over Vern Lundquist or whoever on CBS.

Purely ruminating, one has to wonder considering Loria's penchant with reconnecting with the early Marlins fan base, if in fact Boog departs, as he wants so desperately to do, perhaps there will be a slot available to bring back Joe Angel. From a PR standpoint it would be a terrific move.

 

As for Van Horn, I #^% hate him, let me rephrase that I don't like his "work" at all, I'm sure he's a very nice guy but as someone who grew up with Curt Gowdy (back in the day of stone tablets and cave-dwelling) on the radio (under my pillow hehehe), Van Horn just doesn't "paint" a good enough picture of the game for me, I would not be disappointed if there was a completely new radio team next year.

The Marlins may have to go into the deepest depths of baseball radio.

 

The Las Vegas 51's announcer Russ Langer was close to getting the job DVH has now, but was beat out by DVH. He was beat out by the incumbent Boog (Boog was pre/postgame show host) won the job so he stuck with the 51's in Las Vegas.

 

He wants a team he can grow old with. He has filled in with the big club on several occasions when Vin Scully has had to get time off, seems like Rick Monday and Ross Poreter can't cover by themselves.

Cause WJNA has a better presentation and attitude towards the team than any affiliate on the Marlins Radio Network. They act like they are honored to be the Marlins' home in South Florida. (Yes, WJNA id's itself as Royal Palm Beach-Ft. Lauderdale-Miami during Marlins games)

I voted they are horrible. They can be good color an everything, but anyone who spends more than half the time talking about the other team on whatever ocassion should work for the other team.

That is not exactly based on fact. OB's contract called for him to eventually become the lead announcer, and it was something the organization was looking for. OB was offered a deal by ESPN and tried getting out of his contract prior to Joe not being renewed. The Marlins said no. If they had let him leave, Joe would probably still be there. The organization and FSN changed their decision one year later, allowing Dave to go to ESPN. Joe was already long gone by that point. Why did the organization and FSN say no prior to Joe's leaving, but reverse their decision a year later? There is the question.

 

BTW Len and Tommy? Seem to work well together. There was never a doubt about Tommy, but I have been pleasantly surprised with Len's call of the game.

Len jinxed another today. Great job buddy.

 

Seriously, no one else finds it annoying that they only talk about the other team most of the time? I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT JOHN SMOLTZ NOT PLAYING GOLF IN A MONTH! s***. I'm a Marlins fan, I don't give three shits if John Smoltz is going to the PGA Tour when he retires.

Every Marlin announcer I can remember has done that. Nothing new there.

i liked dave o brien n hutton. hutton is ok. hes cool because hes a real marlins fan and been ther e a while but him and casper dont tell us too much stuff that players wouldnt like us to kno. they just are like cheerleaders more than anouncers

Good points, CGator. I think Joe may have made some tactical mistakes (in his last year 2000) by criticizing John Henry for his stadium proposal (25,000 seat mini-park, expandable when necessary). That frosted his relationship with FO and (I believe) led to his departure.

 

Anyway, Joe landed on his feet in SF and appears to be enjoying himself. God bless him.
