May 25, 200620 yr with hermida back that allows willy to get behing the plate....even though i love olivo's arm and speed for a catcher and a descent bat and treanor's all out effort...neither of these guys are our future starting backstops...what willingham caught like once the whole year...is he alright or is he a mike piazza ( great hitter then an arm that runners can go from 1st to 3rd on in a steal...however i would prefer that for the future we keep willy in the outfield(fresher legs) and a better catcher than olivo with treanor as the backup. any thoughts?
May 25, 200620 yr I don't think its over yet. But he's not being a defensive liability in left field so I'd say its getting closer to life support.
May 25, 200620 yr I think if our offense was horrible, it may be more of an issue. It is unfortunate that he was not given more of an opportunity. But, truth be told, Olivo is probably a better offensive option that anybody who would replace Willy. So, at least we've given Olivo an opportunity to show he can be an everyday, major league catcher.
May 25, 200620 yr I think they liked his bat so much that they decided he was better off playing more than 140 games and he also has had some knee problems so he's better off in the of.

Borchard is a bench player. He's a career .194 hitter with no strike zone judgement and bad defense. He has decent power, thus making him a bench player.

Despite his consistently low average, the hits he does get are usually big ones. I'm not saying to trot him out 162 times a year, but it's not as if Olivo's bat is an impact one either and his defense has left a little to be desired imo. I just think it would be beneficial to the club to at least give Willy some games behind the palte every now and then.
May 26, 200620 yr Pretty much he is the emergency catcher still Matt LeCroy is our emergency catcher.
May 26, 200620 yr As far as I'm concerned, it's irrelevant. If Admin would allow me, I'd say in 2008 Willy is not even on the team anymore. 50/50 wager. Or I'd take Uggla or Ramirez head to head against Willy as to who survives MLB on the Markins the longest. And if Admin would allow me I'm still willing to wager against those that thought the over/under of 65 was too low. I'll still take risk and take the under. But these thoughts are for informational purposes only.
May 26, 200620 yr If the Marlins had more than 1 good OF in the organization besides Willy, he'd be catching.

He seems to have more consistent at-bats, has shown solid defense/great arm, and has gotten a few big hits. To me, everyone likes Abercrombie because he no longer strikes out on three consecutive pitches. It now takes 4 or 5 pitches for him to look foolish at the plate. I have no idea about his defensive ability, other than to sat that he has made some horrendous and spectacular defensive plays (mostly throws). I don't see any reason to hand Abercrombie the job without allowing Borchard a chance to compete. If you project Borchard over the same amount of at-bats as Abercrombie assuming NO improvement by Borchard, Borchard would have twice as many HRs, more than twice as many RBIs, almost twice as many walks, less than half as many strikeouts, and a greater on base percentage. Small sample size aside, these numbers suggest that Reggie isn't that much better. Why should Abercrombie be handed anything? The only statistic that screams out that Borchard might not project into anything great, while Abercrombie's power numbers might improve, is that Borchard does not have a single double, while 11 out of Reggie's 30 hits went for extra bases. But, IMO that statistic is a bit meaningless, because it is quite clear that Borchard has natural power ability, and projects to have DOUBLE the HRs over the same amount of at-bats as Reggie.
May 26, 200620 yr I think it all depends upon willis honestly guys. If we end up moving him for some top prospects I think willingham could go back to catcher. Young + Quentin + Nippert would give us then a CF + LF for the future right there.
May 26, 200620 yr Hammer doesn't look comfortable at all behind the plate. I am guessing his time behind the plate is over. Unless there is an emergency.

Man the things I will do if we can get Young, Quentin, Montero for Willis and lets say Gaby Hernandez (Unfortunately I don't think the Dbacks are that crazy )

Borchard's D is pretty mediocre. He has a habit of taking the wrong angles to a balls and has trouble picking them up. I think Borchard should get some solid PT, but I'd rather have Reggie playing CF most of the time, just not all.

May 26, 200620 yr Hammer doesn't look comfortable at all behind the plate. I am guessing his time behind the plate is over. Unless there is an emergency. He didn't look comfortable right after he made the move to catcher, but he looked great this spring. I wish he had been getting some starts behind the plate all year long.

I think Borchard should get some solid PT, but I'd rather have Reggie playing CF most of the time, just not all. Is this really based on anything? I'm not questioning you, but I haven't seen him take any "wrong angles." I've seen him gun down a few runners, and I haven't seen him misplay any balls. However, I'll admit that I haven't attempted to analyze whether his routes were perfectly run. That being said, I've seen Abercrombie bobble plenty of balls, and I've seen him airmail a few throws, and I've seen him needlessly attempt to throw a runner out with NO shot of making the play, and allowing a runner to advance from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd. Can't we describe Abercrombie's defense as "pretty mediocre" too?

Reggie for the most part has been a lot more steady in CF, and he has big play ability with his arm and his range.
