Just a thought because of the Crawford conjecture

There's a couple of things that separate Carl Crawford from Rocco Baldelli but one of them isn't talent.

Take a look at Baldelli's contract (and it's a good example of why a person who represents himself has a fool for a client) and you'll notice his 2007-2008 pay is based on 600 at bats in 2006, which he'll never reach. Acquiring Baldelli, who has some injury issues, could conceivably be an even better deal for the Fish financially (who would be in the driver's seat to renegotiate a new deal with him a better deal for BOTH parties). Plus he's a legitimate CFer.

Rocco Baldelli of

3 years/$9M (2006-08), plus club options (2009-11)

  • agreed to extension 11/05 (avoided arbitration)
  • 06:$2M, 07:$0.75M, 08:$2.25M, 09:$6M club option ($4M buyout), 10:$8M club option, 11:$9M club option ($2M buyout - 2010 & 2011 options must be exercised together)
  • $4M escalator if Baldelli has 600 Plate Appearances in 2006$1.75M in 2007, increasing 07 salary to $2.5M
  • $2.25M in 2008, increasing 08 salary to $4M

[*]performance bonuses for 2007 & 2008 if Baldelli fails to reach 600 PAs in 2006

[*]may earn as much as $32M from 2006 to 2011

[*]1 year/$0.369M (2005)

[*]1 year/$0.32M (2004), renewed 3/04

[*]Devil Rays took $20,000 incentive off the table when Baldelli balked at having his contract renewed

[*]1 year/$0.3 M (2003)

[*]drafted 2000 (1-6)

[*]$2.25M signing bonus (paid over 5 years for 2-sport athlete)

[*]1 year/$0.3M (2003)

[*]agent: negotiated extension himself (hired IMG's Casey Close to review contract language) (formerly represented by Scott Boras)

[*]ML service: 3.000

Not saying this is something we would want to do, should do, or any of that. Just throwing it out there.

If the D-Rays would only move B.J. Upton to centerfield, then Baldelli would become expendable.

Pigs will fly before B.J. can play even acceptably at shortstop.

Pigs will fly before the Devil Rays actually begin to make moves that start to benefit their organization. Although they didn't fare too bad in the trade they pulled recently.

I think they could of got more for Hendrickson closer to the deadline, even if he isn't exactly great, but who knows.

They pulled the trigger while they could get a guy (Navarro) whose current value is low but whose potential is fairly high. Hendrickson is nothing more than an average starter and for a team like the D-Rays, getting a player who could be above average in the future wasn't a bad move.

Not disagreeing, just saying...there were a few teams interested in Hendrickson, say they waited to the deadline and packaged him with Huff, they could of maybe got a nicer package.
