Hmm...I'm a fan of Phillippe and liked his last role (Crash).

Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the role of the Penguin.

The Penguin is a horrible villain. I would prefer someone else to be him besides Hoffman, who shouldn't have to stoop down for this role after winning the Best Actor Oscar.

Are you basing this on the Danny Devito portrayal? Because that really wasn't the Penguin at all.

 

The Penguin isn't a mutant psycho who runs around with toy penguins that have bombs strapped to their backs.

 

He's supposed to be a weird, short, long nosed wannabe aristocrat who uses his wealth/means for criminal activity.

 

I've said it a million times and I'll say it again, Burton's Batman films really weren't Batman at all.

Penguin's a gangster. Yes, he happens to use the occasional umbrella as a weapon (a gun in most occasions). Bryan nailed the current interpretation of the character. I think Hoffman's perfect.

 

And that title sucks, expect it to be changed.

Kind of offtopic, but is there a definitive Penguin origin? Just started reading the Batman graphic novels I bought a couple months back yesterday. About 2/3 way through Batman:Year One. Is he in Haunted Knight/TLH/Dark Victory?

 

Would be interested in reading it because if there is a definitive origin Nolan will probably play heavily off of it in the sequel.

 

And I disagree, I love that title. It's much better than Batman 2 or Batman Continues. The Dark Knight was the name that the fans wanted, and Nolan generally gives the fans what they ask for. Someone needs to rename this thread to 'The Dark Knight', btw.

There is no definitive Penguin origin. At least, not to my knowledge in the current Year One continuity. He shows up about midway through Dark Victory and, I think, it absent from Long Halloween (although, I may be mistaken, he might be in the last issue). Anyways, DEFINITELY read The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. If you liked the tv show, you'll love the graphic novels.

 

That being said, the current Batman is going into entirely new directions; Batman has taken a year off to rededicate himself to his quest after the last Crisis and he returns to a very similar and yet very different Gotham. Commissioner Gordon has been infected with Joker's laughing gas and Bruce Wayne has, potentially, two children running around. One, with Catwoman who is still a baby and being brought up by Selina Kyle (who is retired as Catwoman). The second child is at least 6-10 years old and the son of Bruce and Talia Head (daughter of Ra's Al Ghul). The current storyline arc is being written by Grant Morrison, a really trippy, philosophical and esoteric writer (I can't even do a description of his work justice) and he's having Talia and Bruce Wayne's young son return to his life (the storyline is called "Batman and Son"). This storyline will take both Bruce Wayne and Batman in some very new directions and territory the character hasn't gone. While Morrison does Batman Paul Dini (of Batman: the Animated Series fame) will be writing Detective Comics and there's big expectations for it as well.

 

That being said, I have faith this movie will be great and well-done, etc., etc. But, for now, I take solace that his next release, "The Prestige" comes out in another month or so.

Whatever trepidation there was on Heath Ledger's part to assume the role of The Joker has apparently subsided as we've just received word from the studio that the sequel to the utterly kick ass BATMAN BEGINS will be titled THE DARK KNIGHT and will have Heath Ledger taking on the iconic role of the The Joker. Christopher Nolan is back directing and presumably a few faces from the original will be back, including Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox (although we only have confirmation of Heath Ledger as The Joker). It also goes without saying that Christian Bale is back as Batman. After the endless stream of names that have been bandied around for the role of Joker, we can finally put that rumor to rest. What do you guys think of the casting? Or the sequel name? Some of you were probably rooting for BATMAN CONTINUES but THE DARK KNIGHT does have a certain ominous charm. Leave a little strike back below, why dontcha? THE DARK KNIGHT is back, baby! Production is set to begin in early 2007.

It should just be the Dark Knight, but knowing Warner Bros. they'll go all, "BUT THEY WON'T KNOW IT'S BATMAN!" Like it won't be obvious from the trailers, etc.

According to the press release it is just The Dark Knight, not Batman: The Dark Knight.

Since I'm bored I've decided to post my Harvey Dent favorites:

 

1. Joaquin Phoenix

2. Liev Schreiber

3. Denzel Washington (A bit out there, but I think he could do it. Never seen him do a role quite like this, it'd be interesting to see if he has the range.)

If Denzel were to be in this movie it would automatically jump to "best movie ever" status.

Denzel would be such a badass Harvey Dent, you have no idea.

 

 

I always got the impression Harvey Dent was a person of indeterminate color from the Batman: TAS. It could've just been the way he was drawn though.

He's always been white in the comics and in the original Tim Burton film Harvey Dent was played by Billy Dee Williams.

 

Hmmmm... My pics for Two Face are as follows:

1. Russel Crowe

2. Johnny Depp (is there anything he can't do)

3. Edward Norton

4. Brad Pitt

 

I put Pitt on there because I think he's capable and it'd be something we're not used to seeing from him and, in the comics, Harvey Dent is called "Apollo" by the newspapers because of his good looks.

Edward Norton would be such an incredible Harvey Dent/Two-Face. That's what I want.

While Ed Norton is perhaps my favorite actor, I don't see him in the role at all. I can see him in the Harvey Dent DA mode, but not as Two Face.

 

And further confirming my dorkism, here's a cool manip of Ledger as the Joker:

Depp won't do it because he's not really looking to do mainstream stuff. Plus, Id rather have him play Wallace in Sin City 2 if he wants to do a comic movie.

 

I think Schrieber has a great look for the part.

I think Robert Downey Jr. would be a good choice.
